PointCTRL - Finger Mounted VR Controller
mariner3302 replied to MilesD's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
The idea and function of PC is to allow interaction with the VR cockpit in a realistic fashion. It essentially makes the button box unnecessary and it eliminates the need to bind controls. Continuing to use the button box for cockpit control binds is going to negate what PC brings to you. In covered triggers, you will probably have some interference but that remains to be seen. Most HOTAS controls aren't effected by the FCU's. Edit - if you have something in the way of the FCU as you reach to manipulate a control, obviously you will hit it. As Ive stated before, those of us with home Pits have to be a bit more careful in pointing in VR than those that dont. It is completely possible to touch a control without a full reach so you dont hit the physical Pit you have. You just dont reach that far out. I think you will be best served to move the button box. Having said that, I havent had any issues hitting my Pit (pictured) in any aircraft that I have, to include props, jets, and helos.- 3421 replies

PointCTRL - Finger Mounted VR Controller
mariner3302 replied to MilesD's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Sorry folks, I unexpectedly had to take apart the entire front end of my 2004 F-350 4x4 Dually to rebuild it. Putting it back together today if I can get the parts.. LOL Never a dull moment... So I was a tad, um, detained. Thanks for taking the question for me, Miles! I love this group!! I also have had no problems with the Warthog HOTAS as a whole.Wearing FCU's takes a very little bit of getting used to. The FCU finger straps are elastic and should be fairly loose on your finger. At first you want to make them tight but you will realize after your finger turns blue and cold that loose is the way to go. The new FCU enclosure/housing has been beefed up in the strap attachment area.:music_whistling: Miles is leaving a little bit of slack in the elastic 'buckle' so you can easily adjust the elastic band. Again, it is NOT necessary to crank this elastic. The FCU should be light on your finger. The buttons are easy to push so just enough elastic tension to keep the FCU from rolling on your finger. I know I am stressing this point but it is something that I think deserves emphasis. Start loose and tighten slowly until just right for you. The name of the game is 'VR Immersion', everything else is secondary. I really do love having the ability to reach up and adjust brightness knobs and switches in the Huey with my left hand just as I would in the real life bird!! Any manipulation is cool as hell, but that is my favorite! If I had known it was going to be this damn cool, I would have waited to build the Tomcat Cockpit.- 3421 replies

When you reach to push a button on the FCU, it gives you a reference point so you aren't guessing which button you are pushing.- 3421 replies

I've had a chance to buy a real fully functional thottle quadrant for a VERY reasonable price. That forward panel is rediculous tho. You might get the switches and buttons working but lights and all, no. You really have to watch for fakes. Especially Tomcat stuff. That doesn't look used at all.

I didn't have to recalibrate after the update. There are no user files. Its internal. So if someone else used PC, it is possible they may want to calibrate it to their needs. You will find calibration isn't that big of a deal and is easy. PC is pretty simple in its use so try not to overthink it.- 3421 replies

That is correct. The calibration stays as set until a new calibration is completed. I suggest that you do a complete and correct calibration first. Then use PointCTRL for a few days and get used to how and what it does for you. Then, if you wish, you can re-run calibration again to fine tune PointCTRL to your liking. Because I have a physical F-14B 'Pit, I moved my FCU settings closer in to account for the difference in size between the VR view and the 'Pit.- 3421 replies

That sure was an 'AAHHHHHH OOOKKKK!!!!!' moment! lmao So all you folks out there that use the white dot/blue cross fixed to the center of your VR view... and move your head to place it over whatever you want to manipulate.. then you click a mouse button or a mapped mouse button like I did... THIS IS FOR YOU!!! lol- 3421 replies

PointCTRL is actually easy to setup/install, calibrate, and use. There aren't many steps and after you have done them a few times, you are there. Kind of like a bicycle... you don't get it - crash, you don't get it - crash, then - oh, I got it and you don't crash much anymore. Most of the 'kinks' have been in figuring out how to get the new owner to see and understand then do the few steps necessary to get up and running. Don't overthink the instructions. Just do what is asked and depicted. If you miss a step or something, start over-you'll get it. It may be an idea to start a separate thread for PointCTRL owners to ask and answer questions and leave this thread for buying and interest. I know that those of us that have had the privilege of testing PointCTRL are EXTREMELY excited to hear how cool you are all going to find it to be! For those that have just a HOTAS, pedals, maybe a button box - this is really, REALLY going to up your VR game.- 3421 replies

You will be! It has been just awesome working with Miles and using PointCTRL! I even put it in my signature! I don't get paid and generally don't like or dislike stuff but the Jetseat and PointCTRL are must haves for VR folks!! You will see what I mean when you get yours! Be glad you signed up early because this is going to take off!! :pilotfly:- 3421 replies

When you really need something tested - Go Marine Recon! Ladies and Gents, get set to have your immersion level go ballistic! Yes, I am Tester 1.. Yes, I broke the FCU housing. No, it wasn't the FCU's fault! lol The PointCTRL experience is AWESOME! Most of the items I have worked on are very minor and aren't related to the HMS and FCU build quality, tech, or operation. Mostly we have worked on how to get everyone to understand what to do, when, and how. Hence the instructions coming out and being added to. Once the correct operating environment is in place, calibrating and using PointCTRL is very simple. It, like anything, takes a bit of getting used to but it really is amazing. You are going to love it! One MAJOR thing we found is that you HAVE to have the "Use Mouse" box checked in the Settings VR tab. So if you are like me and used the cursor locked to the middle of your VR view, then looked at the switch you wanted to select, then pushed a mapped mouse button to select that item... well, not gonna be able/have to do that anymore. Yes, I found that out, hold your applause til the end, please! lol I have been using the Huey mainly as I get to know PointCTRL. Instead of mapping switches and dials, etc - Now, I reach up to the overhead panel and turn the lighting dial up or down just by twisting my hand. I can glance over at the rocket control panel on my extreme left side and adjust how many rockets to fire at once. Flipping switches that usually I would have to twist to look at before are done just like in real life. I fly Real Life helo's and can tell you, Miles' little gem makes it really FEEL real! Watching PointCTRL come to life and to the market has been very interesting. I know everyone is chomping at the bit. Well, it is coming NOW! It has REALLY been worth the wait, I promise!! you!!!- 3421 replies

One thing that needs to be set is a time feature on orders. So the folks in the 1-10 (or whatever) number range release have x amount of days to complete the transaction. After that, they get put on hold and the unit slated for them is sent to the next number up for shipment until they set-up payment. That way PC units are getting sold and shipped as soon as possible without this growing list of folks who either are away or slow to act. Maybe they have to save to get it or are away from the computer, on vacation or whatever. It will surely happen that people either can't or won't respond.- 3421 replies

Definitely agree! I would prefer manual activation. In my personal case, the PC (PointCTRL) will be recharged exactly like my headphones. They automatically turn off when plugged in. Some VR HMD's are coming out with USB ports in them to power peripherals. A motion sensor could be an option for turning the unit off when not used after a timeout but after this amount of time, a few days or even a week or two is worth the wait if it means substantial operability or capability improvements to the hardware. Software updates, not so much. They can be done, and I would suspect need to be done, later as the units get large scale use. I absolutely understand and concur on putting off the live-stream. Maybe at an anniversary or something like a new market roll-out. I see our role as a collective group of first run users in the development of PC. I can honestly see a market out there of a huge scale. Not just DCS, but in VR as a whole. It might take a bit to get there but it certainly has massive potential. To get there we MUST give timely, precise, and REPEATABLE feedback of problems and possible improvements.- 3421 replies

Miles has a lot to do and since we have a good amount of folks tuned in to this thread, lets just keep it like it is. Release is nearing, we can answer questions as they come up. I think that a Saturday stream would give the majority of folks an opportunity to be in on it live. A give-away is an interesting idea but personally I don't think it is necessary. Nor would it be an easy, non complicated thing to do. I think instead of a give-away that a bump from whatever number a person is at to an immediate shipment would be better. It not only takes revenue from the developer (Miles) but that free unit could go to anyone, including those tuning in accidently.- 3421 replies

I have had that for quite a long time and while 100 times better than messing with a mouse, it lacks that physical feeling of flipping a switch. This will be a real game changer for anyone with home cockpits! I made a full scale Tomcat pilot setup. Right now I reach for the switch or button, knob, etc and get really close to it but since I can't see my hand and where it is in relation to the VR world, I can't make it quite real. This will solve that. I shudder to think of the money and time that Miles has sunk into this so far. I can't throw money at him fast enough. I would love to see an article on how the project came about, all the steps and path through the project, lessons learned, after action - call it what you will document/article. We don't get to see that path very often. Miles, you are a credit to your Greeniehood!- 3421 replies

It comes from when being asked when something will be ready for release or such like that, the standard response always seems to be "Two more weeks!!!".
