Well, if they had just done SH4 + the "immersive" stuff in the sub, that could have been cool. Sadly they didn't do that. Instead they gave us a sim where getting even basic things to work (like the sub not auto-sinking yourself at depth) requied mods that were probably not actually legal since they relied on the modmaker doing decompilation and hex decoding and all sorts of such funky stuff to find the bug Ubi simply wouldn't patch... But with SH4 + the 3D insub environment we could have had, with some help from the modders, a good combo of an immersion into the "fear envirnoment" of the people that did this for real, and realism. It says a lot when the first mods released are to relieve you of the requirement to trump Gûnther Prien's lifetime achievement on your first patrol... Submarine FPS! Yaaaaayyyy..... ahem...

Depends really; deploy your chaff and then dissapear into the notch yourself. But yes, the chaff is an addition to what you really should be doing - exploit the doppler notch and make it bleed energy. Chaff just makes it slightly easier, but chaff on it's own nowadays is not going to cut it.

I'll add this to calm you down: There are many things that are more profitable than serious flight sims. There's a reason ED hasn't gone that way - it's owners are flight sim fans. ;) It's a case of "want something done, do it yourself". :P
-
Heh, yeah - I made a very successful sale of my DICE stock shortly before that. Was awesome. :P But well, as far as being bought up goes, I actually suspect there's very limited risk of EA, Ubi etcetera trying a takeover on ED. MiG, Boeing, EADS etcetera on the other hand... That might happen. :P Regarding DICE, what I want them to do is get back to racing games. Do you remember Raillisport Challenge and Motorhead? OMG those were awesome! (And were what made me purchase a shareholding as well, back in the days. :P )

I'll add a clarification: The rating on the PSU's aren't what they always draw, it's their maximum. (Or, well, maximum where the manufacturer guarantees that they'll do it right and not burn etc. :P ) So having a 300W draw on a 1000W PSU doesn't mean you are paying a kWh for each hour your computer is on. (Most likely the total draw will be somewhere around 330W or 360W, with the extra lost as heat during conversion. This will however vary depending on what you are doing; during "facebook load" it'll probably sit way lower - like 100W - while during "rendering time" it'll peak up to that 300-450 region.) Ratings are typically for what they GIVE, so a 1000W PSU can theoretically draw something like 1100W to 1200W from the grid if fully utilized, but a computer that manages THAT is rare. :P
-
Pretty much entirely agreed with the previous speaker, though with one modifier: I "choose" my PSU wattage based on expected components, you typically want twice the capacity you will be using (since they're the most efficient there - meaning less incoming electricity gets lost as heat). This is however a purely economics consideration - it's about keeping an eye on your electricity bill. As far as the performance, totally agreed. And of course, depending on the electricity prices where you live and how much the computer gets used at "full draw", it might actually get more expensive to buy a "bigger" PSU than just accept the energy loss. Here in sweden energy is fairly expensive (we have a big tax on it, and then we pay VAT on the total INCLUDING the tax - so yeah, we pay tax on the tax we paid... go figure! :D ) so it is probably less relevant to you than to me. 1000W PSU would depend on it's rating. If you give me the exact model name I can check it out.

Is this really as complicated as it looks?
EtherealN replied to markwilliam's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
Guys, I know it's tempting, but please don't attack him personally. That'll just make me close the thread. I'm keeping it up for now in case he has a change of heart. -
It's a bit more copmlicated than that. Each new hire needs familiarization with the codebase, training in the inhouse standards and practices, toolchain and so on. This means that some existing staff has to take time from "productive" work to train the new hire. So, as might seem paradoxical, hiring a lot of people can actually lead to reduced productivity overall - for a while. Further, you need to find people with the right qualifications; you can't just take any software engineer and set them to work doing AFMs - you want to find people with qualifications in that type of physics (and afford to pay them enough that they don't immediately get snapped up by Boeing, SAAB, MiG etcetera). Similarly, you can't just take anyone with a degree in computer game design and set them to work designing aircraft modules - you want people with those work qualifications AND familiarity with military aircraft systems. Also, SME's are not typically employees by the company since they'll usually be quite specialized. (DCS P-51D is a special case here, since TFC has in-house competence on both the pilot and maintenance/mechanical sides.)

It's actually not money with little effort. It's money upfront, then money for warehousing, then money for handling, then HOPEFULLY you sell reasonably close to the print run you made and don't end up with a couple thousand thick manuals just lying around the hangar... ;)
-
Ah, that was you? I think it was me that handled your ticket too. :P Happy to help. :)

Is this really as complicated as it looks?
EtherealN replied to markwilliam's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
Actually, I think you can _fly_ a real one without too much issues. (Assuming good weather.) Simply _flying_ an aircraft is really simple, and with the A-10's configuration it's a nicely stable and gentle aircraft. It's takeoff and landing (and combat maneuvers) that are likely to kill people. :P The Fighter Collection has it's own fully operational P-51D, so in the case of the DCS P-51D it's flight model etc was compared and evaluated with in-house access to both plane and pilot. :) Here's the lovely "Miss Welma": -
If you purchased an Upgrade license, this is the problem: if you select International Full, it will want a license key for that, which you would then not have. Uninstall through the module manager (click the trashcan icon for Black Shark 2), and then reinstall using Upgrade. You can find an installer here as well: http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/downloads/modules/dcs_black_shark_2_upgrade/
-
...or a different mirror. Use the drop-down list to select a different server mirror for that file.
-
You forgot the screenshot. My 1.2.6 has a module manager. Have you checked your shortcuts to ensure that you are launching the DCS install you think you are?
-
This is correct. You can see this information in the QuickStart document. New activation is required when the cumulative changes to the system exceeds 12 points. CPU change, as listed in the document, is 13 points. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Bought A-10C from ED store, How to install in STEAM
EtherealN replied to jn1053's topic in Installation Problems
jn1053, I believe I answered your support ticket a little earlier, you will find some information there, if that was you. Here's the important points: You do NOT need to unbind anything to make it work on Steam. That is for transferring keys to a friend; not to your own account to Steam. To use your key on Steam, you do NOT use the installer downloaded from here. Steam cannot accept it because Steam will handle all installs on Steam for you. Steam accepts keys through you pressing Games > Activate a Product on Steam. Then enter the key. That's it. No install files, no nothing; if Steam accepts the key it will handle the rest for you. However, please note that it can take a while for the database entry of your key to be transferred from Eagle Dynamics to Valve. Therefore your key might not be possible to move _yet_. Again: it has absolutely nothing to do with "unbinding". Don't worry about that thing at all, it's completely irrelevant. -
See here: http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/downloads/video/

See picture below. Click that, and the AutoUpdater tool will download and install the training videos for FC3.
-
Well, the biggest bad news is that it doesn't have mechanical keys. :P For me, that alone disqualifies a keyboard. That said, I get a shot at trying one of those for a short while when visiting a friend a couple weeks back, and aside from the keys thing it did seem like a pretty nice KB.

.ogg file vs. .wav file what's the difference?
EtherealN replied to fitness88's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
WAV is uncompressed. Files therefore get huge. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WAV OGG is compressed. Files get smaller. Quality can suffer in some cases due to compression. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ogg_Vorbis -
As the download page suggests: All 5 files should be downloaded and put into one folder before launching setup. Filenames are of importance. These files are: DCS_World_1.2.6.20768.297-292.exe DCS_World_1.2.6.20768.297-292-1.bin DCS_World_1.2.6.20768.297-292-2.bin DCS_World_1.2.6.20768.297-292-3.bin DCS_World_1.2.6.20768.297-292-4.bin Procedure is: 1) Download those files. 2) Double-click the exe. NOTE: you do not have to open any bin files, the exe does that.

I'm guessing he meant USB monitors, which some people use to export the MFCDs. (Coupled with those MFCD button rings you can buy, this can make a really nice controller on the A-10C.)

How To Send Support $$ For DCS ?
EtherealN replied to Wrecking Crew's topic in DCS World 1.x (read only)
Incorrect, keys are registered to the account that purchased them. It used to be the way you describe, but this was changed a few years ago. However, you can "unbind" keys in order to give them to someone else, through using this: https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/personal/licensing/ -
Adding to steam as a non-steam game..
EtherealN replied to jbrking's topic in DCS World 1.x (read only)
Adding as a non-steam game is not a problem, since when 1.2.7 is deployed to Steam it will obviously not be done so as a "non-steam" game. -
Problem with FC# - F15 - Engine Cutoff in Flight
EtherealN replied to yyzpilot's topic in Bugs and Problems
Do you have a track file showing this behaviour?
