Thanks, I didn't know that either!

Hi, Until recently I didn't even know what a helicopter's WSPS is and I only learned of its existence when it was mentioned in one of Casmo's Apache videos. Wikipedia: "The Wire Strike Protection System (WSPS) is a mechanical wire cutter designed to mitigate the risk of wire strikes whilst flying helicopters at low-level": Looks like these things cut through wires like butter. Apparently the Apache has installed multiple cable cutters: (from: https://www.reddit.com/r/EngineeringPorn/comments/l3n720/wirestrike_protection_system_wsps_cable_cutter_in/, I think there is also an additional one installed directly on the gun mount) Although I doubt there will be functioning cable cutters implemented in DCS I still find it interesting to find out and learn about this kind of stuff Cheers!

Question regarding Tomcat carrier landing in YT video
Lazerhawk replied to Lazerhawk's topic in DCS: Supercarrier
Thanks! -
Hello, In the following YT video at 2:02 the pilot (or RIO) calls out some numbers when in the groove: "600 .. 700 .. 700 .. 600" Does anyone know what these mean? Could it be the vertical air speed? Best regards!

cannot reproduce and missing track file HMD Target Designated Acting Funny
Lazerhawk replied to bonesvf103's topic in DCS: F/A-18C
Thank you, that is a very interesting point. Coming from A-10's HMD I just figured that it will magically behave the same way in every aircraft, which of course is not the case. -
cannot reproduce and missing track file HMD Target Designated Acting Funny
Lazerhawk replied to bonesvf103's topic in DCS: F/A-18C
Thanks for the response. So you're also using the HMD to look at the target and then depress the TDC? When I do that, especially when looking out of the cockpit sideways or behind me, the diamond will often drift (but not always). Sometimes I feel like it only stabilizes when there is some visual cue on the ground, like a distinct tree line (but that wouldn't really make any sense I guess). -
Slew sensibility of A/G designation on hud and hmd

This! Over sensitive HMD slew is driving me nuts -
cannot reproduce and missing track file HMD Target Designated Acting Funny
Lazerhawk replied to bonesvf103's topic in DCS: F/A-18C
Sorry for digging up this old thread, but has this issue ever been resolved? I just did the same thing OP did (target designate with JHMCS, no TGP) and the diamond keeps drifting most of the time and won't ground stabilize. -
What's the secret to getting the throttle to move/rotate during startup?
Lazerhawk replied to sirrah's topic in DCS: UH-1H
I use JoyToKey to bind PgUp/PgDn to my TWCS Throttle's rocker switch axis's min/max position. Works like a charm -

The feedback in this thread really motivated me to give the Huey a second chance. And what can I say? I'm having a great time My first attempt at flying helicopters failed because of my own arrogance: I thought I was playing DCS for years now, so hard could flying a helicopter be? So I didn't even read up basic concepts like Ground Effect, Translational Lift or Vortex Ring State, boy was I wrong! By now I'm really starting to get the hang of it. Take-off and flight are no longer a problem. And most of the time I'm pretty satisfied with the landings as well (I only manage to get the chopper down safely on a runway or an empty field yet and not on a heli pad of course :)) So now I'm even more looking forward to the Apache. And until then it's practicing the Huey Cheers!

Thanks for the insights! I guess it's back to Huey 101 for me then

Thank you guys, these are interesting answers so far!

Hello, I mainly fly fixed wing aircraft like A-10C, F/A-18C and P-51D. I also tried to learn the UH-1H Huey at some point but I found it very difficult to control the aircraft. Counteracting the torque with the pedals especially gave me a hard time. I know that practice makes perfect but I was wondering if more modern helicopters, like Apache or Hind, are easier to learn when it comes to the actual flying and maneuvering? Best regards!

P-51D - Wing Line Method of Ground Attack
Lazerhawk replied to Lazerhawk's topic in DCS: P-51D Mustang
Thank you very much, I don't know how I missed that It's described on p. 120 in Chuck's guide from 2021-03-02. -
Hello, I just watched The Air Combat Tutorial Library's video "P-51D - Wing Line Method of Ground Attack" In this video they use special markings on the P-51's wings to determine the proper moment to start the dive to attack ground targets. As this video is for IL-2 I wanted to ask if there is a livery for DCS's P-51 with accurate wing markings as well? Also does anybody know if this method was used often with real life P-51s? It seems to be a very useful method and it's strange that most real life liveries (that I have seen) don't have these wing markings? On a side note: I highly recommend to download the "Air Forces Manual No.64 - Fighter Gunnery Firing Rockets Dive Bombing 1May1945.pdf" which is attached in the description of the YouTube video above. On p.32 there's the section about wing markings. Best regards!

An option to switch modern/WW2 pilot model would indeed be awesome!

Thanks again for the detailed feedback and for the suggestions. That sounds good to me, so no need to waste your energy for a portable mode
-
Thanks for the answer! I have some good experience with all sorts of portable software. Not only does it allow me to use a pre-made config on multiple systems, it usually also makes it very easy to completely separate different configs. For example in this case I could imagine having a OpenModManager package exclusively for DCS and another for a completely different game without interfering. A portable version (where all the config files are stored inside the program directory) makes it also very easy to do backups of all the necessary files: just zip the program folder and you're done. I know this surely isn't a top priority issue but I would be very glad if portable mode would be supported as an option in the future. Cheers!

This is a really cool project, thank you very much! Any chance there will be a release as a portable zip, i.e. without installer? Or can I just unpack the setup.exe file and use OpenModMan.exe and its three DLLs just as a portable app? Does it modify any Windows registry entries or create user specific folders in %APPDATA%?
