  1. I read on the rec.aviation.military newsgroup that the pilot managed to scare himself (and the crowd) by getting far too close to the ground during his display. This photo looks like it might be that manoeuvre! Either that or the undercarriage goes up very quickly indeed on takeoff :-) Andrew McP
  2. About the same FPS as a machine that cost half as much, I reckon ;-) Andrew McP
  3. Now *that* is a great shot. Almost makes me regret stopping going to shows in recent years. However western kit doesn't really do much for me, and if there's no Su-27, there's no me either. :-) http://www.andrewmcp.50g.com/biggin99/bh99su27b.htm <sigh> Andrew McP
  4. One piece of advice. The most important bit of a laptop is the screen IMO. I bought a nice laptop early last year (3GHz/1Gb/ATI M10 chipset (9600Pro-ish speed) which runs LOMAC fairly well), but buying mail order you don't get to look at the screen first. It's a great machine, but the screen is a big disappointment compared to the desktop LCDs I've seen. It's to be expected really. A thin screen is always going to me much harder to light evenly, and in gaming and DVD watching mine has an obvious brightness gradient which I have to make an effort to ignore. This is by no means rare on laptops, as a trip round anywhere selling a few will show you if you can test them. Recent improvements have probably helped at the top end of the range, but I will *never* buy a laptop again without seeing it running first. I thought I'd get used to the screen on mine, but I was wrong. It's fine for desktop work (love the 1400x1050 res) but for gaming it's poor. Expensive thing to take a longterm dislike to :-) Andrew McP
  5. Sorry Pancho, I don't think it's possible. :-( Andrew McP
  6. We'll only lose this kind of behaviour *if* (and it's a big "if" unfortunately) the Su-27 gets the advanced flight model. If you want satisfying behaviour on the edges of the flight envelope you'll have to fly the 25 (and use x2 time acceleration to make it a less boring aerobatic experience ;-). Andrew McP
  7. The problem is that because of the high stick forces it's very hard to make small accurate movements (especially in a diagonal direction). That's why I shelved mine and went for CH instead where -- if anything -- you have the opposite problem. However by reducing the sensitivity of the joystick profile in LOMAC (ie large stick deflection required for small aircraft movement) you ought to be able to minimise the problem with the Cougar. You wouldn't want to dogfight with it set up like that though. Andrew McP
  8. I've only had a quick, relatively unscientific test on a PC that has a 9800SE and the Su-25 1.1 demo at 1024x768. Results in level flight after hitting s: Old drivers: 17-19fps New drivers:10-12 fps Thought it was using identical settings (sliders set to max performance rather than quality) but hopefully I'm doing very something wrong :-) Andrew McP PS I wasn't expecting an improvement in most cases anyway. Magical driver enhancements usually turn out to be cheats or wishful thinking.
  9. You will either love it or hate it. There are many people in both camps. I certainly hate mine, the default gimbal design is *awful* and I just can't fly accurately with it. Looks very pretty on the shelf though :-) Good luck with yours. While you wait I suggest lots of one-armed press-ups to strengthen your right arm ;-) Andrew McP
  10. At last, an aircraft we're all qualified to pilot! :-) Andrew McP
  11. There's a lot of impressive stuff there, thanks for the link. I may have to stop sneering at consoles now :-) Andrew McP
  12. Richard Burns Rally. Very good (and very hard!) rally driving sim despite the console ports, which isn't usually a good sign. http://www.richardburnsrally.com/ Andrew McP
  13. The best strategy is to delete all AI flights and do everything yourself ;-) I just wish ED would find a way of giving us an lua-like ability to experiment with the AI ourselves. However we're stuck with what we've got, so... It's possible that by making sure the targetting is set to "missile" instead of the default "any" weapon, they will cut & run after firing the last missile. It sounds like the aircraft you talk about are circling in the hope they'll be able to carry out a guns attack in whatever dreamworld their C++ brains live in. Andrew McP
  14. I think everyone agreed a long time ago that if you want that kind of experience, Falcon4 is the place to go. LOMAC is superb at what it does. But creating large scale experiences is certainly not on that list.... and I doubt it ever will be; ED's style and approach is different. Personally I prefered EECH's "medium scale" approach to warfare (which makes it all the more annoying that Razorworks went AWOL from flight sims). In F4 I always feel like my efforts don't really matter... the scale of the operations is *too* great. At the other end of the scale, in LOMAC I feel like I'm the *only* thing that matters... because I can't rely the AI to do what they're tasked with. One ping on their radar and they're off in headless chicken mode. I'd be happy with LOMAC's small scale approach if you could rely on the AI more to stick to their main mission goals. Andrew McP
  15. Very good! I have not flown that mission since Tigrou posted his great time for the Su-27 track. I keep practising, but I don't think I will *ever* be that fast. Not in a million years! :-) Yes, I like the fact that it tests all our skills as pilots. Apart from combat. Mmm... maybe we could make a course with targets on as well :-) Andrew McP
  16. In recent days I've been enjoying flying the Su-27 with thrust split over two axes on the pedals on my wheel (I use the rudder on my Saitek X-45). With all that power and agility to play with it's great fun. The Su-25, in comparison, is a bit of a slug. But the AFM is so addictive I found myself messing about with it for longer than I planned today. Ok, it's a bit boring in the horizontal, but with thrust to the engines separated, a heavy hand on the rudder, and the luxury of re-starting when you die (regularly!), the horizontal can be an entertaining place to "hang" around in. I also discovered that now the trk view editing in 1.1 seems to be perfect. It remembers *every* change of camera view/angle/movement. Before this could be very hit and miss. That's a great help to movie makers. Anyway, the results of my messing about are at http://www.andrew.mcp.dsl.pipex.com/Friday_13th_Part_X.zip You might want to CTRL A through a lot of it, but I've tried to edit the views so it's not too dull between the interesting bits. And remember, every good pilot must try to leave his aircraft neatly in the parking area ;-) Andrew McP PS It's only a 1.3Mb file PPS Just discovered that because it's just the 25 it works in the demo as well. The only thing missing is the right skin and the smoke pods, though the smoke works fine. While running it in the demo I was reminded that I normally fly with the cockpit warning slider turned all the way down. I don't like being nagged constantly when throwing aircraft around :-)
  17. This morning I have spent another two hours flying exactly the same mission (just me and some towers to fly around, no other aircraft or vehicles) and I have not had any problems. I was hoping to be able to add some more information to help track down the problem I had yesterday, but maybe the problem is my PC and not LOMAC. I will fly some more later today to try to understand what is happening. For the record:- PC: AMD Mobile Barton 2.16GHz (166x13 for 100% Prime95 stability) 1Gb Corsair XMS memory DFI Ultra Infinity motherboard, rev A (nForce 2) Onboard sound (Nvidia SoundStorm with Realtek ALC650 CODEC) Controllers: 1) CH Fighterstick... for normal joystick use. 2) Saitek X45... for rudder & thrust (both engines) 3) Logitech MOMO wheel & pedals. Normally not used. Pedals currently used for left & right thrust. I've put the .mis & graphics info in http://www.andrew.mcp.dsl.pipex.com/Andrew_McP.zip but I don't think it will help you. Sorry I can't be more helpful. I should've kept my mouth shut until I had more evidence! :-) Andrew McP
  18. This is probably a very borderline issue with 1.1 that won't affect many people, but I'm mentioning it just for the record in case others meet it and we track down a common cause. I enjoy flying around in an Su-27 pushing the flight model to its limits. Twice this morning, while messing about with split engines for the first time (each engine on separate axis), I've had the sound suddenly cut out. That's the first thing I notice anyway. At the same time the keyboard goes dead (can't light up/turn off capslock etc) and all controller input is ignored. The aircraft keeps flying (using the last recorded controller inputs) until it reaches the ground. LOMAC then freezes, with the view still in the cockpit, staring at the ground. I imagine the next thing that would normally happen is the view would switch to the external explosion. The computer is frozen at this point, ignoring all input (including CTRL, ALT, DELETE) until I reset. This only happened twice in about two hours, so it will be hard to work out exactly what combination of events is causing it. But I've never had it happen before in many hours of 1.1 flying, so I'm fairly sure it will be something to do with split throttle inputs, which I doubt is a common way of flying. Andrew McP
  19. You guys are as mad as the French :-> Andrew McP
  20. It's at times like this I'm proud to be European :-) You've got to hand it to those French guys, they always have another surprise tucked up their sleeves! Andrew McP
  21. Yes, but I bet all 10 examples were faster than my 1:36 :-) Heh, it won't be me! ;-) Good idea. The blackouts make flying fast very difficult. Sometimes too much realism spoils the fun. Another good idea. But make sure they are slow, ok? ;-) Andrew McP
  22. !! :-) Yes, the trk works fine. 1:29 is a *superb* time. As I thought, you get the time down so low by pulling off a near-perfect example of turning sharply, bleeding almost all your speed away, and "dropping" onto the runway at minimum speed. Very good flying. But then having seen your movies I expected nothing less :-) Everyone should watch this. Superb technique. Andrew McP
  23. The problem is finding enough bridges close together to make a nice circuit. Otherwise it becomes a cross-country race. I've experimented with oil platforms to race under (the only vaguely bridge-like thing we can edit) but decided I'm not ready for that challenge yet :-) The tolerances are very fine, and there's no overtaking potential for eventual online racing. I also wondered if placing two ships close together you could make bridges from the gaps between the prows, but only the carriers are big enough for that really, and you can only use them once. Besides, they're frame rate hogs for many people. I even experimented with using some of the big bombers as static objects, to see if you can dip under their wings. But that's for trick shots, not races... assuming it's possible at all. I never managed it :-) Andrew McP
  24. Hi Tigrou, we know how good your flying is. No need to show us the trk, we believe your time :-) But it would be nice to see you fly anyway. Try... http://rapidshare.de/ It seems very good for small files. No need to register, just upload using the "browse" and "upload" buttons, then you get a link to the uploaded file. Andrew McP
  25. Thanks EB, that's one of the things on my "to do" list. I'm going to sit down soon and read my way through every thread I can find with multiplier discussion in it. It's great to be using a forum where "search" actually works! :-) Andrew McP
