  1. Pretty new to DCS, First real flight sim, been flying the Tomcat primarily. Felt I was ready to tackle some missions. Mission 1, once I understood what I had to do, no biggie. Fly CAP, Kill bombers and fighters, RTB. Mission 2, protect strike forces. Little harder, but again, no biggie. Mission 3, oh lordy. Shit just got real. Fly in, bomb airfield, bug out. Took me about 6 tries. First 5 ended in disaster. 6th attempt, I get a couple bombs on target, BUT my starboard engine is shot to pieces. I get the option to call RTB so I do and head for the coast. Problem 2, no nav on the VDI or the HUD or HDD. The Compass is all I got left. So I snake my way through the mountains but I'm hemorrhaging fuel. Starboard thrust lever all the way back, and into idle. Port engine at half thrust, and the fuel flow stabilized. Jester and my RWR are SCREAMING radar spikes and popups looking for me. Snaking through the mountains.... finally.... OCEAN! Where's the carrier..... radio..... dead. ****! and then I notice the TACAN arrow in the heading indicator.... Jester you BEAUTY! I jettison my remaining bombs, missiles and tanks, and limp home.... 2000 lbs.... 1500 lbs.... 1000 lbs..... WHERE IS THAT GODDAMN BOAT!! And then..... Is that?.... IT IS! 700 lbs of fuel left.... I line up, drop gear, drop hook, flaps,...... STALLING! MORE POWER! BUT FUEL!..... Gear up, flaps up, power down.... at the last possible second I drop the gear and flaps and activate DLC....... I catch the 1 wire and I sit there what felt like an hour. Breathing heavy, smiling, Mission Complete pops up. I look at my fuel gauge.... 400 lbs left. Goddamn. And all this was in VR. Tomorrow, mission 4. Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk

  3. Easy. Top Gun. I was 7 or 8 or so at the time, saw the movie, and was forever tainted. Then Iron Eagle and the Viper became #2 favorite plane. Didn't see Final Countdown till years later. I didn't know much about the plane at the time until I got a toy called "flying fighters" where you had the plane and then a joystick attached and the plane made noises as you moved it up or down and pressed the buttons. It came with Sidewinder, Sparrow and Phoenix missiles and the box explained pretty good what each missile did. Coupled with the working swing wings and landing gear and it was played with for a long time. The decals were of the Sundowners, and when you watch Top Gun, after the "flyby" bit in Viper's office and Goose asks for the Truckmaster number, he's standing next to a Sundowner logo hanging on the wall. So all that together cemented that plane as my clear #1. Now flying her in DCS, and she's such a fun plane to fly, a real stick and rudder feel to her, the DLC when you come in on the deck, just smile after smile. Even though you're not supposed to with the B, I love hearing the afterburners come on right before you launch of the deck. Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
  4. Viper. If you want carrier ops get the Tomcat. If you feel like the Viper is too "on rails" again, Tomcat. I love flying them both, but while the Viper is more mission oriented flying, I'm perfectly happy just cruising around in the Tomcat and doing carrier traps. It's like driving a dual clutch paddle shift vs a manual. Where the Hornet is just a shitty automatic lol. Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
  5. I use a rift S and have no issue seeing the ball or any instruments. I never have to use zoom unless a dev team gone overboard with weathering on the writing next to a knob or switch (Heatblur) lol. Interface is great. I can do everything with my HOTAS and 1 rift controller. No need for a mouse or keyboard. As soon as I start the game and put the HMD on, i never have to take it off or feel around. 6. Would love to see the D model coming after the A. The Tomcat is by far my favorite module to fly so far. Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
  7. Only the A model. The B and D had upgraded engines that didn't have nearly as many issues, and a lot more thrust. The A for instance had to be launched with afterburner while the B and D would launch at mil. Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
  8. I don't think so. A muscle car can only go straight. Especially in the 80's they were worthless. The Tomcat despite it's size is very agile and could hang with the best of them. Although in game the Viper is great, and I love the module, it doesn't come close to the Tomcat in game. The Viper, like the Hornet, with it's fly by wire is too easy to fly. Just turn sideways and yank the stick back to an inch within blackout. The Tomcat is constantly adjusting inputs from stick an rudder. You "fly" the damn thing. For ground ops I'll usually take the Viper just because it's so damn easy to get on target with unguided munitions but if there's air to air involved, the Tomcat every time. In VR I'm just constantly smiling. Even during the flight to the target area. Always trimming, adjusting, etc. The Viper is just set course to steer point, and wait till you're there. If anything, that's a lot more muscle car to me. Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
  9. F-16 all day every day. It's beautiful. The Hornet is an ugly plane. Pilots who transferred from the Tomcat to the Hornet equated it to going from a Ferrari to a minivan. Get the F-16. And the F-14. Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
  10. Yeah I've been watching his videos, and Grim Reapers, and Spudknocker, and so on lol! Take off and landing the Viper went pretty smoothly. Tried refueling.... let's just say the KC became gun practice [emoji32] holy crap that's hard. Working on navigating steer points and unguided bombing at the moment. The MFD's can be quite intimidating with all their sub menu's. That's why I initially came here, I figured I forgot to arm something, set a switch, who knows. I spent 2 hours flying around trying to just drop a bomb off the pylon, only to figure out I needed profile 2 in the MFD rather than profile 1 [emoji23] Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
  11. Yes sir! I clicked on the training tab and saw there's one for cold start and one for take off and I did my best Paul Rudd - Antman "oh boy" impression, as I got to Googling. I'm reading through the guides as we speak. This is my first full fledged military simulator. Previously played things like Ace Combat and such and it's quite a big leap from that, to this. 12. Found the button, managed to lock on and bag a couple Su-27's [emoji16] I've got a lot to learn though. But, very excited to do so. Thank you for your help. Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
  13. Yup! Literally just found it. I'm very new to this. Didn't even know there was one [emoji23] Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk

  15. I've watched a bunch. Didn't catch anyone saying which button they're pushing to designate. I made this single thread for my single questions. Anyone not wanting to waste their time can then easily scroll past without answering. Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
  16. Nope. I wasn't. I didn't know which button it was. On the FC3 planes it's a press of the hat that finds the target but not in the Viper. Now that I know what it's called, I can look up which it is lol. Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
  17. Ok, so. First off, I'm new. Just started flying a week or so ago and I have lots of questions that I'll ask here so I don't clutter up other threads. I flew the FC3 Flankers and BVR combat was pretty simple. Select long range missile, move the square over the contact, press, and lock. I see the target on my left MFD in the F-16, I move my cursor over the target, but I can't seem to lock the target with the AIM-120 selected. Master arm is on, I'm in A-A mode, what am I missing, (warthog hotas) More questions to follow.... Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
  18. Oculus Rift S controller works perfectly. I do everything with the HOTAS and one Rift controller. Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk

Which setting controls the picture outside of the cockpit? My Tomcat looks gorgeous inside, but outside buildings and planes don't look nearly as good when I'm on the ground and fairly close by. Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
  20. The Oculus touch controller works great. Very happy with it. So today I did carrier and navigation training, which had it's ups and downs lol. Carrier takeoff, no problem. Carrier landing was a lot harder than the SU-33. I felt like the green boxes got me too far to the right of the glide path. When I steered inside of them, I landed just fine. The DLC control works great. Navigation.... Oh Jester.... Followed the training to the letter, except "someone" forgot to close the canopy, so we did it in a convertible lol. Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
  21. It wasn't any of that. The toe brakes were "stuck on" after release. Now that I've changed the settings on my pedals she rolls just like she should. Smooth as butter. Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
  22. I'm nowhere near ready to fight anyone yet lol. I still haven't figured out how to turn on the RWR lmao. Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
  23. Holy crap! Is a good start. What an amazing plane. Just started DCS last week, got FC3 and mainly flew the SU-33 around. I built a computer for DCS with VR in mind. Ryzen 5 3600 32 gigs of 3200 ram Radeon 5700 xt Oculus rift S Enter the Tomcat. After a lot of hours of searching on here I found some settings that work great. The cockpit in VR is INCREDIBLE. Can I sharpen up the outside world? What setting controls that? I was annoyed that I had to keep reaching my keyboard for ground ops and the mouse to hit switches.... Enter the oculus "hand" lol. I have it now I can do the complete startup without touching anything but my HOTAS and one of the "hands". I set the ejection seat arming to a switch on my HOTAS so I don't have to contort myself and the rest the "hand" can easily reach. Moving the wing sweep lever was tricky, but I figured it out. I've practiced startups, taxiing, takeoff, landing, (on land) and that all went pretty well. Excited to start carrier and combat training. Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
  24. Funny you mentioned that. I was just looking down into the cockpit as I was taxiing and I just happened to notice that when I use my toe brakes, they don't release when I come off them. So I set my wheel brakes to the joystick pinky lever, and sure enough, they released all the way, and the Cat rolls like it should. Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
  25. Bought the Tomcat yesterday, is it supposed to taxi like I'm dragging the Nimitz behind me? I disengage the parking brake and it just won't roll normally. Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
