How to change FOV / zoom in STEREO monitor mode?
PeaceSells replied to PeaceSells's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Ok, just figured it: In this file: \DCS World\Config\MonitorSetup\Stereo.lua You will find the "projection_bounds" (left, right, top and bottom) values for each viewport (each eye). I just decreased each of these values to about half and it made the FOV in stereo mode significantly smaller (and the cockpit and the world significantly bigger). Problem solved, now I just have to adjust the numbers till I find the sweet spot. The original numbers were, for the left viewport: left = 0.964925826, right = 0.715263844, top = 0.889498115, bottom = 1.11092532, These values seem to be the tangents of the angles for the actual edges of the left eye's FOV. If that's true, arctangent will give the actual angles: left = 44.0º, right = 35.6º, top = 41.7º, bottom = 48.0º, Which means that the left viewport has a horizontal FOV of 79.6º and a vertical FOV of 89.7º. If you, like me, reduce the original numbers to half: left = 0.48, right = 0.35, top = 0.44, bottom = 0.55, You'll end up with: left = 25.6º, right = 19.3º top = 23.7º bottom = 28.8º Which means your new horizontal FOV is 44.9º and new vertical FOV is 52.5º. The new FOV angles aren't half the original angles, because you're working with the tangents of the angles, not with the angles themselves. -
Hey guys, I was recently given one of those headsets that let you use your cell phone as VR device. I've then tried it with DCS in stereo monitor mode, but FOV is way too wide, making things very small (it looks like I'm sitting inside an origami cockpit). How do I change the FOV or zoom, when in stereo mode? All the commands for zoom don't seem work in this mode, not even the "toggle VR zoom"... Thanks!

@hannibal: That is a cool looking door gun you're building, sir! Now about the control within DCS being limited to just mouse or head tracking, I think I understand why Belsimtek/ED did it this way initially... If you think about it, how would someone control the gun with an actual joystick, the gun moves in pitch and yaw while a joystick moves in pitch and roll... this would be way clumsier and more unrealistic than mouse or head tracking, IMO... But now that we have cockpit builders building door guns based on joysticks (or on their potentiometers), having an option to bind door gun movement to joystick axes would make a lot of sense. I do hope Belsimtek / ED includes this, as I suppose it would be very simple to include...

Do you really think it's worth putting effort or money into anything 3DOF nowadays? Specially for DCS?

This is what I have and I really love it: https://www.trackhat.org/product-page/trackhat-clip-head-tracking-kit And this is the wireless version: https://www.trackhat.org/product-page/trackhat-clip-plus-head-tracking-kit

Do consoles even have enough buttons to operate a DCS FC3 plane?

I have a hard time believing it's that hard to allow for human door gunners. Plus I have to agree with the guys, door gunners are a major part in combat with the Huey.

Bug Report: F-15 gun accuracy does not match sources

^^ as a matter of fact, the point of this thread is to develop a way to test and solve the exact object of your complaint... -
Headtracking hardware ideas? Anyone?
PeaceSells replied to Aluminum Donkey's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I have this: https://www.trackhat.org/product-page/trackhat-clip-head-tracking-kit And I'm in love with it, works perfectly. As I never had TrackIR, I was curious to see if there was any difference in precision or input lag. After seeing many vids of TrackIR, I got the impression that there is no noticeable difference. You do have to adjust the settings on the opentrack software though... right after installation it felt horribly laggy and imprecise, but after adjusting the curves and parameters it feels amazing. But I suppose you'd also have to adjust the settings for TrackIR. One known difference is that TrackIR has it's own processor inside the camera, so it doesn't use your PC's processor. But I tested in DCS 1.5 and fps was 42 both with my tracking on and off, so I guess it makes no difference for DCS. In Arma 3 it droped from 117 to 112 fps, not a significant difference... -

PeaceSells replied to Aries144's topic in F-15C for DCS World
It's even easier to hit ground targets with the F-15 gun than the Su-27 gun, it can't be the AoA control or the sight... It's the considerably higher spread coupled with the considerably higher rate of fire... -

I have no idea how far the in-game spreads are from the real thing, but I find it considerably easier to hit the enemy using the F-15 gun than the Su-27 gun. It feels like the Su-27 gun in-game has way too little spread. -
I have the T16000 and it's precision, compared to the Logitech Extreme 3d Pro I owned before, is simply absurdly better and the throw is noticeable bigger. So much that I don't use curves or deadzones anymore. But that's only for the the stick's pitch and roll, the twist precision is very bad, even worse than the Logitech's one. It worked well in the beginning but now, less than a year after buying it, the twist is already unusable (needs around 90% deadzone). My other complaint is the lack of buttons on the stick. I got around the twist problem by using the TWCS throttle's paddle axis as rudder for a while, but now I got the TFRP pedals.

Please ED, on next update, make buttons that don't belong to the real aircraft's HOTAS unbindable to HOTAS. Thank you. -

^^ What you're saying makes a lot of sense, specially because there are separated buttons for pitch, yaw and roll AP. I fly as recommended on the forum guides, with the three buttons always engaged and sometimes will use the emergency switch on the stick like you said, that will turn off all three also simultaneously. But if we're always engaging and disengaging all three channels simultaneously, why do we have three separated buttons in the first place? On the other hand, the fact that the AP only has 20% authority makes me think otherwise: that it's supposed to be always on for the three channels, because it lets you maneuver kinda normally even against the AP. Not only @159th_Viper demonstrated it in his last video, but coincidentally when he posted that was about the same time I caught myself maneuvering without using the trim for relatively prolonged periods without realizing it. Plus you have to consider that the real benefit of having the three AP channels on AND FD off AND trim button not hold down is the incredible stability for doing strafing runs or firing Vikhrs. And this is at the same time the exact moment when ability to maneuver is most critical too. So from that I understand that you're meant to maneuver while having the three AP channels on, and that's the reason for AP having only 20% authority... -
If you live in Rio de Janeiro - Brazil, you can go now to the Village Mall and visit the event called "A Era dos Games". The ticket costs R$ 20,00 which is like 6 dollars (if you go by car you'll probably pay some more for the parking too). If you're entitled to half-price ticket (student, etc.) you can pay only R$ 10,00. There you can try a bit of the Vive VR. It will last till about the end of February. http://aeradosgames.com.br/ What can I say, is it worth going there? NO and YES... NO, because the game available there is so boring it doesn't make you interested... or at least it didn't impress me at all. The title on the screen was Xortex 26XX, but from what I understand it was just a part of it, called "Classic". Did I feel immersed? Yes, immersed in a boring small unrealistic and monochromatic room with flying spheres that you have to shoot while they try to shoot you. I didn't notice any defect like movement lag, graphic issue or even the famous 'screen door effect', but then again it was all so quick, and I was instinctively more concentrated in killing the spheres and not doing bad in front of the staff lady, that I might have missed any problem. After leaving, I asked the lady if there will be any more titles, and she said no... I can only imagine it must be great with more interesting titles like DCS... YES, because it is an opportunity to satisfy that burning curiosity about VR. I don't know about you, but I had a CRAVING URGENT BURNING HUNGRY THIRSTY UNCONTROLLABLE curiosity to try VR (still have). And the feeling of immersion is there and it's good. Plus considering the actual price of VR here, this is a way to try VR without selling your soul to the devil. After leaving Rio, I guess the event will go to other cities, but I'm not sure.

For those who trim by tapping the trim button
PeaceSells replied to PeaceSells's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
But... do you think real shark pilots keep removing their hand from the stick everytime they want to make heading adjustments (remember that the heading channel button in the real shark is not on the stick)? -
Please ED, update 2.1! I need to play this!
-
This is normal. It happens because the autopilot is continuously actuating to help keeping the heli still. When you press the trim button, part of the autopilot actuation stops instantly, resulting in sudden unwanted heli movement. This is unavoidable, you can only lessen it by trimming after small inputs only, and trimming very frequently. Or you can turn off autopilot or turn on Flight Director mode. What created confusion in this thread is that in your 1st post (and thread title) you said that the wiggle occurs at trim releasing, which isn't true, it occurs at trim pressing which is when it's supposed to occur. There should be no wiggle at trim releasing, only at trim pressing, if you use the "Central Position Trimmer Mode".

IMO the old Caucasus is already the best map, not only in DCS but in all sims I've played. As has been said, it has everything: mountains, valleys, plane areas, urban areas, sea, lakes, etc. The visual technology is outdated, but it still looks awesome. The only thing that detracts from it really is the un-collideable trees that don't block AI view, but that's more of a problem if you fly choppers and almost ignorable if you fly jets, specially A2A. I'm only afraid I'll loose FPS migrating from the old to the new Caucasus, since my FPS in urban areas of Nevada aren't that great and considering Caucasus also has lots of urban areas and MUCH MUCH more trees!

Soldiers / human targets reaction to death

Hmm... that's weird, I have a Thrustmaster TWCS throttle and its mini-stick is recognized by DCS as axes, not mouse...
