  1. Great post Skatezilla, you have just written my whole gaming biography, I remember all of those events going way back to the last century. DCS: not only do you get to fly planes and blow stuff up, it's also very educational.
  2. This is a fascinating topic. When Nvidia releases the next graphics card, will the 'evil miners' flood the market with used 1080ti cards? Does it work that way, and would a second hand card be a bad buy due to being worn out by the aforementioned evil miners? (I'm not really accusing miners of being evil, just joking)
  3. Thanks for the encouragement guys, I had a vague idea to use it to do the start up sequence for the F-18 among other things. It's only a few steps so I thought it might work as a series of button presses. Other than that I'll figure out something to assign it to.
  4. Inspired by all the really talented people in this thread, I have started to tinker around by making my first button box. It's based on a cheapo joystick circuit board from eBay, a few switches and a bit of MDF, with some help from a guy at work who did the laser cutting from my design. It's all just bare bones testing stage at the moment, and all the labels are just random text that means nothing, but I just wanted to join the fun and also say thank you for the inspiration. The idea is that the final box will be black with white text, but I wanted to make sure everything fits in the space it's designed for first.
  5. Nice one thanks, I'll check it out.
  6. Thanks, I'll give it a try, for someone like me who doesn't know his Carl Vinsons from his Oliver Perrys, an idiot's picture guide would be useful. I'll have to try and make one, thanks for the tip
  7. Is anyone aware of a visual version of the assets list, i.e. pictures of all the stuff in the pack in one place? I've been seacrching both in this forum and elsewhere for this but having no luck.
  8. It depends, you do get some really good bargains on Steam from time to time, and often at different times than the ED shop, you just have to look keep a look out for the Steam sales. I've certainly had some DCS goodies from Steam in the past.
  9. Wow, are all the towns so much smaller or is that a one off? That's quite a difference.
  10. So just to confirm, even though steam is now the same version as the standalone, there isn't/won't be compatibility between modules bought on one platform or the other? Presumably due to the different methods used for DRM. Just wondering as I'm trying to tidy up all the different versions of DCS I have and delete unnecessary files. I'm pretty sure all the modules I bought on steam are now activated in my standalone version, so is there no purpose to have DCS on steam?
  11. One of the things I love most about my Warthog joystick is the feel of cold metal as you touch it. I think those physical sensations are even more important in VR, and probably more noticeable too.
  12. Other games call it world scale and such, which I think is a bit less confusing. In DCS VR settings, I think it refers to the IPD of the imaginary eyes/pupils that you are looking through in the virtual world. They need to be the same as your own real eyes, hence why some observed that the cockpits were too small, some observed the same cockpits were too large. I guess because the rift has a little knob to physically adjust the image in the headset to match your own IPD, the two get confused.
  13. I got mine right at the beginning so I paid close to double the current price and I'd say I've had excellent value for money. I don't think the rift causes any more nausea than real flying personally, and games like DCS go into a whole new level in VR. Basically anything that involves flying or driving is amazing.
  14. Yes, me too, I got the full $26 discount on the A-10C at $40, so personally very pleased. Thing is I never would have bought the A-10 at full price anyway, so ED haven't lost out. I'm happy as I got what I consider to be a bargain, they got $14 more than they otherwise would have, so this is a case of the bonus system working as it should, rewarding people to buy modules and still ED makes a few quid they otherwise wouldn't have. I agree you do have to be patient though and pick your time to pull the trigger.
  15. Now you're talking
  16. I think one of the most significant features will be world scale/camera IPD movement. Should mean you can set the cockpit size correctly regardless of how wide your head is.
  17. I've just added a bass shaker speaker under my chair, which has been a great improvement to immersion, so the cool fan blowing might be the next thing. I first remember thinking about one back in the Grand Prix Legends days, but I've never actually got round to it. The oily rag and a bit of old webbing to give the smell sounds bizarre but I agree is worth considering. It's about fitting all the pieces of the jigsaw together. I wonder how to bottle the smell of hot metal?
  18. Lovely work there mate, I shall definitely download this. Thank you for your time on this, it will be a welcome addition to the toybox.
  19. I just contacted technical support on the e-shop, and this was the reply: "exactly at now there is a problem with using 70% of bonus points will be fixed asap on DCS E-shop, maybe some days later" So, on topic for the thread, it seems that a) the bonus system is not a joke, it's just a temporary glitch, and b) to some of our friends who may have been affronted by the question I asked, the 30% limit quoted in the terms and conditions does not apply in this case, there indeed should be a 70% allowance as stated in the weekend news. Anyway, thanks to Andrey in technical support for the help.
  20. Sorry, I've probably hijacked the thread here, and as I'm not keen on the tone of the title and the responses it's bound to get I'll start a fresh one.
  21. Very cool thanks for sharing those
  22. From ED yesterday: "DCS World 70% Off Bonus Event From now until the end of the DCS World 2.5 Open Beta period, use your bonus points to save up to 70% off the modules that will be subject to the price change noted above. In the store checkout page, select the option to use your bonus points." That's where my confusion comes from.
  23. Just a quick question on the bonus points scheme: I have $26 in bonus points, and wanted to use them in the 70% sale currently on to go towards the A-10C, currently $39.99. 70% of 39.99 is just short of $28, but the store will only let me use $12 of my points. Any ideas?
  24. It's probably our fault, we built up your expectations too high with our giddy enthusiasm. I'm not sure how old you are, but I think those of us who have been messing about with all this flying/driving sim business since the last century find it a bit easier to accept the fuzzy graphics, because it's not that long since high end PCs couldn't do any better. My suggestion is the same as dburne's: stick with it, and maybe also try out lots of other sims/games/experiences before you make the judgment. Two minutes isn't enough to grasp all of what we have in VR, so try to give it time.
  25. Hi thanks for the link, I saw that when I was searching, but that is from 2016 - I haven't tried that exact method because I think it has been superseded in Oculus Home. There is now a mirror audio button to select but that doesn't seem to do anything for DCS. That older method might be worth a try though, and I have another lead I got from the Aerofly FS2 forum. I'll post back any findings. To be honest, the quick method of unscrewing the rift headphones and using my normal ones is currently the quickest solution, but a bit of a faff. Thanks again for the assistance Boris
