A fantastic looking model. But what is this?
-
The AI does this if you get behind them even without launching.
-
Nice! How do you achieve the slightly dirty look while not overpowering the paint colour underneath?
-
Yeah, this has me purplexed too. 2.5 took a lot of work and a lot of time to arrive. I'm concerned that they seem to be replacing that. Perhaps it turned out to be just a stop gap. Maybe, with the need to better support VR, go to multi-core, etc, ED worked out that even though they'd made that massive investment in 2.5 they had to replace the graphics engine again? Don't get me wrong - if ED replace the graphics engine with a better one, that enables much better technology and better performance then that's a good thing. I just hope it doesn't turn out to be a much longer endeavour than has been implied so far. I actually quite like the terrain as it is. Maybe a new terrain engine is needed for the A-G radar? It would be interesting to hear from ED why a new terrain engine is needed.

Hmmm. If they get this GFM sorted then I gotta say I think I'd be up for buying the F-86. Or perhaps the Mig 15. 50's era dogfighting does sound fun.

Great! Thanks for the update and I'm glad you got it working!

Yeah please ignore that. For some reason flight sims seem to attract a minority of nerds with high IQ but super low EQ. Most of us are normal (ish!). None of that is necessary at all. You may, once you are familar with the game, want to do some customisation involving editing the text based config files (LUAs). That can come later, or never. If it comes later then it's actually very easy to do. We can talk you through that when the time comes. -
Ok so \ is the comms button you would use for easy comms. I don't use \ ever or even have it mapped to anything on my HOTAS. Keep easy comms turned off. In the Viper, use "Transmit Switch - UHF" and "Transmit Switch - VHF" for UHF and VHF comms. Map them to two separate buttons. I have them mapped to throttle buttons personally. As long as you've set the frequencies properly in the DED using the ICP, then these transmit switches will work fine. You will no longer use \. I can't tell you what the Hornet equivalent controls are because I don't own it.

Look for an Asus, Gigabyte, MSI or similar 'gaming' motherboard. That sort of thing will see you right. Ideally, check that your RAM chips are compatible with the board. Most combos work fine but sometimes there are issues. There's no PC programming required for DCS and patching is super easy. Building your first PC can be nerve wracking but it's actually fairly easy. Check out Youtube for PC building guides and you'll be ok. You don't need to find another hobby. You've got great times ahead of you if you go for it. -
Sure, but how are you opening the menu? What button are you using?
-
Absolutely! I would only add, feel free ED to release incremental changes to the GFM in beta and let us 'test' them out rather than wait for the initial implementation of all features and releasing it in one big bang. Really liking the focus on the core AI stuff. It's what I've wanted to see and makes me feel good about buying modules and supporting ED in that way.

It is available right now (I am downloading).

Sounds like you're using easy comms. I recommend binning it. I used to use easy comms but now I don't and the immersion is better. When transmitting, are you using the intercom/communication menu key or the proper UHF and VHF transmitting keys? (sorry I can't remember the proper terms for those).
-
Thanks for the detailed and helpful reply! I've seen a lot of Tamiya kits around in the UK, but never would have known that it was a better quality brand. I'll bear that in mind next time I'm in a model shop.

I'm starting out in model making and have only tried Airfix models so far. What is better about the other manufacturer's plastic, and what sort of difference does it make to the making process?
-
Much better to have a temporary fix. The brilliant things about being human is that when the full implementation comes we will adopt it easily and quickly.
-
Glad you got it working. It can all be a bit tricky until it falls into place.

From the preset frequency (305.00 in my above example) dobber down (ICP Data Control Switch - DOWN) once. Then press the number of the preset you need on the ICP panel and press ENTR. However, while it tunes to that frequency it won't show you what it is - only what the preset number for that frequency is. There is also a (probable) bug where dobbering down the preset numbers shows each the preset frequency but doesn't change the corresponding preset label until you dobber down to the preset frequency. Which is annoying.
-
So I've been practicing and here's how presets can be edited, which I hope helps someone. In the bottom left corner of the DED, on the VHF or UHF screens there are two lines like this: PRE 1 <> 305.00 (but up down arrows, not left right) That shows the available presets, and if you dobber down to select the bottom line (305.00 in my example) and enter a number, that allows you to edit the frequency for that preset channel. You still need to enter in the preset channel number to change to that preset (as described by LazyBoot).

Oh, so it's a backup. That makes sense now. Oh ok! Will do from now on. I'm been using 'main' up to now. Thanks for the help!

I'm struggling to master the Viper radio (easy comms off). I do get comms but it can be hit and miss and my understanding is not 100%. Are there any good instructional documents or videos around? I've had a look but not found much. The EA guide is very light on the subject. Can anyone tell me how the UHF panel (left side of cockpit) affects radio usage? I've been using the DED to enter frequencies and select presets. The UHF panel doesn't seem to do much. If I set a preset on the UHF panel it doesn't seem to affect COM1. The preset in DED stays the same. Perhaps an EA thing? Perhaps my misunderstanding. Can the DED be used currently to edit the frequency of a specific preset? I've been trying to change COM1 and 2 channel to a particular preset but wonder if I've been editing the preset frequency instead. Should I set the UHF radio to 'MAIN' or 'BOTH'? Thanks in advance!

F-16C & CBU-97 SFW, ED went above and beyond
bell_rj replied to Spudknocker's topic in DCS: F-16C Viper
Yeah I was CBUing some innocent trucks earlier tonight and saw the floaty parachute things in F3 view - looked amazing. Top job ED! -
Excellent!

Hello ED, do the new combat AI tweaks only apply currently to AI warbirds or modern jets too?
