  1. I wasn't particularly bothered about Afghanistan but this has piqued my interest. I will most likely hold off until there is at least a half decent release date set though.
  2. Did you not consider circling back around to pick yourself up?
  3. I'd swear it also got a little more tricky to 'grease it' when they did the update a few months back to make the gear a little less indestructible, but it is indeed very possible to do a flared landing. I'd say there is only the F-15 that is easier to put down on the deck gracefully. I still haven't mastered landing the Phantom in a fashion that doesn't dislodge any fillings from your teeth though.

Given some of my wayward early efforts against targets on the old airfield then i'm pretty certain the church is not there anymore

I feel kinda bad now that i've discovered there is a church nearby.
  6. I presume what you were referring to is the hinged outer cap that protects the docking mechanism (the actual pressure door would be at the cabin end of the docking tunnel). Without knowing how automated the crewless re-entry process is then one assumes it gets closed either by remote command or by the onboard computer. Obviously its mechanically operated otherwise they wouldn't have been able to open it to dock in the first place. The Dragon capsule has a similar thing.
  7. I graciously decline taking the unwarranted credit and i'm also glad the OP got the issue sorted
  8. A 500 error suggests it might well be an issue on DCS' validation server rather than an issue on the client machine.
  9. RAF tinkered with a few radio based systems with varying degrees of assistance and success (Oboe, Gee, Gee H) as did the Luftwaffe. All for bombers though given the kit and crew resource required. Certainly nothing like modern radio nav aids in terms of end user experience.
  10. Having seen it do several displays IRL then it is remarkably nimble with no load/low fuel.
  11. I've not mixed with Winwing but have Virpil + VKB currently (was CH + VKB). The only real challenge you're ever likely going to run into if you want use modes to completely change the mappings on all devices at the flick of a switch (I do this via Joystick Gremlin and previously used JoytoKey). I pretty much never touch the brand-specific software except for calibration/initial axis setup purposes.
  12. I'm glad to be corrected but i'm not sure you can for those panels. Although there is an app that basically replicate those displays to an Android tablet and has the benefit that the UFC can be used for input as well as just output.
  13. Seeing the same thing here (legacy FC3 owner, haven't bought FC2024)
  14. They wouldn't necessarily have to update every single one but they may well have to regularly rebuild ones that are direct touchpoints to the core DCS code. The ones tripping of certain A/V products is a more complicated issue that can be for a multitude of reasons (and i've been gaming long enough to have seen it happen a few times with other titles down the years for no good reason). And yeah, i'd agree the general situation is a highly imperfect current state of affairs and I don't think anyone would disagree on that score.
  15. They might well just rebuild them as a matter of course on every release. Without being able to compare them with prior versions it is difficult to judge if any actual change occurred.
  16. Same here. I'll just park it in the hangar for a little while longer, see if it gets fixed and then go from there.
  17. Mostly Razbam in this instance. Irrespective of whether or not the relationship with DCS is restored, this is going to follow them wherever they go next.
  18. "Came to become a hero, left as a Health & Safety case study"
  19. I assume thats an 'always on' switch? (I don't own the Warthog). Makes sense though in the absence of a bindable latching option. I'll look into it.
  20. One thing that has been bugging me is whether there is a way to latch the NWS steering on or off? Fair enough if its unrealistic for it to be always on, but it'd certainly be a bit more convenient if the option exists.
  21. I just had my first crack at it, as is the tradition with any plane not meant to land on a carrier. First pass was a bolter, second pass I landed. Looking on the track I got the first approach badly wrong and all the weight went onto the nose after initial touchdown, so no shock it didn't bite. Second pass was the 1 wire (I wasn't looking for points, just to live!) It actually went better than by debut attempt with the Strike Eagle where I caught a wire first time but the pilot blacked out when the nose came down and the nose wheel wouldn't retract when I left again. Getting back off the deck with a long run-up was also remarkably easy (had refuelled to about 40% too) and the jet appeared to make it back to land in showroom condition still.
  22. No CTDs for me since release and i've mostly been flying it around Kola.
  23. I haven't found the taxi handling too bad if you keep the speed down. Although it seems to be a proper handful for me if you try and correct direction on takeoff roll with rudder. I need to figure out if I need to apply some curve or something to the rudder axis as it seems to just leap in one direction even with slight rudder input.
  24. Things that are easier over the newer jets - No MFDs to worry about - Jester feels like a marked improvement over the F-14 implementation Things I think are harder - No info in the HUD & its all steam gauges, and there are a lot of them - As someone else mentioned, the cockpit layout isn't exactly intuitive/ergonomic and takes some learning and getting used to - Nothing like CCIP for bombing, so to get any kind of real accuracy you're having to deal with the bombing table pop-up and tweaking the HUD sight and then also deliver the weapons at the speed/altitude/profile you said you would - Radar is distinctly rudimentary, almost decorative at times - There are a lot of things that get in the way when trying to look out of the window As was mentioned, if you get along with the F-5 then you'll probably get on with this. And i've found it easier to fly than the F-14 in most ways.
  25. Normal day at the office then.
