  1. The meter shows when motion smoothing is activated by going from green to yellow. Red means that even though motion smoothing is on you’re falling below acceptable FPS. Several things can cause this but as I’ve said before, your system specs are close enough to mine that something is amiss. One thing you should check is The second type of motion smoothing available in the SteamVR/Settings/Applications/DCS. You have 4 options. 1. Global setting (default) use this one. 2. Always On. 3. Force On NEVER USE. 4. Always Disable. Check the first option and forget about it. If you force it on it will show results in the meter like you’re seeing. If that’s not it, you need to set a good baseline that should damn sure work lol. In SteamVR/Settings Tab/Video 1. check box for motion smoothing. 2. Check box for custom resolution 3. Set Custom Resolution 188% This is the only slider that should be above 100%. Next go to SteamVR/Settings/Applications/DCS and make sure it is set to 100%. Do the same thing for every application listed. Make sure everyone of them are at 100%. This includes SteamVR App, Dashboard et al, EVERY APP needs to be at 100%. Also if there’s an option for any type of motion smoothing like there is for DCS, set it to Global. Next, set Pixel Density in game to 1.0. Turn off MSAA, Texture Shadows, Terrain shadows, cockpit global illumination, SSAA, Depth of field, civilian traffic and motion blur. Set everything else on the left column to high. Set preload to 130,000, Trees to 80%, grass clutter low for now and chimney smoke off. Lastly set Anisotropic Filtering to 16. Once you’ve made these changes restart SteamVR and DCS and then see how it looks. It will not be spectacular but you should be able to see everything clearly and your frame rates should be rock solid at 45 unless it’s super busy. Even if it dips it shouldn't be bad enough that you don’t enjoy it. If these settings work, making DCS playable, while also being clear both in the pit and looking out of the pit you can begin to turn other settings up again. If these settings don’t work, my suggestion is you look at your SSD and M.2 configuration. With DCS, it’s best to have the game on the same drive as the OS. Lastly, how does the Index perform with other games? Last question.. What refresh rate are you using? 140Hz, 120Hz, 90Hz or 60Hz?
  2. This. If and when we have a DTC option you’ll be able to set up your MFD pages for each master mode, program chaff and flares, set steerpoints, set targets, radio freq’s and more before getting in the jet. For now the above is how it’s done allowing it to also be done on the fly so to speak.
  3. I’m obsessive when stuff doesn’t act like it should lol. The whole reason I made the switch to DCS was for VR. I happily flew a different Viper sim for 20 years regardless of shitty graphics because of the immersive nature of its gameplay. DCS is totally lacking in this area, for me anyway so if my VR totally sucks I’m out of here. I get it that others focus more on the visuals of DCS for their enjoyment and that VR is a far cry from from a 144hz 4KUHD monitor. Who knows when we’ll see that kind of quality. There would have to be a major overhaul to the core engine in DCS for that to happen and ED doesn’t seem interested in doing it as it would not bring in any cash. That is unless they make another new DCS world branch and sell it. If it accepted all previous modules I would buy it. Until then VR is what it is but for me it’s been enough to keep me interested, especially now that the Viper MFD’s have been fixed with a mod.
  4. I just went back through some of my older screen shots which truly look like shit. One thing that will effect the quality is how close you are to the object you're looking at. If I'm leaning back the SS's looks terrible. The screens I posted were to show that both the cockpit and outside objects are easily discerned. If you're seeing a worse image outside the cockpit and the object is within a mile somethings out of whack. Object outside at that range should be as easy to identify as the SS. These screens were in response to Mr. Big Bigg's post.
  5. I haven't noticed any frame drops with my Index resulting from using L16 and HSD. I had this problem with the Hornet at one time but fortunately so far L16 hasn't been an issue in the Viper. Is it possible it's a HMD specific issue or is this happening on a monitor?
  6. Neither of those pics are external screen grabs. Note the cockpit switches. They are what I saw while in the cockpit and I specifically did not select external pics. If you look at the edges you'll see the pixelation which does still appear the farther your eyes get from the object you're looking at. These screenshots are accurate representations of what I saw through my Index last night. As I get closer to an object it becomes CRYSTAL clear. I agree everyone sees VR differently but if we're using the same HMD and somewhat similar systems we should be seeing somewhat similar results. If you have a less powerful system you wont be able to run my settings for instance but it should damn well be better than a CV1. If it isn't, something is off and more than likely can be fixed. If you're done jacking with it roger that; life is too short to be frustrated by what is supposed to be entertainment. Edit With my current settings (used last night with the above screen shots) I stay between 45 and 90FPS in the air and sometimes drop below 45 while on the ground depending on the activity in the server. Currently I'm setting Custom Resolution in SteamVR/Settings/Video to 194%. Everything else is at 100%. You will probably have to go lower if your system is less powerful than mine. I also use SteamVR beta and we've had at least 2 firmware updates in the last 2 weeks.
  7. Where in this long ass thread has anyone ever said that VR looks like a monitor? If you don’t like VR and have no intention of trying to improve image quality and performance of your current setup why are you still here? Isn’t there a TrackIR/Monitor thread you can hang out on? Improving both the performance and image quality of the Index for those of us that own it is the purpose of this thread now. No one is selling anything and in fact we're all in agreement VR is a far cry from the Nirvana we thought it would be. Therefore, if you don't have anything to contribute other than we're a bunch of fanboi's you're just a troll....
  8. Here’s another...
  9. This is a screen shot from tonight and represents exactly what I see in the Index while tanking with two of my squad mates.. actually the index looks better than this pic lol.
  10. You and I are running pretty much the same system specs. I do not have any problem seeing my wingmen at all. There is something off about your setup if the cockpit looks fine but outside looks like ass. Also your issue with frame rates online is actually common especially on large servers like TTI and Hoggit. You guys have seen me rant on here and I was within a day of ditching DCS before I found the MFD fix for the Viper. Had I not gotten that mod I was done with DCS and since it’s the only thing I do with my Index, it was going too. Things have gotten better in the last week including the server missions my wing flies. Let me also state that I only fly online. I have no interest in the canned linear single player missions DCS offers other than training missions like AAR. I flew the other Viper sim for 20 years and have infinitely higher standards for gameplay in a combat flight simulator. Our servers typical frame rates for me are a locked 45 FPS having slight dips while on the ground. Here’s my offer to you guys that are about to ditch DCS and the iIndex. Come get on my Wing’s discord channel for recruits which will allow us to work through your settings in real time on a server I know runs butter smooth on my rig. Some of our guys may be on but we can talk to them on SRS and they do not shoot friendlies. There is no reason why your systems should not run as well as mine. I fly practically every night for a few hours at least and am on Central Standard Time or GMT -6. If your interested send me a PM, our servers are all VCVW-6 and show up in the server list. The one that is up right now is the Clearfiield Mission which is the Caucasus version of Snowfox. Once we set a time I’ll PM the password for the server. We also have our own SRS as well. I will also need your Discord call sign to send an invite. While I can’t guarantee you awesome frame rates on the TTI servers I can guarantee I’ll figure out why your performance is shitty and hopefully fix it. You’ll also get much better frame rates on a server that is dialed in.
  11. Dogfight mode is not working correctly but is known and acknowledged as WIP. When in dogfight mode the AN-APG68 will lock up the first thing it sees within 10 miles, including friendlies. For now, when i to use it, I’ll TMS up once DF is selected which puts the radar in boresoght from the default 30/20, point at the contact for about 2 seconds and then TMS down once. This will usually lock the target within a second and a half. If you have visual tally (inside 10 miles) it should work. The above method is a hack/workaround and should not be used once it is working correctly.
  12. The above is the third hybrid way I mentioned and like Nagilem I use this method as well. I tend to use the 148% CR / 138% DCS Application SS or 204% CR only and everything else at 100% depending on SteamVR beta and DCS updates and their effects.
  13. Agree with Svsmokey but I've found anything lower than 70 and they will grow in front of you.
  14. When you're using SteamVR Settings Video Custom Resolution set to anything higher than 150%, leave your in game Pixel Density at 1.0. If you want to instead use in game Pixel Density for super sampling you need to set SteamVR and all other settings in SteamVR to 100%. Then you can use the in game Pixel Density and set it as high as your system can handle it. It's basically one or the other. In that other thread I explain a third hybrid way to set it up as well.
  15. Without doubt Oculus has the best driver/interface for use in DCS and it is native to the sim. That said, having used both, Oculus with CV1 and SteamVR with Index, SteamVR is getting better and better. Performance has improved over the 6 or so months I've had the Index and they actually pay attention to user feedback in the beta program to the point we'll be talking about a feature here and the next day it appears in a new beta. Had Oculus kept a mechanical IPD I might still be using their gear now but then again I might not. I cannot stand the halo style mount and the S in general is a step down from the CV1 materially in my opinion. However it IS priced to reflect this so can't really complain. Plus, the S is the vehicle that will bring in many new VR users which is good for all of us.
  16. With the mod, the clarity is almost perfect. I’ve stopped bitching lol. It seams an effect called LCD is what has dulled them. That’s all that is turned off.
  17. I’m the opposite of you with an IPD of 58. The Index is my only option. For DCS you do not need controllers but I do recommend 2 base stations. You can get away with 1 but may lose tracking when checking 6. For Index and 2 base stations it’s $800 unfortunately.
  18. This is a very short thread but I give initial settings to use with the Index including my own. Oh yeah, welcome to club of VR and the Index! https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=257532
  19. Roger that. If I could get the Reverb to work with my eyes I may have made the same decision. Although, not having to deal with the WMR nightmare is a blessing lol.
  20. I would adjust gamma from 1.5 - 1.7 if it’s washed out. Especially in the Viper. Don’t know what to tell you on the FPS monitor in VR. It should be RCTRL Pause/break. MSAA kills all spotting at distance whether on the ground or in the air. When shrinking down the image it loses contrast making the object blend in with the surroundings.
  21. Wow! Are you sticking with the Reverb?
  22. Question 1 is multi-faceted. Since you’re able to see the Applications tab and Video tab I going to assume you’re running SteamVR stable which is fine. The beta has made multiple changes to the Settings interface and it’s a bit harder to navigate. That said, the Applications tab allows you to customize a specific VR program like DCS without effecting any other program. Therefore you should treat it like Custom Resolution under the Video tab and Pixel Density in DCS. All three do the same thing, though the results can be different visually depending on your rig and headset. Another thing to note is that all three of the above AND MSAA are forms of Super Sampling. SS renders a much larger frame than necessary which it then shrinks down to get rid of screen door effect and aliasing. So, if you have custom resolution set to 188%, leave DCS application setting and Pixel Density to 100% and 1.0. Here’s where it gets somewhat tricky. You can combine 2 of the above methods so that the total equals somewhere around 204% or 188%. These two numbers represent a close approximation the actual pixel count in the Index and the Reverb so I use them for simplicity’s sake. For instance, with certain SteamVR betas I would set custom resolution to 148% and DCS application SS to 138% which gets me in the neighborhood of 200% and looked best on my index. Currently I’m back to 204% and it’s running well and looking good on heavy online servers. The original settings I gave you were to get you in the air as quickly as possible with a good image and good performance. Now that you have a good baseline you can experiment. While each method of super sampling above accomplishes the same goal they do it in slightly different ways. Different rigs and headsets respond better or worse to these methods and only by experimenting can you find which is best for you. One last caveat. MSAA is supersampling as well but for whatever reason it can compliment the three others instead of multiplying provided your other super sampling settings leave you enough overhead to not kill your FPS. Lastly, MSAA WILL kill your ability to spot targets at distance. ALWAYS enable motion smoothing in the Video Tab but leave it at Global setting in DCS application settings Enable advanced super sampling. Disable GPU Profiling Check the box for “do not fade to grid. The rest are personal preference.
  23. Miles, my number has come up and I’ve sent several emails as instructed but have received no reply. I sent the emails to orders@pointctrl.com. Is this correct? Thanks!
  24. In Nvidia control panel for now just set prefer maximum performance for power setting and pre-rendered VR frames to 3. Pixel Density pretty much does the same thing as SteamVR custom resolution so it’s easiest to use one or the other. If you use both they multiply the effect. I use SteamVR Custom resolution at 204% and pixel density at 1.0 in DCS. MSAA also has a similar effect but can be combined @ 2x if your system can push it. If you do use MSAA I would set Custom Resolution to 188%. MSAA smooths out the aliasing but will lower your FPS. You can also set Custom Resolution to 100% and then move Pixel Density to 1.4 - 1.6 depending on your FPS performance. I don’t have a Vive Pro so if these start values are dragging down FPS, lower them until you find a balance.
