For those who trim by tapping the trim button
PeaceSells replied to PeaceSells's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
I just noticed that I can hear the clicks too when I fly. Why? Because it's in the game!! *major facepalm* lol Thanks for answering though!! Nice flying! I can see you are "lead trimming" as Holton said. Before I started the thread, I suspected this would be the way to do click-trimming efficiently, but I wasn't sure because it seemed kinda weird and un-intuitive to me. It's good to see that there are people that actually do this, thank for the demonstration! Before I started the thread, I was wondering if the real Ka-50 would also have this "bump" when click-trimming. I suspected that, in the real one, you'd have to actually hold the trim button to disable the autopilot's counter-actions, so you could click-trim without having to "lead-trim". Watching the video, I can see that there seems to be some bumping indeed when he clicks, but not always. So I'm still not sure. This is a great curiosity of mine. -
For those who trim by tapping the trim button
PeaceSells replied to PeaceSells's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
Yes it is! Cool flying btw, I saw that video from you (and the Huey one too) many months ago! Question: what's that knocking sound in the video? Is that you clicking the trim button? EDIT: Never mind, I just saw the answer in the Youtube comments, that's the trim button... EDIT 2: New question: it makes the sound both when you tap it AND when press and hold? Do you remember if the sound is produced when you 'press' or when you 'release', or both? Question 3: I see you have autopilot on and flight director off... are you using 'route mode' or 'normal' autopilot? Thanks for your input!! -
Yeah, in that mission the first target aligns perfectly, but the second one you have to help aligning using your rudder. That's normal for the Ka-50.

Blasphemy!!

For those who trim by tapping the trim button
PeaceSells replied to PeaceSells's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
hmm, it seems I have to practice more with this clicking method. I have no problem with relaxing the input to neutral in time when using the original (Default) trimmer option, I used this method a lot in the Huey before. Now I discovered the Center trimmer option and it eliminates this problem 100%, as it waits until you've actually returned your joystick to center before it accepts any new input from you. Yes, you're right. When I said "autopilot stabilization gets turned off" during trim button hold, I was actually trying to say "autopilot input hold gets suspended" during trim button hold. My mistake... The issue I'm specifically referring is not the relax motion back to the joystick center, it's what happens immediately before that: the "autopilot input hold" gets suspended even if you tap the trim. I expected this to happen only when you press and keep pressed the trim, but I was wrong. What trimmer mode did you choose under the "Special" tab in the "Options" screen of DCS? -
Hey, I'm learning the Ka-50 and, man, what a pleasant aircraft to fly... so smooth! I want to get proficient in controlling it in all different modes: autopilot on, fight director on autopilot off. Been reading a lot about the trim lately, as well as watching Youtube videos and experimenting with it. I now understand how the Ka-50 trim works, and the question I have is related to using the trim with autopilot ON and flight director OFF, and is independent of whether you use an FFB joystick, conventional joystick or joystick without springs and FFB (I use conventional stick with springs, btw). Here's the deal: you have autopilot ON and flight director OFF, you move your joystick to a new position, (let's say slightly FWD), stabilize it and tap the trim button. In a time span of a few milliseconds, the following sequence of events happen, as I understand (please tell me if I understand something wrong): 1) upon pressing the trim button, autopilot stabilization gets turned off; 2) without autopilot, your FWD input gets amplified, even though you're still holding the stick at the same place and even though it's during only a few milliseconds; 3) upon releasing the trim button, the new amplified input gets saved and fixed by the flight control system, and autopilot gets re-engaged holding this new amplified input; 4) aircraft pitches down noticeably instead of holding the pitch you originally intended when you pressed the trim button. Now I'm able to work around that by moving the stick while I keep the trim button depressed, and releasing the button when the aircraft is pointing where I want. But as I read the forums I see that many people trim by simply tapping the trim button. Doesn't it bump your aircraft slightly out of position when you do that? How exactly do you trim by tapping without getting this effect? Thanks for your input!

That's a lot of stuff you guys are mentioning. Just put some turbulence/wind gusts here and there and it will feel like a whole new sim.

What's with the slow stabilizer lately?

^^ But the question of this thread remains: Is the slow pitch up/down response of the Su-27 realistic? -
F-15 TWS/Soft Locking Unrealistic?
PeaceSells replied to The AMRAAMer's topic in F-15C for DCS World
DCS F-15C is a Flaming Cliffs 3 aircraft and because of that, except for the flight model, it's meant to be a "moderate realism" plane. Radar and systems are not accurate to the real life ones, you'll see many other things that don't correlate. -

PeaceSells replied to Fox One's topic in Su-27 for DCS World
Yes, it could, but after seeing the videos I highly suspect ED is simulating aerodynamic forces on the aircraft based on the position of the control surfaces. This would mean that the aircraft is maneuvering as a result of the movement of the control surfaces (stabilizers, in this case). -
Should radar lose lock/contacts when switching modes?
PeaceSells replied to PeaceSells's topic in DCS: Flaming Cliffs
Hmm yes, but we're not really asking for a more realistic radar... I don't know if this change would be hard to do (I doubt it), but the gain in fluidity in air combat would be just great, you have to admit that... -
Yes, that's what I understand too. I guess that's why the aircraft is so high fidelity, etc. but AI and operations not so much. Don't get me wrong, I do regard DCS as a high quality sim, one of the best I've seen, maybe the best, tied with very few others.

PeaceSells replied to Fox One's topic in Su-27 for DCS World
You can see in the video in flight that the stabilizers move up and down much slower in the Su-27 than in the Su-33. And coincidentally at the same time the Su-27 pitches up and down much slower than the Su-33. I wouldn't attribute that to the canards alone. -
I wouldn't say that DCS is more multiplayer oriented. While I don't have any numbers, I'm pretty sure that the number of buyers that play multiplayer is much smaller than the number of singleplayers. On top of that, DCS releases new paid campaigns regularly. Actual military using simulators are another story. The sim is there to provide accurate depiction of the aircraft itself, all the rest (JTAC operators, AWACS operators, airfield operators, etc.) they already have and don't need to be simulated by the software. I guess even human if players can join ATC or AWACS operators (is that possible in DCS?), how many are getting into DCS to do that? It has nothing to do with replicating real life human communications. It's just standard procedures (simple military procedures, airfield procedures, etc.) that should be in the game and they aren't. It doesn't even qualify as AI, but DCS doesn't have it. DCS AI is light years behind even old generation AIs, there's no way to compare it with Google and others mentioned...

Should radar lose lock/contacts when switching modes?
PeaceSells replied to PeaceSells's topic in DCS: Flaming Cliffs
Let me speculate a little: I guess that if the radar, from a pure machine point of view, is in the Auto Acquisition state, meaning it's waiting for a contact to appear in it's view, it naturally has no lock yet. But the radar obviously has a software commanding it, and I guess this software could in theory get in a mode where the pilot already commanded it into Auto Acquisition but it will not put the radar into that state before the lock is lost for some reason. So, in a general term, I speculate that it could be possible to get in an 'Auto Acquisition mode' without the radar being actually in the Auto Acquisition state yet, but it's obviously not the case in the 1981 F-15 system, as we saw from the manual, so DCS's depiction of the F-15 is actually coherent. I wonder how it's like in more modern aircraft or even modernized F-15's though. Now regarding the transition between RWS and TWS modes and the transition between NAV and BVR modes, can we have hopes that these will be changed so they don't lose radar locks/pictures? -
Should radar lose lock/contacts when switching modes?
PeaceSells replied to PeaceSells's topic in DCS: Flaming Cliffs
Yes, looks pretty definitive. BTW, is that the F-15? Though, if I got it right, it's still the pilot who drops the lock himself before selecting the Auto Aquisition, right? Not that it would make that much difference... -

@Ironhand: Man, those are some ingenious videos! Regarding the take-off, I think that, besides the damping that you pointed out, one thing that's also playing a big role in making the Su-33 take-off sooner is it's much higher lift and authority at very low speeds (carrier ops aircraft). After take-off and during the entire flight, we can also see that the Su-27 pitches up due to the infamous "airspeed trimming law" much more than the Su-33. It's nice to see these videos with the two of them perfectly synchronized side by side! -
Should radar lose lock/contacts when switching modes?
PeaceSells replied to PeaceSells's topic in DCS: Flaming Cliffs
Or if you want target to be reacquired quickly after ACM manouvers put him out of radar FOV... AACQ will automatically lock him as soon as he is in front of you again. That's precisely the point, you gain nothing from dropping the pre-existing lock... If you do want to drop it, there's already a button for it in your HOTAS, I'm not sure if the system would drop it due to switching modes alone...I might be wrong, but I suppose that if the pilot has a lock on the enemy in a combat situation, the system would do what it can to avoid losing it unless the pilot intentionally drops it. -
Hey guys, In FC3, switching radar between scan and TWS modes, between BVR and dogfight modes, between the dogfight modes themselves (vertical to boresight to HMD, etc.) and switching aircraft master modes (BVR to NAV, etc.) will cause radar to automatically drop the lock on the enemy, as well as drop all contacts. What do you guys think, would it be better or more realistic if locks and contacts were kept? Let's say you're approaching bandids and naturally switch from BVR to dogfight mode. Should radar drop the lock? Anyone knows how this works on the real aircraft? (I know FC3 isn't supposed to be highly realistic, but this is more of a philosophic question) Regards

As far as I know, if the enemy is facing towards you, it's always best to use high PRF, whether he's jamming you or not...

What's with the slow stabilizer lately?
PeaceSells replied to Fox One's topic in Su-27 for DCS World
It seems so, but it is indeed confusing. One of these days I noticed that, after pulling the stick all thee way back with the 'limiter override' (Y) on, trimmimg aft would make the stick move further back. Whether it actually effects maneuvering I don't know. (stick was trim reset to center before doing that) -
Hi, I've just played my first night mission (mission "Sweep" from the campaign "Sea Dragon", in which you have to intercept the F-16's) and noticed that the carrier didn't have any lights on when I came for landing, even after I requested "inbound" and later "request landing". I guess the time was about 19:00... not pitch black dark, but dark enough. Any one else did night landings on the russian carrier? Was there any illumination?

Those are not critical, you can leave the distance at 10 (default) and only move the antenna a little bit to -1 or +1, whenever you're searching for targets, this will cover a lot of altitudes. I have these commands on the keyboard, not the HOTAS, because I don't have too much buttons on my HOTAS.

What I'm understanding from the graphics is that the Su-27 has the better instantaneous turn rate, but the F-15 has slightly better max sustained turn rate? I thought that the Su-27 had the better max sustained turn rate.... Also the F-15's sustained turn rate maxes at a lower speed than the Su-27's, which means smaller turn radius... (which is probably an advantage) But, ignoring max sustained turn rates, the Su-27 has better sustained turn rates at slower speeds... (which is probably also an advantage) That's what I'm understanding... -
can't confirm this hud footage origination but nice one
PeaceSells replied to Atooyi's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
Yes it would be weird. I seems I'm wrong, in the youtube video you can hear the pilot saying "MiG-29!". I could swear it was an Su-27. I think that Su-27's have participated in training with F-15's before, not sure about Su-27's with F-14's though...
