Nice screen screen shot GG!:smilewink:

How in the world did you manage that? There are like 8 activations and 10 deactivations. Seriously, you have to be really, really careless to allow that. And if you need additional activations you can probably get them by contacting DCS. That's not to say I like the system but unfortunately the cost of piracy is we have to put up DRM.

I really don't understand the point of bombs
Coolhnd1 replied to asa1997's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
My guess is they have bombs because the real KA-50s have bombs and the reason for that is likely cost. After all dumb bombs are cheap and relatively plentiful so why not put them to use. -
I really don't think you can say it's been done with Arma at least (I haven't played OFP). Although Arma does have some aspects of flight in the engine at best you'd have to say it's a very simple flight simulator with major simplifications because of the rather small world represented in the game. There's an online game called battleground Europe that does have a fairly sophisticated flight sim combined with an reasonably sophisticated FPS where you can play as a pilot, sailer, soldier or tank driver all in the same game. granted it's based on world war II so you don't get jets or hellicopitors but it shows at least that this sort of thing can be done. It isn't easy though and from what I understand requires a very specialized engine.

I think there was a problem with the RC1 edition where the root folder wasn't getting the proper permissions which meant if you installed something directly off the root folder it was causing some programs to fail because of this. They put out a patch a few days after the RC1 became available to fix this but if you didn't apply the patch or installed something between installing Win 7 and the applying the patch it might cause problems. I don't know if that's the situation here. I would think you'd probably have a lot more problems than just not being able to change settings. I'm guessing it's more likely a driver issue.

I was about to say something similar to Safari Ken. I saw BS for the first time in Best Buy sitting near where FSX is. For people interested in a serious flight sim this is where they'll likely look first. If you move it to the top shelf where something like COD4 or HAWX is people might associate BS with that genre of PC Games and bypass it completely. Maybe the thing to do is move a few copies to the top shelf but leave the rest where they are if they are positioned with other "serious" flight sims.

DCS: How to gain performance on Windows Vista (Windows 7)
Coolhnd1 replied to eV1Te's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
Even CUDA isn't good for all CPU type tasks as it doesn't have direct access to other systems on the computer like the hard drive or even system memory. It's mainly good for number crunching types of tasks. -
You have to laugh at how a thread that started out asking how you can make the Ka-50 go a certain speed ends being a technical discussion on the metric system because of a joke that was initially taken the wrong way.

Living proof that you can't teach an old dog new tricks
Coolhnd1 replied to Santini's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
Or like in F4 where ATC tells you after they clear you to land to "Check Gear Down". I do get in the habit of checking it then so it might not be a bad idea in BS as well. -
Try increasing the amount of time before the monitor goes to standby in the power settings. To tell you the truth there are few games I use including Black Shark where I don't use the mouse or keyboard at least occasionally. I generally have only have the most commonly used functions mapped to my HOSTAS. I'm always clicking on the ABRIS, looking at the map or clicking to setup my weapons as I approach enemy territory.

I've heard worse pickup lines.:smilewink:

Just to add my two cents. I had a problem with BS where after installing a game that included a DirectX upgrade. It caused BS to error when it attempted to load a mission with a DirectX error. I decided the only way to fix it was to try and reinstall BS so it could install it's version of DirectX back in. I didn't bother to deactivate it since I hadn't changed any hardware or the OS. Sure enough after reinstalling BS worked fine and I didn't lose any activations (reinstalling BS's version of DirectX didn't bother the other game either). The lesson being if the OS doesn't change and you're not changing any hardware you don't have to worry. If these things do change just remember to deactivate first.

That was what DCS originally intended until some pirates got a hold of the game and started offering it on warez sites. Then they decided they had to go the activation scheme. It's unfortunate but it seems it's the way it is these days.

Yeah, having a FAC would be great. I'm not sure why you'd use an object in the game to act as your FAC though. Besides not being terribly realistic, especially if it can't be destroyed by the enemy you'd be stuck in one place all the time. Why not just send a Ka-50 to act as the FAC and keep them well out of range of any enemy formations? You could use TeamSpeak to give targets to people in the game. unless your in the same flight I don't think you'd be able to send targets electronically to anyone though. I'm not sure how that's done in real life but I'm guessing with the all effort now going on in the military to network information these days a FAC probably could send electronic target information to any formation in the area. Now if ED ever gets some fighter plane addons done and they modeled an E3..

You know F4 had a nice way of handling this. It would give you a choice before each mission of either starting on the runway with engines running or in the parking area cold and dark. If you choose cold and dark you'd start at an earlier time (in the game world) to give enough time to start the engine and take off and still make your IP on time. Kind of put some preasure on you to really know the start up routine well though as there wasn't much time to fumble around in the cockpit and still get to your steer points on time.

I'd do a search of the forums about this since I think there are several threads on this very subject. I'm still learning to fly the thing at low levels so I haven't gotten to the point where I have to fly over tall mountains yet.
-
Your not much into games are you?:smilewink: By the way..where's your Linux Box? Seriously though it sounds like a killer rig. Not sure I'd have gone the extreme route because of the price but the i7 should be a very, very nice CPU. I know I'll be looking to update my rig at the end of this year and I expect it will be something in the i7 family although even on my current rig BS runs very nicely.

I agree with shabo..your best option is to get a desktop. You've already got a labtop for portable computing and you get much better bang for the buck in terms of computing power with a desktop.

I have to admit I'm one of those. Now I know the precise meaning. Knew it wasn't a compliment though :D

What differnce does it make really. I imagine some people just prefer to have the physical DVD while others just can't wait and downloaded it (that was me). Now services like steam..don't get me started on that!

For what it's worth FAKUM I completely agree with what you said. I'm disappointed that the DCS printed manual will still have the Russian labels since I fly with the english labels but I can deal with that I guess. Who knows, I might even start remembering some of the Russian I learned in College too.

Well, the low tech solution is to use a real physical map. I don't know if anyone has created a Map you can print out of the area in the sim but it seems to be that might be one solution. On top that, it's a realistic option that might help with the immersion of the game. Is there a way of extracting the terrain data used by the game to create a topographical map that would include cities, towns, villages, rivers, roads, etc?
-
I use it simply by assigning it in-game, no profile. works pretty good for me. The only issue I've seen is when I zoom and stop sometimes I get a little bit of "shakiness" which I can usually cure just by pressing on the slider a little. I'm assuming the shakiness is from a slightly flaky contact.
-
I would expect that the increase will likely be directly related to the relative clock frequency difference of the CPUs since it looks like your staying in the same CPU Processor family. I don't know what the difference in clock frequencies for the AMD X2 CPUs are that you mention but for instance if the 4000+ runs at 2 Ghz and the 7750+ runs at 3Ghz I'd expect a jump approximately of 50%. This would just be a rule of thumb however since other things like cache size can also make a significant differance.

Umm...these are all for pre-orders. It's not available yet. The fact that you can preorder these is hardly a secret.
