  1. The Huey looks pretty sweet, but I am curious about some things before I go for it. Can you do barrel rolls and swing a slinged object around like a flail? Also, can a slinged object damage other vehicles or aircraft? Does it break off if it touches something? Thanks
  2. I noticed in one of the recent updates the drag values changed for the F/A-18 weapons, so I did another speed test to see if any of the bugs had been worked out. I hope it will be useful to somebody. The test conditions are level flight at 5000ft ASL, 29.92, Full AB, unlimited fuel. Speed is allowed to stabilize in time compression. Speeds are knots IAS. Latest stable 2.5.5.33184. Edit: There are no wingtip or fuselage missiles for these tests, except the one stated to have them. Definitely get rid of the racks as soon as you can. -AGMs still have high drag relative to bombs, but it's less pronounced with the bomb drag correction. -The drag of an AMRAAM hardpoint now correctly changes depending of the number of missiles on it. The racks still have a lot of drag, so lose them. -There is still a bug where a full AMRAAM double rack has the same drag as an AMRAAM single rack. -AAMs still have a lot of drag compared to everything else. Not sure if this is accurate (I mean, an AMRAAM is just a skinny HARM, so you'd think it would have less drag). -Rockets are still drag king. Overall this is a huge improvement over previously, so thanks ED! Since the wonky bomb drag was fixed, I'm sure a solution for the AMRAAMs isn't far behind. edit: Added wingtips broken off
  3. Thanks guys. If the failures are predictable then it sound great. Sorry for getting upset, but in Ka-50 I can instantly blade clash with so much as 1/2 right stick deflection while cruising (and this is with curves and roll input limited to 70%). It's really annoying.
  4. You know what I meant and that is a rude response. Is it possible to move the stick to a position under normal speeds where the Huey insta-dies?
  5. On a similar note, does the Huey have any finicky downsides or frustrations that might scare off a newer player with a cheap joystick? I want to love the Ka-50 but the semi-random blade clash deaths have made me rage quit one too many times. From watching people fly it online, the Huey looks more chill and forgiving to throw around, is that the case?
  6. The key is to learn where the contact is first, then set your radar to scan at the correct angle and elevation. Then you might pick up a fighter sized target as far away as 20 miles. I find F10 is really handy for this.
  7. When the F10 map and labels are not available, gotta find the vehicle icons somehow. AG radar and tpod sounds exciting. Someday we will be able to orbit in the middle of the map and just toss sows and poons at blips in all directions. The smackdown will be so epic the Bug will be renamed the Sharknado.
  8. "In range" shows up at 1nm last I checked ingame. e. Composite of screenshots from a 2 second burst. The building just happened to be exactly 100ft wide. It's hard to see with the smoke, but a 100% circle is at least 30 mils wide.
  9. And in-game you can use time compression to get an unrealistically accurate burst. It's basically a rigid test stand.
  10. Unlimited ammo in a custom mission with 20 different planes as enemies, who are set to 'return fire' ROE.
  11. Hm, but does it work with engines off? I tried with engines idle and windmilling, also with the fire shutoffs, high rpm and low.
  12. Fourspeed you are right to question my fuel economy, but you misunderstand. I run out of fuel exactly as planned, because deadstick is 40% cooler than normal. Especially after a fight where I just barely didn't eat it. It's even cooler if you're smoking and the gear lowers just before you touch down.
  13. Cool, thanks! I had no idea. Doesn't seem to work in current stable version (ran out of fuel, twisted, pulled and dropped handle, no joy), but when it does I'm sure I'll get lots of use out of it.
  14. So I'm out of gas, gliding to the airport and don't want to scratch the plane. Is there any way to lower the gear? I haven't found a way but I want to be sure there isn't a manual override or a way to unlock the doors, or something.
  15. Confirmed. Thanks for pointing that out. In fact, the OBOGS on/off switch doesn't seem to do anything at all. Cruising at 45,000 with it off and I was fine. Maybe that's a bug :) edit: But I am still curious if the mask has a suction-operated check valve that allows breathing ambient air when there is no supply from OBOGS. Otherwise you'd just be sucking on the mask and the hose.
  16. When at low altitudes, or even sitting on the ground with the canopy open, turning off OBOGS makes the player black out and die. Not sure if this is a bug or intended behavior. If intended behavior, is there a workaround? I've had my pilot die from an OBOGS failure because I couldn't figure out how to tell him to take his mask off. Thx edit: This moved to the bug forum, so replication instructions (latest stable version as of Jun 23): 1. Spawn in hot F/A-18 on ground. 2. Open canopy. 3. Turn OBOGS flow knob to 0. 4. Zzz
  17. Good example. For comparison, a BMP-2 is 6.7 meters long. Can't work out a precise value without the range, but given how gently the pilots pull up after the attack, it's further than I normally shoot (G override every time to avoid the ground). So the pattern width is within a vehicle length, at a non-suicidal distance. This is not the case in DCS. Edit: In-game test. I started shooting one second after the break X started flashing. Pulling away from the hill caused greyout and I just missed the trees. I think it's fair to say the Axalpa shooting distance is further, yet the in-game pattern is twice the size. One more thought; even if, in theory, clamps can increase the dispersion, the sim should model them without. Equipment in the sim is usually portrayed in an ideal state, not a degraded state. Like how the Ka-50 gun has practically no dispersion despite it being a flexible mounted helicopter gun, optics always track perfectly, gun computers always have perfect information from the sensors, and muzzle velocities are always to manufacturer spec, with no account for wear.
  18. If written data or ground tests aren't enough, the only way to figure it out (short of getting in your plane and shooting at the ground) is to find a video of an F18 shooting, and the impacts, where you can work out the firing range and target width. Like, Axalpa, or something. There's got to be a clip somewhere that has the required data. Edit:. Or even just a video of the F18 HUD while firing. You just have to see the tracers filling the gunsight ring, which is a known angle.
  19. I use undesignated too, but sometimes it doesn't work. I don't know the cause, but it seems to only get stuck after an engagement. If I just turn AACQ on and off without locking anything it works fine.
  20. Someone decompile the game and flip the sign on that line.
  21. Retired? Canada will use them until we run out of duct tape. Very good hand-me-downs.
  22. Not to necro this but, Has anyone learned why the trim gets nose-up after doing an auto flaps takeoff?
  23. Just shoot all your missiles like a anime robot.
  24. A person can throw a baseball 80 miles (note: pitcher must be at 60,000 feet and moving at mach 5).
  25. NWS hi is the undesignated button. Sometimes you have to click it repeatedly or hold it down for it to work. 'NWS HI' will appear on the bottom right of the HUD when it's engaged. Edit: paddle switch/G override button will cancel NWS and NWS HI.
