Alt+Enter does not enter full screen; stuck in windowed
Boosterdog replied to Nealius's topic in 2D Video Bugs
Thank you -
You picked one report - its a fair point you make- however Ive run a clean install for long time- most of my reports were with a clean install, most include all the files asked for and more. Some are tagged, others ignored. And no I dont mean most of mine. If I did I would say "most of mine" although again its probably a fair point that I am most interestedin what bugs me. Arent we all? Thanks for your time.

As Ive gotten more into the art of killing of things using overwhelming firepower performance does certainly become "a thing". Not enough for me to shelve it (non VR) but certainly enough to be careful about what is switched on in which cockit at any one time . Id imagine the oft recommend try with a friend would be problematic at present. Thankfully I think the modulle has a long shelf life. Perhaps even long enough for MC and Vulkan to finally appear.

Thanks for the reply @NineLine. My experience is somewhat different that what you state. Ive made threads on a number of things, provided evidence and more. For nothing. Not even a "working as intended". I did once get a vague "its on my list" from Flappie but that was a year ago and nothing more although I havnet checked recently as I lost faith.. Perhaps this falls into your "we believe its right and nothing is shown that it is not, what are we to do?" category. What do you do? Say so. Say "thanks but, at this time, there is nothing we can do". Id accept that. What Im left feeling is "go away and stop bothing us". Recently myself and many others have repeatedly told ED that their solution for Alt-Enter only partially worked in 2.7 and no longer works at all in 2.8 yet the thread is still marked "solved". There is little point opening a new thread when the problem is the same for everyone. The problem being ED took away Alt-Enter staing issue resolved and in doing so removed a feature many players relied upon for various reasons without giving any resaon why so we might understand. WE've asked for a resonspe, were copied in ED. Nothing. The "so what" is that it took me a leap of faith to buy another module. Something that should have been a no brainer. The other "so what" is that if you want feedback, if you want people to go to the effort of providing the information you ask for, leaving them dangling, isnt a great way of encouraging future participation. I appreciate you are a small team. I know noone gets it right all the time. I just wanted to expand one my reasons for saying what I did so you ay better understand. Again - I reiterate, I totally agree with the OP for the most part.

Something that has been pointed out to ED and BIGNEWY several times in this thread with no reaction and no removal of non working solution posted. Frustrating. -
A point or two on bug reporting. Firstly, most reports never even get an official rresponse despite the rules being followed and the information requested supplied. Secondly ED via its mods have a long track recond in posting "working as intended" when it either isnt or shouldnt then leaving threads to wither on the vine. Thirdly sometime a fix is suggested, ithe thread is highlighted as "solved" but the fix doesnt work for all. Again leaving the thread to wither on the vine. So its not all one way, ED are not blameless but I do agree with most of the OPs points.

investigating Framerate decreasing up to 16% with 2.8.0
Boosterdog replied to Limaro's topic in Game Performance Bugs
Mainly for mud pushers. If you are prepared to fiddle a little and use the high shadow setting routinely you can pull about 8-10 fps back in some scenarios (maybe a few more) by reducing the shadow map size from 4096 to 3072 in the shadows.lua This keeps the up close shadows from flickering too much and doesn’t have such a defined cut off at altitude. channel and perhaps Mariana’s can recover about 12 fps on my rig by reducing the scenery detail to 0.75 with no noticeable effect on graphics. Doesn’t work for other maps.- 31 replies

Alt+Enter does not enter full screen; stuck in windowed
Boosterdog replied to Nealius's topic in 2D Video Bugs
Having played around with things for a few hours I can perhaps help some, in certain situations. THIS ISNT AN ALT-TAB FIX - just a way of coping better with its absence in 2D. I play mainly helos in 2D and I fly low most of the time. So these suggestions are limited. Most if not all of this is obvious. My working assumption is that the old Alt-Tab Exclusive Full Screen somehow handled the game better. This is only based on my observations of how it used to improve stuff back in the day. To test I used was a redux of an old F14 track of flying low over the forests of the Caucauses looking sideways out of the pit. This is a track i used initally to set my graphical limts back in 2021 and 2.7. In this case with MSAA X2 and SSAA 1.5 (initally I had to Alt Tab to get smooth running but in later patches in 2021 I got the same without as the booting process seemed to have refined). The track would yeild two results - without EFS a perceptable stutter - with EFS smooth play. Using this track I played about with the graphics in an attempt to find a decent middleground. I was also interested in finding those settings that could be altered without a game restart as the Maps in DCS vary wildly in their demands and present options are woefully limited.. I should add that I dont think its just about power - without vsync the replay ran at around 95 fps with my settings although my observations are made with vsync on (60) for smoothness of flow. I reproduced the mission with the Hind and AH64. The stuff below is based on what I found with the Apache. What I found isnt earth shattering but it helps me. All bets are off when you introdice a lot of active AI!! 1) With MSAA X2 or X4 and SSAA off no stutter as I expected. (X2 for the Marianas) 2) MSAA X2 and SSAA X1.5 on but SSLR OFF and mirrors OFF also worked. Seems SSLR is doing it thing even when there are no visible areas of water to give reflections. Could be an inland option if you can live without with relections in rivers. (Marianas still not perfect - see point 4) 3) In the Caucauses there are shrubs under the forest canopies. These produce shadows - removing the Shrub.ref file in the Game root Mods/Terrains/Caucauses/Surface Detail (I renamed it Shrub_0) eases the load a little without producing too noticable an effect. 4) For the later ED maps (Channel and Marianas) dialing back the scenery detail to 0.75 can recover a good few fps without affecting the graphics. This in trun reduces the stutter. Seems to have a small double whammy when using in cockpit displays. 5) Pratting about sightseeing is greatly assisted by switching off the in cockpit displays (obviously) I can, at a push, live without the SSAA so have gone with option 1 and option 4 for the Channel and Marianas. I find only the AH64 needs this currently. The previous heavy hitters like F14 and Hind are fine without any adjustment. Id expect this given its pretty EA. In cockpit displays of course have huge impacts. In another thread a user has found setting the displays to every frame smoothed out his frame times - its had no noticable effect for me but something to try. Clearly something has changed as the full screen is no longer exclusive but Im also quite sure that the combination of the AH64 and 2.8 has had a net impact too that AlT-TAB alone may not have solved (but may have helped). Whilst I know others have different reasons for wanting AlT-TAB back, I am going to be interested to see how my expereince changes if future patches return some performance to both the game in general and to the AH64. Of course putting it back (or providing a reason why not other than "its working as intended") would be the best outcome here. EDIT - playing around a little with the Shadow.lua (Config/Effects) may also help - for instance medium shadows flicker badly in the trees but High was a tad too much for my rig - altering either medium or highs shadow map from 2048 or 4096 respectivley to 3072 provdies a few more fps than the standard high setting (a few less than the standard medium setting) without any noticable impact on the quility from high (i also lower the larger numbers from 7000 to 3072 but have seen no discernable effect positive or negative). -
There is a quick mission for the Hind (Disaster Releif) that is similar. Running it on a the Dserver sorts it out -( kinda - you loose the destruction zones which is kinda the point of mission). In short DCS now asks for too much of its limited core utilization for sure. Multi-core is greatly anticipated.

TRue but Im definately eating my own and anyone eles's hat on this over the reservations on prformance I had initally. Its EA and its new so its as demandings as an ex-wife but, unlike an ex wife remains enjoyable after the honeymoon period. Not as complex as I feared either........again unlike an ex-wife.

Alt+Enter does not enter full screen; stuck in windowed
Boosterdog replied to Nealius's topic in 2D Video Bugs
For some. Not for others. There is a judder to the scene when looking sidways where more movement is more apparent. The proven solution for this was always to Alt Tab out and back. At present its not exclusive full screen. If it were I wouldnt be able to see my windows system volume bar when i adjust the sound. As for why the posted solution doent work - I dunno - Im not involved in game development. I just give money to people involved with game development Perhaps ask your team? But, all that aside - please raise the matter with the Team again as not everyone has benefitted from this, as far as I can tell, unnecessary change. Thanks -
Totally - But putting it back is presumably far easier than quashing random bugs given the stated reson for taking it out was affected people randomly as well (like never for me)
-
This is and always was my experience. Looking out of the out to sides seems to be worst case. Nothing to do with the fps ED seem to have focussed on. The official responses in this thread and others and the passage of time without any meaningful action is very discouraging.
-
Certainly annoying. I spent a good deal of money (for me) building a pc powerful enough to run DCS at a decent kick. Now it does this happens. I dunno if it’s an ED thing or a windows thing ED have to work with. What’s worrying is the official proclamation that there is no issue anymore as the issue was fixed. I hope they review it.

Alt+Enter does not enter full screen; stuck in windowed
Boosterdog replied to Nealius's topic in 2D Video Bugs
@BIGNEWY This is marked as solved - it isnt. Please can you give some indication iif ED is actively lookig into this? -
Im using 1024 (not every frame). For helos I could also drop the cloud detail and view distance from Extreme to Ultra or even high for a few extra frames. Keybind "M" toggle mirrors in the General Controls section of the module. I think its the default binding.

Alt+Enter does not enter full screen; stuck in windowed
Boosterdog replied to Nealius's topic in 2D Video Bugs
What we have now is not what many of us were acheiving prior. If i increase or decease sysatem volume now I get the window popping up even in full screen mode. That shouldnt, as far as I know, happen. It certainly didnt happen before as this was one of easiest ways of checking full screen was active. I consider this something of a step backwards. Seems something has been taken away for no apparenet reason other than an incorrect assumption that something thas been fixed that hsant been. -
Alt+Enter does not enter full screen; stuck in windowed
Boosterdog replied to Nealius's topic in 2D Video Bugs
All this serves to do for me, whether enters as shown or assembled onto a single line, is freeze the game on launch nut with the option of alt entering between the desktop and a vlack screen. RTX3080FE, Win10, Nividia 522.25 drivers. Please just put back the Alt Tab function if at all possible. -
Having gone through the Training mission Ive realised that my use of SS @ 1.5 was wildly optimistic. In fact the Apache is hitting my borderline 60fps even with MSAA x2 and many other lower setting (clouds, viewing distance etc) once everything is cooking. Im not sure if some of the jitter is caused by the absence of the ole forced full screen these days as the fps counter appeared solid at the enforced 60 thoughout. Perhaps the VRAM limit of my 3080. For something that spends its days down in the weeds its perhaps a little ahread of it time in terms of what it takes to run it well. No buyers regret but its likely to be yet another hanger queen whilst I go back to my first love, the Hip. EDIT - a little more flying time - without TADS and with MSAA X2, SS 1.5, Ectreme view distance, high water etc - the runway start caucuases runs between 85 over the fields and 75 over the cities . I could increase that by 10 fps without any pain. The single simple mirror costs 15fps so that off. Given the above I am more convinved that the stuttering I encountered is down to the inabilty to alt enter into full screen (whatever we have now isnt equvalent as I can still cal up windows on top of the game).
-
Got it and found it about 10-15 fps down in general so far. I think thats pretty good given all those screens.
-
Firsty I am sure this is alreasy well answered but I couldnt find anything on searching. Im finally coming round to the idea of my life being somehow diminished by not having the Apache. My only concern is performance. The EA bugs I can happiliy live with. The Hind will play in my 2D 1080P world with a minimum of 80 fps (2X MSAA and SS @1.5) most other things on max in caucauses on the ground. Is anyone able to give me a rought and dirty comparison as to the hit over the hind? Thanks
