Good points from ARM505, very true but its just something we have to deal with. :) Aura, can you tell us more about your control setup please, and if you have completed the taxi training missions etc? That way we can help you better. If you have rudder pedals with toe brakes, set left and right accordingly in the 'Axis commands' control setup and invert the axis for each in DCS by picking 'Axis tune' . Very important. You may also want to assign something handy on a hotas for 'wheel brake' using both wheel brakes at a time (can be difficult to do with precision using both toe brakes simultaneously...unless you are a perfectly balanced Ninja lol :)) Now you will be able to use differential braking (and be able to brake with one wheel brake at a time to initiate a turn). It is important to keep the control stick aft (towards you) of centre as this engages a partial lock of the tail wheel and will stop you going round in circles (anything forward of centre will unlock the tail wheel completely....useful sometimes if you need to make a large turn). I keep manifold pressure generally between 15-20 (from memory) when taxing straight depending of fuel loadout etc, applying brakes when building up too much speed; the trick is to use small bursts of throttle power and applying around 50% rudder deflection or more using left or right brakes when turning (which will obviously slow you down) ,then immediately throttling back quickly. Add a short burst of power again when needed, you will get into a throttle rhythm of 'to and fro'. This momentum will allow you to make turns, without going too fast.....and unfortunately the only way to get the knack and to judge your momentum well is to practice, practice, practice. :joystick: Unlocking the tail wheel completely (stick forward of centre) I'd say is not generally advised at first unless you absolutely need to. If you do, make sure you are sufficiently slow or it will not end well. Use differential braking in desired direction of turn and counter in opposite direction to stop the turn. Again, needs practice. It is useful to watch the ground or objects as a reference point for how fast you are going, very easy to misjudge in a sim. You are right, it is tricky.....took me about 40 minutes or so to get the hang of it....but pretty soon 'the penny will drop' and you will wonder what all the fuss was about. Other tips are to use external view when stationary before taxing for an unfamiliar airfield so you can plan your rout......and use the 'S' pattern to align yourself on the taxi centre line properly, and also to see what's ahead of you when required. IRL you'd also have 'ground peeps' helping you out, not so here. :) At the risk of sounding like one of those dodgy US 'motivational' scam lord speakers with their headsets and 'microphones of truth', you also need to change 'screw it' to I CAN DO IT. :D Unleash your 'Inner Power Panda'. Feed him. Only then will you hear your Inner Power Panda roar. :megalol: Then the taxi force will be 'strong in this one'. Eventually. :D

additional FW190 instant action mission?here you go!

Thanks a bunch David, I'll give this a go. :) -
Have to agree Lefty (I do not use HDR either), it is absolutely debilitating at times when searching for Radar-IRST contacts on HUD, you are effectively blind and whilst changing HUD colour from default can help slightly, this is also obviously unrealistic as it cannot be done in real life (I will not change it personally) and needs to be addressed.

One can only imagine the outrage and furore that would ensue if an ED 'Whistle-blower' revealed that donations to the 'ED Development-Charity fund' were in fact being surreptitiously siphoned off to buy all their staff gold plated toilet brushes, hand made rudder optimised cashmere 'Combat Slippers', and remote controlled diamond encrusted robotic dogs to fetch their morning newspapers. Oooh, the scandal! What? Trust no one. Stranger things have happened. :D

Yes it is Dudester (the first AFM overall) and its great fun to 'fly'. :) -
Advanced Flight Model - (AFM). What actually is it?
Biggles07 replied to MadTommy's topic in DCS World 1.x (read only)
Hiya Eagle, valid points, rgr and understood. :) Obviously speaking for myself only, I would absolutely prefer as a customer to have the ED-DCS definition of their 'AFM' as a basic standard, and for a clear distinction to be made otherwise; the term 'EFM' would do just fine. :) Semantics really but important in my opinion for the reasons outlined above and in terms of 'quality control'. For my part I feel that having a baseline standard using a set definition for the description 'AFM' is profoundly important.....and to think of it as being 'restrictive' is perhaps a matter of perspective, I would take the viewpoint that these conditions and criteria should be satisfied as a bare minimum in order to be described* as such.....and still feel that any FM that does not include these core constituent elements and is described as 'AFM' (as I dare say most would expect and understand as being in DCS) would IMO have the potential to be misleading. Just an opinion like any other, but there you go. :) Any improvements upon this baseline and additions by 3rd parties such as yourself are of course most welcome! I wish you the best of luck in your development endeavours too Eagle, keep at it and its great from a sim fan viewpoint to see people creating new stuff. Its all good. -
Advanced Flight Model - (AFM). What actually is it?
Biggles07 replied to MadTommy's topic in DCS World 1.x (read only)
Hello CptSmiley. :) I have to disagree vehemently that the term-acronym AFM as coined by the ED-DCS developers themselves means 'whatever you want it to be', on the grounds that a baseline definition of its core constituent elements (and precisely how it differs from 'SFM') has been provided by the developers themselves in my previous post. :) Being a flight modeller yourself, you'll know that the laws of physics are not arbitrary, debatable, or "whatever you want them to be" either. :D I'd like to point out that no 'opinion' or 'impression' of mine personally was offered regarding what the term advanced flight model pertaining to DCS actually means, but rather a concise explanation of it quoted verbatim from the developers themselves. :) I'm therefore slightly bemused as to how you can suggest that the definition of such as provided by the creators of said 'DCS-AFM' themselves can somehow be 'incorrect' lol.....maybe take up the issue with them by PM (jk). :) It may well be that your vision of what constitutes an 'advanced flight model' may differ, but with the greatest of respect this does not matter and is irrelevant for the purpose of this discussion. The OP asked for a definition of what the term-acronym 'AFM' means in DCS and how it is distinct from their own 'SFM' and this was provided. :) It is of great importance that the term AFM is given a clear and at least baseline definition for the simple reason that in the absence of such, it becomes as you wrote an arbitrary, nebulous term and "whatever you want it to be". The practical consequence of which would be that any third party developing for DCS could claim an aircraft implements DCS 'AFM', but if any of the aforementioned AFM criterion were not satisfied or missing, this would not strictly be true. This would be a misrepresentation, and misleading and unfair to the paying customer. I take your point on board that individuals may go their own way regarding coding etc of said AFM, and I am not arguing that DCS AFM is the 'Alpha and Omega' or Holy Grail of all FM philosophies, but I'd strenuously argue that these baseline criterion as defined by DCS themselves in the previous post should be satisfied before anyone can claim an aircraft implements AFM as defined previously (I understand they are farming out the tools to do so to select 3rd parties). This is not to say that it is 'set in stone' and that evolution of AFM cannot (and probably will-already has) take place over time by either DCS themselves or some Genius 3rd party, but rather that it establishes at least a baseline standard; giving the consumer a clear reference regarding definition, and consequently peace of mind. :) BTW, I should point out that what I know about flight modelling and physics could probably be written on the back of a postage stamp :D, I am most definitely no expert on these matters, but I thought I would quote those who matter in terms of defining the DCS term-acronym AFM, (the developers) and who are. Cheers. :) -
Advanced Flight Model - (AFM). What actually is it?
Biggles07 replied to MadTommy's topic in DCS World 1.x (read only)
This should cover it mate. :) Aircraft dynamics are calculated on the basis of the same physics equations describing translational and rotational motion of a solid body under the influence of external forces and moments, disregarding the nature of their origin. Trajectory and angle movements look more natural due to correct modeling of the aircraft’s inertial properties. Transitions between the flight modes in a smooth manner without abrupt changes of angle rotational speeds and attitude (for example: after a tail-slide or when landing with an angle of roll on one landing wheel). Gyroscopic effect with the aircraft’s rotation taken into account. The asymmetric effect of external forces is taken into account, along with the effect of external forces not going through the center-of-gravity (for example: engine thrust, drag chute forces). These forces are correctly modeled at any flight mode and cause an adequate rotary moment. The center-of-gravity can change its location within the speed axis system. The modeling of lateral and longitudinal center of mass has been introduced. This can change depending on fuel load and weapon loads. The asymmetrical loading of weapon and fuel pylons, which influence the characteristics of lateral control (depending on flight speed, regular overload, etc), is also modeled. When calculating aerodynamic characteristics, the aircraft is represented as a combination of airframe components (fuselage, outer wing panel, stabilizer, etc). Separate calculations for the aerodynamic performance of each of these components are performed. This is done over the entire range of local angles of attack and slip (including supercritical), local dynamic pressure and Mach number. This takes into consideration the change and level of destruction of control surfaces and various airframe components. Aerodynamics are accurately modeled in the entire range of angles of attack and glide. The efficiency of lateral control, and degree of lateral and static lateral stability, now depend on the angle of attack, longitudinal and lateral center-of-gravity. The wing autorotation effect when performing a rolling rotation at high angles of attack is modeled. Kinematic, aerodynamic and inertial interaction of longitudinal, dihedral and lateral channels (yaw movement when performing a rolling turn, rolling motion at rudder pedal forward, etc). Angle of glide availability is determined by the pilot’s efforts and the plane’s position. Possibly the most important distinction between SFM and AFM is this......"When calculating aerodynamic characteristics, the aircraft is represented as a combination of airframe components (fuselage, outer wing panel, stabilizer, etc). Separate calculations for the aerodynamic performance of each of these components are performed." When I win the Euromillions lottery (it would probably help if I actually bought a ticket lol) I'm going to bribe An.Petrovich and his flight model posse with a ridiculous amount of money to work on an AFM for Razbams Harrier. If he nobly decides that he cannot be bought then I will have no alternative but to hire a squad of elite ex-Spetsnaz mercenaries to kidnap him and force him to work on a Harrier AFM whether he wants to or not. He will not be harmed in any way. Chocolate digestive Biscuits and vodka will be provided, I'll even fit out his temporary dungeon with a surround sound cinema complex to make his stay as a prisoner a little happier. This way progress will be achieved. This way the Harrier will excel, and be all that it can be. This will come to pass, and eventually you will all realise that "Biggles was a wise man" ; although his methods may have seemed a bit extreme, it was all for the best.....and the greater Utilitarian good. *Falls off chair laughing* :D -
Obviously speaking only for myself, I bought FC3 for the sole reason that regarding fast movers it was better than what we had in DCS World, IE nothing, and thus better than nothing. :) I pre ordered it instantly as it became available as a leap of faith and to support ED. I most definitely did not buy it because it was what my sim heart desires, which is high fidelity stuff....but rather hoped the funding would be a means to that end. This is pure speculation but I strongly suspect that many others did the same. Not that I'm in any way a 'sim-snob' though and I struggle to understand that attitude lol, blasting around with the FC3 aircraft can be great fun too....and though personally I want a little more....each to their own. End of day, having fun is what its all about, aye? :) That said, some excellent points raised by GG which I broadly agree with, and economic reality does indeed bite. It seems they must do this as an economic imperative; the market ultimately dictates everything, and if that's the way it is, then that's the way it is. Pointless moaning about it. :) I am at heart an optimist, so while on one hand I am slightly disappointed we won't be getting high fidelity Flanker-F15C goodness as soon as I would have liked, my spirits are buoyed by the fact that we will get there eventually. Patience is a virtue......and in the meantime I suppose tooling about with the new AFM's will be interesting and make the wait for the 'full monty' a lot more bearable. Beczl's Bis can't be too far away either, and I like the Hornet.....true multi role fun and hopefully we will see enhanced carrier ops eventually too. Its all good to me.....exciting times ahead and I can't think of a better time to be a simmer.

I do not like 6DOF cockpit, I can re-use old 2D cockpit?
Biggles07 replied to hx5791's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
Thanks Pyro, I meant to ask whether others were experiencing it too....useful info. :) Just to be clear and repeat myself it is the new 6DOF Flanker pit instrument lights that cause the problem. I have already tried a DCS world repair but this does not solve the problem. Any chance of seeing your specs please? It would be great if any others who experience big FPS loss when pressing 'L' for instrument lights in the Flanker could chime in to confirm too. :) EDIT: Just saw your post Hx, thanks. :) -

Biggles07 replied to hx5791's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
Yes airport clutter is a drag, but I have to respectfully disagree that 'the Pitts are well optimised for what you get', mate at least at present regarding the new SU-27 Pit when turning on instrument lights. :) A massive 25-30 FPS loss on the deck occurs on my rig (Sabretooth Z77, i7 3770K, GTX580, Samsung 840 Pro Series SSD, 8gb Corsair Platinum @2133, Driver Version WHQL 314.22)....which I'm not sure is a sign of good optimisation (as of now) hehe. Same situation with the new hotfix released yesterday. They will sort it out I'm sure, just a bit of a PITA in the meantime as I like night time and dusk-first light type sorties. :) I also have massive FPS loss in the Stang pit when grounded and engine is cranked up and started....for whatever reason. Maybe it is something to do with prop animation or whatever, no idea but things are fine when engine is off. Cheers. :) -
Here you go, 'General questions' in the bugs and problems section....Couple of threads I've just seen. :) http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=105077 http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=105056

No worries man.....:) I often need a good cuppa to become a fully functioning human being again after a kip too lol....Understood. :D

Okey dokey Stang and beg yer pardon. :) I haven't had time to look in the other bugs sections etc yet and was not aware of this. Haven't seen an invincible AI post yet, but that's because tbh I probably wasn't looking very hard. :D

Lujiashun, is this happening in the FC3 'Instant action' missions like SU-27 Intercept and Mig CAP? If so I can confirm and have a few tracks of both R-27ER and R-73 Archer SRM's hitting enemy aircraft and no damage ensuing (hits confirmed by both track and Tacview). Occasionaly bizarre R-77 Adder behaviour has been noted too, veering off very close to impact point for no apparent reason. I'll try to set up some Mission editor skirmishes when I get some time to determine whether it is occurring solely in the FC3 'Instant action' missions. The missiles are still most definitely WIP as pointed out many times, so I'm not moaning lol and I understand that these things are probably fiendishly tricky to get right with the new AFM characteristics. I was however amazed to see that FC3 'beta' designation in the DCS GUI has been removed.....which seems a bit dodgy? :) If someone can tell me how to upload tracks (and where they can be found in the DCS folder) to this forum I will do so. I think I have an old 'Mediafire' account where I might be able to upload it to. One in particular shows 3 SRM (R-73 Archer) hits on one F-5E aircraft, no damage whatsoever, and its quite amusing. :) In exasperation I just decided to brass him up with the gun instead. Get some! :D Disappointed that EOS scan elevation has not been sorted yet too, (its 'quite a big deal' for Reds tactically), but Rome wasn't built in a day and I'm sure they'll nail it soon. :) Lots of positives about the new update though (love the new Flanker Pit and new sounds too.....das ist gut. :) I seem to get a massive FPS loss in the P-51 D cockpit when looking forwards for whatever reason, and .50cal guns particularly at dusk still cause big FPS loss too. Smoke pillar FPS loss has largely been eliminated however.

Or Vanessa Feltz. Much the same thing. :D

:megalol: LMAO :clap_2:......Awwww, such a nice thought. But they are not your friends. These murderously feckless fiends have only destruction and wanton mayhem on their minds! :D

British missiles are cool lol. :) Some more info here on the different launch modes. http://www.raf.mod.uk/equipment/alarm.cfm In Area Suppression mode the missile can be fired in the direction of radars whose positions are unknown and it will engage the highest priority target for attack. In Direct mode the missile is pre-programmed with threat radars and executes a box-search for them after launch, homing onto the highest priority target. The missile can be pre-loaded with a prioritised file of hostile radars, for which it will search after launch. Some Tornado F3s were modified to carry ALARMs for operations over Iraq during 2003. I'd love to see Brimstone modelled at some point in the future too.

RIP Jim, I never knew the bloke personally but I most definitely knew of him and he played a massive part in making the hobby we all love so much what it is today with his passion, commitment and drive;......a Legend for sure and by all accounts a good man and thoroughly decent human being. Our revels now are ended. These our actors, As I foretold you, were all spirits, and Are melted into air, into thin air: And like the baseless fabric of this vision, The cloud-capp'd tow'rs, the gorgeous palaces, The solemn temples, the great globe itself, Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve, And, like this insubstantial pageant faded, Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff As dreams are made on; and our little life Is rounded with a sleep. S!

Massive FPS loss with two monitor setup DCS 1.2.3.9871
Biggles07 replied to Biggles07's topic in DCS World 1.x (read only)
No BRooDJeRo, one monitor is fine (slightly less FPS than normal, though not catastrophic like with two monitors). EDIT: It doesn't matter chaps, I've sorted it by removing the Lua scripts I had wrote, then doing a 'DCS World Repair', and putting in new rewritten Lua scripts again. Don't know why this is so, but it works. Fixed! Happy days, great FPS again, and much ado about nothing hehe. Thanks for trying to help anyway Brood, much appreciated. :) -
Greets all. This is not a 'Moaner Lisa' type post, more to find out if others are experiencing the same, and how to rectify it if possible. It may just be a simple thing after all. Ok, I have a two monitor setup, with my pit on a 1920x1200 Samsung Syncmaster T240, and Left MFCD for A-10C on a 1280x1024 monitor to its left. The previous Lua script I made for this setup is intact and works fine, res and aspect ratio included. The 'options' settings within game are exactly the same as previous when working fine (no full screen etc, as well as all graphics settings the same). However, while it works.....I have a massive FPS drop down to 20-21, when using a 'control' mission I made myself to test FPS, It was previously 45+ even using TGP (which I what I set it up for). The strange thing however is that no matter what is being used on second monitor, the FPS is tied to around 20-21, whether its simply the F-15C radar screen, or the Hog TGP with a lot of action going on. It was previously far higher, and I don't know why it is so low, choppy and crap now? Hopefully there is a way to fix it, and I'd appreciate any help. If this is 'the way it is' now I'll be very dismayed, as I upgraded my puter for the sole reason of getting good FPS with TGP on the left monitor, which I had....and was happy as larry. I have tried 'Repair DCS World', to no avail. Not sure if important, but prior to this patch I would have to click left mouse button once at the start of a mission to remove the windows task bar at the bottom of left screen, bit of an inconvenience but didn't mind it. Now there is no need to do this, but the FPS are awful. Specs are 3770K Sabretooth Z77 8gb Corsair Platinum 2133mhz GTX 580 Samsung 840 Pro Series 256gb SSD Latest WHQL Nvidia drivers. Any Ideas? Thanks kindly.

Just wanted to add that I freaking LOVE the new TWS2 mode for Mig, works a charm and the symbology is cool.....A diamond for PDT and cross for secondary. HUD all round is better, though I can't seem to get EOS scan elevation to work properly as previously reported? Correct axis is definitely assigned. May be my fault/user error though, been a while since I played this. Archer R-73 SRM lethality at optimum range and pursuit course is increased dramatically, assume the same with Sidewinders though haven't tried them yet. Having tried many high G-off boresight launches yet though. Loving it, thank you!
