  1. Don't listen to him make more videos :D Make a commercial showing why the Viggen is superior to the Mig21 in the ground attack role like all car salesmen do when the new model comes :D
  2. I found this neat PDF made by the association Datasaabs Friends. It covers the development of the Viggen's CK-37 computer which enabled the aircraft to forego the Navigatior and only have a Pilot. http://www.datasaab.se/Papers/Articles/Viggenck37.pdf Come to think of it Leatherneck must have built a CK-37 emulator that is running in every Viggen !
  3. Found this Flickr page from someone who had photographed the F15 Museum lot's of Viggen Weapons showcased ! https://www.flickr.com/photos/hjakse/albums/72157630344994416 Vapenkärra by Hans Jakobsson, on Flickr
  4. The J35A Draken had the same radar as the Mirage III later versions got better radars and datalinks. 2:nd nation after US Air Defence Command ! Here's how the Draken datalink worked it start at the PS-08 search radar in the bottom left
  5. The Danes had the longest Ranged Draken's the type got more internal and external fuel volume throughout it's development. The J35A had the least fuel then the J35B got more internal volume. The J35D which is a J35B avionics wise got more internal fuel but also a more powerfull engine that drank more. The Danes bought the F35 version (yes the Danes will probably have had two aircraft called F35 in a few years) which increased the fuel load by throwing out much of the avionics like the radar and also redesigning the outer wings and other bits. This version had the same internal fuel as a J35D with it's two external tanks. The Danes also bought huge 1200L external tanks of which 2 was carried, these where bought back by Sweden and are now seen on the Gripen. In Sweden the S35E recon Draken could carry 4 drop tanks but only the standard 525l ones but the Swedish tanks where capable of Supersonic flight. The last Draken variant the J35J did not only get two extra pylons for AIM-9P3 sidewinders but also got wet wing pylons so 4 Drop tanks could be carried just like in the S35E.
  6. The next Grudge match i expect BK90's to hit the enemy flight line :D
  7. Saab offered to sell the Viggen to Australia in 1972.
  8. I always like the Draken more than the Viggen. The Viggen came out of the Swedish defence industry during the 60's at around the same time as the S-tank and the Bandkanon 1. This was a period when politicians started to look more to the jobs that could be "Created" with military projects than to how much sense they made from a cost benefit perspective. In the beginning over 700 aircraft where planned but this was cut down so much the Chief of the air force wanted to stop the project in the mid 60's because it didn't make enough sense from a cost benefit perspective to continue. If this had been the case Sweden would probably have bought the F4 Phantom. The Viggen project gutted the air force as it had to be reduced in size dramatically to fit the cost overruns Fighter squadrons around Stockholm went from 12 to three as an example. Too few Strike Viggen's where also delivered for the air force to dare risk it in Northern Sweden so light trainers armed with rockets where the only ground support the army could expect in the north. The armament was also limited due to the cost. The Viggen actually has 9 hardpoints and has always had. But on the AJ37 viggen only 5 of those where available of which one was for the drop tank and 2 more where sacrificed if ECM and Chaff/Flares wanted to be carried. The JA-37 Viggen could use 7 pylons but it could only carry rockets for ground attack, it was also so limited in numbers the Draken had to soldier on until the Gripen arrived in the 90's. Only one Viggen has used all 9 Pylons and that is the JA-37D which got chaff and Flare dispensers fitted fitted to the last two 500kg capable pylons behind the landing gear wells. In all i think the Viggen in an excellent aircraft but it got too expensive which meant so much had to be sacrificed in order to get the basic Jet it severely limited the aircraft's usefulness and surviveability.
  9. If you place the scanned object in exactly the same place and put the camera in exactly the same place and use a picture database program like Lightroom you can edit one page and then export it to the rest. I had a similar problem when i photographed apartments so i bought a geared tripod head for fine tuning on all axis. You have a more complex problem as the setup has 6 degrees of freedom instead of just 3 like i have. Get something you can put the document on and make sure the camera is pointing straight at it in all axis and you should have far less problems !
  10. I read about how the Viggen squadrons would act in case of an attack. A plan evolved where all the aircraft would be fueled and would take off even without armament in case of hostilities. The planes would fly along the Norwegian border at the most fuel economic speed they could which was out of range of Russian fighters. During the 2-3 hours the planes where safe in the sky the ground-crews would get weapons ready so the planes could land arm up and fly off to engage the enemy. This whole tactic was tested during an exercise where it succeed spectacularly.
  11. I would probably say that the RB 05 is the best of any of the MCLOS missiles developed. The guidance controls for the pilot where rigorously evaluated for the best interface. A Liquid fuel engine was used in order to provide smokeless thrust to the missile. The Viggen had automatic autopilot takeover when a missile was launched so the Pilot didn't need to concentrate on flying. The missile also had numerous fusing options available in the cockpit. On the other hand the missile was delivered at about the same time that the AGM-65 and other smart weapons entered the scene !
  12. With modern graphics cards one has monitor interfaces coming out of once ears, so one could just get a small monitor for the scope and one for the radar !
  13. Here's a Swedish Roadbase ! One of the few ones left ! The main Runway is clearly identifiable with the secondary runways being smaller and shorter and part of "roads" ! http://kartor.eniro.se/m/l7gb6
  14. Viggen's "Road Landing" is basically a short takeoff and landing distance and the ability to sustain carrier like sink rates when landing. It is not like the Russian aircraft that has mud guards and other things to use grass strips !
  15. The Missile's battery last's for 24 seconds if the aircraft travel at Mach .75 the missile will reach it's maximum speed of Mach 1.5 after 5 seconds and the missile should be able to fly 11 km ! That's from the AJ 37 manual "del 2 kap 1" PDF page 68
  16. Definite AWACS and HELO killer !
  17. Yes but they where never carried during the anti shipping raids when the Viggen could have launched RB04 first and then finished off the ships with RB 75T's.
  18. Monitors are so cheap these days and graphics cards have so much support for it i can't imagine flight sim enthusiasts not using multiple monitors.
  19. I imagine someone who get's real good at using the RB05 will be able to pull off some crazy kills !
  20. Here is an example of an RB24J that's "Blind" which means "inert" the missile obviously has the seeker head though so it can be used in mock dogfights. As a Sidenote you can see the difference in the Proximity fuzes between the RB24 and RB24J, on the RB24 it's those "holes" just below the white areas and on the 24J it's where that reflection below where "Blind" is written !
  21. The Swedish mavericks might have been TV guided but they had two warhead options. The RB-75T had a heavier mine warhead for use against buildings bridges and ships. The RB-75 (vanilla) has a regular HEAT warhead. I was surprised the RB-75T wasn't used in the Grudge match as the Viggen can carry two of them in addition to the RB-04E.
  22. I found this article in a "Flygvapennytt" from 1972 talking about the development of the "high-tech" RB 05. It's on Page 24 in the PDF which i found on the aef.se website. Sadly it's in Swedish http://www.aef.se/Flygvapnet/Tidskrifter/FV_Nytt/Flygvapennytt_1972-4.pdf It's a bit of a puff-piece that mentions the stick is tailor made after input from pilots in its design. The Swedish air force has historically been at the forefront of ergonomics. The Missile is described as highly maneuverable and designed to be shot without first pointing the aircraft at the target.
  23. Don't forget the batshit US navy fighters of the period like the F4D Skyray It's not a Phantom variant and neither is the FJ-4 Fury which is a completley different aircraft. Man the US Navy sure like the no:4 !
  24. According to the now dormant Blog of "Chefsingengören" who is an ex Viggen pilot the JT-8D (RM8A) engine's Afterburner has a 108hp fuel pump and a 10cm(4-inch) fuel line. It guzzles fuel so quickly you can run out of fuel in the main tank without being out of fuel because the interlinking pumps (to wing tanks etc) can't keep up.
