7800X3D, 7900X3D, 7950X3D..
Hoirtel replied to EightyDuce's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
What will be interesting is the 7900X3D with the non vcache CCD disabled, running as a six core. Maybe it will have more thermal room but I would worry that might not be enough for a modern system to run DCS, windows and any add-on apps without potential compromise. I also heard that AMD might be hold the clocks down on the 7800X3D even further to keep the 7950X3D ahead, I would assume the 7900X3D would slot in the middle. -

I hope that a DCS player has managed to get one of the 7950X3Ds, and is happy to post results here! -

Well, I have a i9900KS so really was expecting to replace everything, I have a 64Gb Cl18, 3600 kit so not super high end for DDR4. DCS is what my PC is for really, yeah I do other stuff but its not that important, its not like the 7800X3D won't do anything else... 13th gen i7 and D4 mobo is the cheaper option for me but whatever I get will end up in new case probably with 4090/ti down the line. I probably just need to be patient and wait. The reviews have convinced me that the dual CCD chips are just not a good idea for me, using xbox game bar and keeping to balanced power mode is a compromise to get this thing to work correctly, I could see me shutting off that other CCD, total waste of money. 7800X3D is the gamer specialist CPU. 7950X3D just went on sale here, and they are out of stock! 7900X3D is still there, I don't think that's going to be popular... Yeah this is what I hang onto, its a different thing for VR. Not so much extra max or average FPS but cleaner, consistent timings with higher lows. I heard the 5800X3D really heklps with ground stutter, which isn't something FPS rates really show but a huge difference in game. -

Dunno. I'm thinking of throwing in the towel at this late stage, save myself some money and get a Z790/i7 or maybe even an i9 stick my 64gb DDR4 and likely enjoy much the same performance. -

Seems AMD didn't send it out to reviewers. Someone will get one for review but it won't be until tomorrow or next day. I think it will be the worst buy of the three. -

Seems the 7950X3D with non vcache CCD disabled is likely the fastest, so 7800X3D is going to actually be the best. Also they say that to run to the 7950 in games it uses windows game mode to identify which CCD to use... Uhh isn't that what we all disable to get better performance? So that means the 7800x3d or a hobbled 7950x3d will be the best for DCS. Damn AMD holding it back for five weeks. Meh. -
Help With VR and computer specs
Hoirtel replied to Shrive81's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Your current system sounds good, new system sounds great. I don't think going from a 12thgen i7 to 13gen i7 would make a huge difference, however the GPU gains do seem to be quite good. Usually a level upgrade from one gen to next is only marginal improvement. I always give it a few generations before doing that. I enjoy VR now on 3090, 64gb and i9 9900k, which is fine but chip now needs upgrade,.which is in planning. You may well get a lot of improvement with PC optimisation, reduce background applications as much as you can, ensure temps are good and hardware does not throttle etc. This can make massive difference. -

I can't see multithreading making a huge difference to the requirements. The last announcement said the first implementation would use two threads. I think the 7800X3D will be the one to go for for just DCS, and the 7950X3D for DCS and any productivity/creativity work. If a multi threaded DCS was to use one thread on each CCD there would likely be problems with latency. Would DCS really use 128Gb RAM? I can't get my system to use over 32... 128 would come with some perf penalties too. -

Yeah all I can see is 64GB cl40. However I recently got 64 for my current system (DRR4) and everytime I check it's not over 29gb used... That was also on grayflag. I really do need to see if I can record ram use as I am not convinced I need 64... -

So very quiet on the news about these chips considering they come out next week. I am agonising about RAM to buy, have to wait for tests. Seems AM5 is very picky but I bet that the vcache will not be as bad. Do I get that decent 32gb or a slower hynix 64gb kit. Hmmmm. -
DDR5 prices in steady free fall...

Yes I have heard about secondary timings with DDR5. Thanks for the links, not bought my RAM yet, but looks like I will have to take 32Gb if I want to get a decent kit. Nothing 64Gb/6000mhz available here yet that isnt CL40. That will have to be an upgrade down the line. Although I recently got 64 for my DDR4 system and DCS doesn't use it so maybe not an issue anyway. -

First glimpse. Salt required.... but looking good. Only last few minutes are related to X3D. -
It makes sense as its Friday and that's newsletter day, just odd that we get pre order dates at all. There are no wins there - just post when ready? The history is that generally there are always release delays which can be disappointing. I always wondered why they didn't just get it ready for release, then post a date X days in the future and sit on it, maybe software don't work like that...

So looking at motherboard prices I think that a B650E that has PBO should be plenty for even a 7950X3D. I do quite like gigabyte boards but thinking maybe a Strix B650E-F this time. Can't see why a X670 is necessary... -

Thanks, I will keep my eye on what's around, just looking at the two major UK retailers there are no 64gb kits lower than CL40... But when I get to actually buy I may have more options and Amazon might be a better bet. Another thing that I heard is that secondary timings are really important with DDR5 and I have seen some 32gb kits with low CAS but then higher secondary timings. Is it the secondary timings that can indicate the quality/vendor of the memory chips? There are quite a few good looking Corsair kits but I heard these use only micron which doesn't seem to be in high regard. I wasn't anning on overclocking myself, but I guess I would if there was some perf to be had. I think these micron kits have no headroom but if they are good to start with then why would I avoid these? -

Yeah not sure if I can get a 64GB kit with that latency over here but it's changing fairly quickly. At this point I guess I am going AMD X3D so 6000 will be fine. If that turns out to be inferior then I'll be going 13th gen and will want much higher speed. I will also be mildly annoyed as could have bought this already! -

Thanks, I think I wrote the question a bit badly, basically what seems to be available is decent 32gb kits, and not so good 64gb kits. What would be a the priority? -
DDR5 prices in steady free fall...
Hoirtel replied to EightyDuce's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
For a new DDR5 build (just for DCS) what would be the priority? lower speed+ higher latency and 64Gb or higher speed lower latency 32Gb. As noted in this thread the DDR5 scene is changing now and there is a quite a few 64Gb kits for sale albeit slower. I personally am starting to think that 32gb is enough. I recently bought a 64Gb DDR4 kit to upgrade my current PC, never seen it go above the high twenties. No change in performance at all. I have tried this on large MP missions etc. Would be interested to know if anyone has any experience of their system actually using more than 32Gb. Maybe because I have 24Gb VRAM... -
So the long press will always designate T0. I tend to think of this as the quick system designated target point as it really can only be done like this and will be overwritten on next long press. I must admit I haven't used the CAS page enough recently. Something I keep meaning to go back and train on. I mostly use store targetpoints using the TOO button on the UFC. Press TDC depress only and then quickly store these as TOOs for later recall or JDAM ripple. Using the wypt Inc long and switching to target points means you can cycle through them press the designate button on the MFD and get straight back on it. This way of working can make for very quick multi weapon deployment.
-
So without seeing what you are doing, it's difficult to know but when you press data on ESHD you are entering a data update/change mode so cycling through the ODU options is for editing points. If you are in wypt selection and want to start cycling through targetpoints you need to long press wypt increment and then went wypt mrkpoint and tpoint appear on ODU press target point (or whatever you are after) and then use short press wypt increment to move off currently selected wypt onto the targets points. Continual presses of wypt increment now will cycle through your target points only. Same process for changing between any of the points.

We are in the same position. I actually do PC productivity work but my current PC was still going to perform this task, the new machine was going to be DCS only. Also not sure about the scheduler and I guess we wouldn't know how this works for DCS specifically until someone tries it... -

Hmm. That also means it should have more cache per core? It might also be a better performer thermally. The reviews are going to be really important. -

Hmmm. But then it would have less vcache cores than the 7800X3D... -

Yeah I guess so but all the other release they brought out three skus at a time... I know how you feel about waiting.. Most of my parts are still cash. Just on the unlikely off chance things go sideways and I have to go 13th gen... Didn't know that, fair enough. Personally I wouldn't rule the extra to have it early and have a bit for productivity on the side but I worry the scheduler won't be up to the task and the perf will be down in dcs compared to 7800. Time will tell.
