Nice, and there is plenty of yaw as well as p-factor in the ww2 prop ships. I need to check the noob settings, but even then it's "woo doggies!" at low speed, high g and bank angle, scissoring and trying to land hits. Those big blades throw you around a lot! The Sabre is pretty nasty at the limit too as a swept wing jet without p-factor.

And another interesting effect while we wait... I noticed a MiG-15 actually do a rapid flip flop back and forth many times at the apex of it's zoom climb maneuver while I stalled out below him. The airframe flip flopped, front to back, about it's CG in an obvious glitch. This may be a result of some of my tweaks, maybe not. I also got the game to crash a couple times either with thrust mismatch errors in the .lua lines or corrupted mission file edits with skill levels or loudouts, or just a corrupted save. It crashed on the build routine before going into 3D. Deleted the mission and loaded a different one, worked fine.

Yeah the MiG-15 is a leading offender in this regard. Looking at the SFM, it has a combined (max) lift coefficient of 1.12 or some skank in the matrix, when Mach number = 0. Or it generates lift at 0 airspeed. My brother at NASA confirmed that is impossible. So it may be required to keep the SFM from choking but man, knock it down to 0.009 or something. Give us a break!

Air to Air gunnery advice AGAIN...circa August2021
Squiffy replied to timdickson's topic in DCS: F-86F Sabre
Well after a couple frustrating days of dogfighting and editing, I am back to a workable mod state. My DCS beta version is 2.7... something. I do not get prompted to update it when I launch now, but when I went to clear out some freebie module notifications like the AV-8B, it looked like it tried to update. I stopped it. I think it was going to 2.9 or later. The new effects are cool. The jaggy cloud box is not too bad but I am getting hangs at times. Sometimes they clear others not. So I turned down my settings and shut off some other apps. I am pretty sure the Ai modelling has changed. The 15s are a lot better at fighting in the vertical and I think I had to restore my edits at some point. Not sure what kinda sneaky stuff is going on but I did update a few months ago when I was using the Raptor, Su-57 and J-11 mods. I backed up my Korean .lua mods but who knows? And I notice a funny effect where setting Ai to Rookie. It can mean 3 things... it high tails and runs making for boring pursuits, or it fights like an Ace with perfect zoom climbs, even when shot up, only to fold a wing and auger in without landing another round on him because the once ace pilot who's supposed to be a rookie turned into a dunce. So I am still able to mod and play in the Beta but I am pretty sure I am a few versions old at this point. The Sabre seemed fail happy too with frequent gun jams, unstarts and power output sags like dropping to 70% randomly at full throttle and requiring a restart. The Sabre is so nerfed anyway, who thought it needed any more 'breakage?" Gunfreak, did you find the Mig, Sabre and weapons .lua files? -

A couple things while I'm at work... shell.lua is in the scripts/database/weapons folder You want to find a open source editor that can handle .lua files without corrupting them. I have one called note gecko or something I can loo for that too. [The app is Notepad++] DCS will check your folders during compatibility tests so it's good to have a backup of your originals. I normally add a suffix to my file names to make them different. Like SQ for Squiffy. There was some back and forth last year about .luas with ED. They re-allowed editing and substituting so long as you were not using them online. I have not heard if this was eliminated since. -

Sorry Gunfreak, been away a while. And I had to rebuild my joystick maps too! You want to edit the shell.lua in the scripts/database folders. Also, in the F86.lua, edit the barell warp main numbers down to near 1.0 or 2.0 to get a more realistic grouping. Your barrels have ice cold cooling at angels 20 and 300 kts. -

Crank your seat position (camera) as far up as you can to see over the nose, and then use your tracers. The pipper is a good estimate but once you can see the hits from your tracers you will be in good shape. Fight in the vertical but don't commit to a full follow climb. Peel off, or climb more slowly below the bandit and keep him above your canopy rail. Wait till he turns back down, and then cut him off and hose him. Follow him down, pop your speed brakes and get more hits. After a couple loops like this you should be able to splash him pretty consistently. If you crank your muzzle velocity up even higher in the shell.lua, you can cut through them like a laser. -

Just a rant, but notice which fighter is effected and in what way. In the one precise way that air superiority was achieved in the last of the gunfighters, with high speed jet envelopes and ballistics, or the lack thereof. All the while the MiG has Sputnik like thrust and "lift" at Mach = 0.0 in the SFM. "Put that sucker in a 4G turn and keep it there. I'm on my way." -
Wow that was helpful thanks. I will stay with the aircraft and NOT declare an emergency.
-
Yes, and it may just be that the new clouds option is causing the low light reflection of the projector to overwhelm the horizon outside the cockpit.
-
Is it just me or did the Sabre gunsight get dirty in recent updates? Or is it the clouds? I think not because when I flew the overhead and taxied back after landing I really noticed no difference, other than the fact that lining up on final approach was annoying, because the airfield was somehow offended at my historical kill ratio and decided to make my gunsight greasy and dirty. I think this was true throughout the whole mission. All this while the pipper, muzzle velocity, and barrel warp are still out of whack. Really? You have time for silly graphics that are actually annoying but can't fix a simple. lua issue? Yeah, I know I'm ranting, but talk me down from this one. I am ready to jump out of a perfectly good airplane Kiss my 38th parallel haha. Before...

Yes, it may just be that the "barrel warp" equation is worse than the lack of velocity. Some luas model the barrel effect with a circular dispersal. It's much easier to adjust it that way. Like on the Spitfire for example (and the Browning .303). The barrel warp is exactly the same between the MiG and the Sabre and we've been told the Sabre was based on the MiG so that it is somehow less objectionable. But the effect is way out of whack with nature as can be seen in gun camera footage and sighting photos from gunnery ranges with almost laser-like tracer paths on long exposure photos. I busted the warp equations down my like 75%. But another tweak which has served me well offline, is to adjust the max g rating on the MiG by 0.5 to 0.3 increments to simulate average g technique in the pilots without g suits. That really effects how much lead they can pull and how hard they can turn, and this helps bring the muzzle velocity aspect back into a more real world appearance. Also adjust your seat about as high as it will go to see down over the nose and "rope a dope" with tracers, pipper be damned. The module was made by a third party so I am sure getting things changed is a "boring" and "old hat" task for developers who have moved onto new and exciting things. I have never really played online and don't play much at all lately. I bought the F-16 and Spit IX lately but didn't fly them much probably because my old HOTAS Cougar is really worn and spikey.

Cloud bugs - strange pattern, LOD edges
Squiffy replied to SirJ's topic in Weather System Bugs & Problems
But you know, the notes don't really address the "skybox" issue and edge dithering, not on the horizon, not VR. Maybe these points were meant to be more broad? Known Issues Users may see some vertical ‘jittering’ when looking at distant clouds - This is more visible in VR and we are working to resolve it as a priority. There are Anti-aliasing artefacts visible under some conditions when clouds are low on the horizon. The lighting effects on the clouds, especially when the sun is low on the horizon is still very much a WIP, and will be improved. Currently as part of the initial release, clouds do not affect LOS for the AI. The legacy fog effects are not suitable for use with the new clouds - a new fog layer using the new technology will follow. Thunderstorms and lightning effects will follow in future updates. Using SLAM/AGM-65E alongside targeting pod can in some circumstances result in some ground units becoming semi-transparent to the targeting pod. This is currently a priority item to resolve. We have greatly improved many of the visual effects, and some tuning of brightness still remains to be completed. Night vision goggles do not provide sufficient illumination with no moonlight. Dedicated server window can hang when minimised. MP. Ping info missing (always zero) in player's list. -

Too "glassy" and reflective water.
Squiffy replied to Skysurfer's topic in Weather System Bugs & Problems
I would add that it's not just reflectiveness and waviness but the SCALE of those waves. This has been an issue in sea rendering and special effects for decades. The old film Bridges at Toko-Ri and others with model ships on water (live action) suffer the same problem. I would suggest increasing the scale of the waves (smaller) so they match the terrain and adding more blend and dithering LODs to eliminate any "crisp glassy massively out of scale" waves from distracting from the scene. The last update is very promising and I have to try adjusting my settings to get rid of the new LOD box edges in the volumetric clouds. The screenie with the F-18s is a problem because the swells are out of scale with the terrain. Also the dry land is virtually featureless without the trees. This makes the scale problem easier to see. And are they swells or ripples? That's part of the problem. -

Thanks just saw this today after the update. Really pronounced when viewing dogfights or target lock view externally. You can see the rectangular box in all the strange clipped edges on the clouds, matched to the aircraft/camera center point. So much so you can see gaps in the clouds with sky showing through. I'll grab a screenshot. -
resolved Aileron behavior and effectiveness
Squiffy replied to Reflected's topic in Bugs and Problems
If this gets fixed, more MiGs will be splashed. For some that's a problem, for others, not. ED please remember, the MiG-21 was (is) pretty awesome. Don't sweat the small stuff and just fix the Sabre. -
There are several known issues regarding the MiG and Sabre as indicated above. If you can do a little editing of the .lua files, you can practice more offline with a little more noob friendly settings, flight models, bullet, and gun dynamics. There are more threads here on the topic as well and I made a few posts of my MiG SFM edits that helped a lot. G limits, gun, and bullet edits make for a much more satisfying experience. As far as spotting goes, don't sweat using padlock especially if you don't have a VR cockpit or goggles. Remember, the DCS modules, as published are not perfect, so you don't have to be either. Muzzle velocity, g effects, transonic aerodynamics, and tactics are massive topics in play here that just aren't modeled clearly enough to feel guilty about what edits you may make. Seriously though, check my sig line and you will see perhaps the most important thing Sabre pilots thought of in actual combat over MiG alley. It is not accurately modeled in this sim. Col. "Boots" Blesse is my source. Hehe, sig lines aren't visible anymore? ... "Put that sucker in a 4G turn and keep it there. I'm on my way!" The MiG could not pull enough lead to hit you with it's canon in that configuration...period. It's called physics.

resolved Aileron behavior and effectiveness
Squiffy replied to Reflected's topic in Bugs and Problems
Yes, while great info, the business about feel and hydraulics is irrelevant. The problem is in the departure from history in the known, superior roll rate and high speed performance of the Sabre v, MiG. It's not an earth shattering problem. It's off by enough that many users have noticed it. If a few more MiG's get splashed as a result of a fix, too bad. -

Here's a little "Launch and Leave" comment. The Sabre was nerfed for subconscious reasons. The 10:1 kill ratio was disturbing for some coders and had to be dealt with in any way possible. Haha, just kidding. Happy New Year everybody! -
Thanks NineLine. A tip for practicing... edit the Mig-15bis.lua as well and change the max g limit to about 4 to 6 g's and limit the max bank angle to 70-80.' This will curb their aerobatic ability and make it a bit more realistic for a non g suit aircraft with non flying tail and thick wings. They still climb like Sputnik but if you yo yo out or hammerhead in the vertical and keep your nose below his, you can follow them through the vertical and close in a dive. Let them go higher and keep your speed usable. Wait for them to come back down.
