  1. I was in the same boat as you last month. I decided to buy it just based on the fact that it was highly rated and because I’m flying the A-10C. I haven’t had it long enough to provide you with the life limits of the switches. I do have kids in the house who like to play with buttons and switches all the time, so I did pay an extra $10 or so for extended warranty when I purchased from Amazon. I did receive a brand new item. Not used. They had 12 in stock last month. Price was $450. I did find one for $380 on triplenetpricing, of whom I never heard of, but after reading their terrible reviews I couldn’t trust them. They also had a 6-8 week shipping estimate for an item that was “in stock”. I bought it through Amazon, got free 2-day shipping, no taxes. It came in 1 day. I then submitted a claim through my credit card for a price-match since my CC offers that as a benefit, and they honored the $380 price. I got a $70 refund a few days later. First time I ever did that, it was awesome! I don’t have any issues with the stiction, and I think it is very smooth as is. Again, I’ve had it 1 month now. I hate the slew switch as 100% of the people do, however, it works and I’m not a die-hard gamer or competitive player, so it’s fine as is for me. I did spend about two hours researching mods and replacement switches, but it looks like I’d have to drop another $50 to $150 to replace the one switch. Doesn’t make sense for my needs. I can slew around just fine, even though it would be easier with a better switch. If you tweak your axis curves and saturations for the slew’s two axes, you’ll find that the switch is much better and not worth a mod for so much extra money. Everything else is great. It’s really heavy and doesn’t need to be bolted down. In fact, I place the throttle on a small nightstand next to my chair for a more accurate location (I fly VR), and the nightstand sometimes slips around on my floor, but never the throttle slipping on the nightstand. I don’t regret the purchase at all. It’s really great. It’s tough to find perfection in this world, and you’ll never find it in an online review. People only log in to leave reviews when they have something to complain about. I think you’ll love the product as much as I do, especially if you’re flying the hog in the sim.
  2. What’s the weather like in your mission? Perhaps a 100 kts tailwind? Probably obvious, but worth checking in case you’re playing some random mission you found online.
  3. Did you check your axis settings and make sure saturation is set to 100% ? Sounds like you just are reaching the end of the travel for the joystick axis.
  4. Thanks guys. I don’t have a favorite mission yet. I’m still new and always end up underneath a parachute if I’m lucky.
  5. I’m looking for a mission that would be good for a VR demo when letting friends try DCS in VR for their first time. I’m not good with the mission editor, so I thought I’d see if you can recommend, or create something. Requirements would be... -For the A-10C in Caucasus -Runway hot start -Starting airport close to water and mountains, so user can decide which terrain they prefer and get there quickly. -Plenty of ground targets to shoot at, stationary, and moving columns. A good mix that is suitable for guns, guided bombs, cluster bombs. (It’s all about providing various options so that each user can decide what best suits his taste) -Some ships in the water -Aerial refueling nearby -Very easy air targets to shoot down -Nothing that returns fire or fries to shoot you down (first time VR users just want to fly and have fun) -No aircraft failures set to occur -Minimize cockpit work for the first-time user (TGP and Mav EO defaulted to be on and active from startup, guns on, master arm on, etc) -Perhaps the user just wants to fly and enjoy the view, so waypoints should take you through scenic locations (along the coast, into the mountains, etc). -15-20 minute flight from takeoff to landing since VR isn’t for everyone and 15 minutes might be too long if you are prone to motion sickness. Something like this would be great, if it doesn’t already exist. Thanks a bunch.
  6. YouTube is your answer. There are several really great playlists you should add... -Ralfi’s idiot guide to DCS (by Ralfidude) -On the range tutorial series (by Bunyap Sims) Start with those. Also, lots and lots of reading... -The 600+ page manual -The A10C Guide by Chuck -DCS A-10C Expanded HOTAS Function Listing by Topgun505 All great stuff. The A-10C is a sim, not a game, so don’t expect anything to be easy. You’ll have 1 hour of flying for every 1 hour of learning...if you’re lucky.
  7. I’ve only flown VR in the A10C, until just now I tired out a 172 in XPlane. Wow what a difference in the visuals/realism. I would have to assume the A10 cockpit update is a priority. If it looked as good as I just experienced in XPlane, I may not be able to leave the house.
  8. I did not use any curves except for the awful slew switch. It’s all personal preference when it comes to curves.
  9. Hi all...if I get viacom, will it work with the free version of voiceattack, or do I need to unlock voiceattack first?
  10. See this... http://www.users.on.net/~jase_ash/http:/www.users.on.net/~jase_ash/styled-9/styled-3/index.html
  11. Above, it was mentioned that the TM Warthog has an idle detent. I’ll add that it also has an afterburner detent. The instruction manual shows you how to easily add this detent by opening up the base, flipping one piece around, then putting it back together. I haven’t flown a real hornet, but I got to spend an hour in the simulators at Miramar a few years ago and that was the first time I learned about the AB detent. I couldn’t imagine a proper sim setup without it for the Hornet.
  12. So.... can we sum it all up as follows? If you’re a simmer, go VR now! If you’re a gamer, wait for the next gen. If you have extra cash, go VR either way just to try it.
  13. I’m flying the A10. Rolling in on a target is a very cool experience. Looking out over your shoulder, keeping your eye on the target, making the turn, the nose of the aircraft slowly comes into view, then lines up with your target, then pull the trigger. What fun! I also enjoy the buttery smooth landings because I can take quick peaks over my shoulder to see exactly where the main wheel is in relation to the ground during my flare. This lets me put the wheel down on the runway much smoother than if I was just staring straight ahead at the centerline. So far, no nausea from any of the flying and maneuvers (at 45FPS). The only times I’ve been getting slight nausea only for a few brief seconds is when your taxi is over and you come to a stop your aircraft does that last moment nose dip and pop back up. It’s slight, but your brain perceives the deceleration motion and is a weird feeling. Also, off-field landings on the grass or roads (I like VR so much that I only land when I run out of fuel, lol) is a little nauseating due to the bumpy rollout. I usually just close my eyes and take quick peaks until the aircraft stops, or rolls over and explodes (which is much less nauseating). Of course, nothing to worry about if you just land on a runway. Also, external views are actually pretty cool. Sure, it’s a slight break from immersion, but it’s really awesome to just float outside your aircraft and look at it. Even pressing F6 and following your bombs to the ground is neat. Once you get your VR delivered and working. Make sure to come back and tell us what YOU think. Is it really worth it?
  14. I don’t know how it runs on Windows 7, no experience. I was also very anti-switching to 10, but I just bought a new PC (prebuilt) and all the new ones come with 10. I looked for something with Windows 7, but ended up just going with 10. Now that I have it, I’m not so anti-10. I might still like 7 better, but 10 is just fine, no regrets buying it.
  15. Yes! I’m new to DCS and VR altogether, but I’m hooked. You will quickly not care about the lower resolution. It’s not really that bad. Hard to spot targets from 10kft? Yeah, but I have a TGP for that :) I can easily make out targets on the ground during a strafing run when I get within gun range. HUD is clearly visible. I’m running a 2080 card in my PC. DCS is limited at 45 FPS for VR no matter how low I turn down the settings. That being said, I have all graphics settings on highest possible and PD of 1.5 and I’m gettting a solid 45 FPS. PD 2.0 dropped it down to 40 FPS and I was able to tell the difference. 45 FPS lets me stay in the cockpit for several hours without any nausea. Good luck, and yes, go for it. I found the Rift + Touch on Microsoft’s eBay store for $299 last month. It was a no-brainer. Also, you need to find a way to stay away from the keyboard as much as possible when in VR. I found this out the hard way, by having to spend another $450 for the TM Warthog. It gets expensive quick, but well worth it.
  16. I found this way, which I thought was easier: Just copy and paste another icon on the desktop add --force_disable_VR in the target line. My screenshot tells all...
  17. It's not full circle until I see a 172 on the runway at Miegs!
  18. Nice teaser. I can’t identify it.
  19. I’m unfamiliar with the bug. Does this mean laser spot is only good up to 8nm away?
  20. Search for “DCS buddy lasing” on google and you’ll find everything. Here’s just one I found for you.
  21. I liked the built-in ones for convenience, but too much sound would bleed through and bother my wife who works on another computer in same room. I switched to the Bose since they cup my ears. I also use them IRL with the NFlightMic when flying around in Cessnas, so it’s the same feeling on my ears whether in a real plane or DCS.
  22. I will add to the above that I removed the Rift earphones and am using my Bose QC35 instead. It’s much better of course, and I do get 3D audio with it. I’m connected wirelessly with Bluetooth. I would imagine other similar headsets would be similar in performance.
  23. As a real pilot, sometimes when I check in with ground or clearance it also take 5 minutes! Not sure what your issue is. I’m new to DCS altogether and it just worked fine for me from the get-go. I just purchased the 3 Maple Leaf campaigns since they are on sale now so I can continue my training. I felt quite unsatisfied with the in-game training. It was enough to tease me, but nothing really to learn from. I’ve learned a lot more from YouTube. After I was done with training and YouTubing, I tried a mission and got smoked. There’s still plenty to learn before hopping in on the action. I’m having fun doing it though. As long as I’m flying I’m happy. Don’t rush the training. Good luck.
  24. Thanks for the response, but I got it figured out. There was another thread with this topic that I didn’t see until now. No need for another app. You can just edit the target for the shortcut to force it into non-vr mode.
  25. Is there anyway to launch DCS without Oculus opening up? Sometimes I unplug the Rift and just want to play “2D”, but whenever I launch DCS, Oculus opens too. If I close Oculus, it also kills DCS. Bonus question: Is there a way to leave the headset plugged in, but launch DCS in non-VR mode, without Oculus opening up? I hate having to unplug the headset all the time. I’m sure I’ll wear out the USB connectors in no time. I’d like to have two shortcuts on my desktop. One that launches DCS in VR mode with Oculus, and one that launches DCS without Oculus. Possible? Thanks in advance.
