Looking for feedback on a potential build
Bossco82 replied to Oddball52's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Hi Oddball, Your choices all look sound to me. Regarding the Nvme M2 drives. There is not much difference in Gen3 Vs Gen4 when it comes to DCS. I have only DCS installed on a Sabrent Gen 3. The peak read speed I have seen so far is about 1550mb. The drive can go up to about 2850mb. One other thing just make sure you have enough usb connectors for everything you need. Best of luck mate. -
Want to play 1440p max settings good Frame Times
Bossco82 replied to jasonbirder's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Hi Peter sure no problem... Its a AMD 5600x, PBO enabled using +150mhz and slightly tweaked manual stock limits with a curve optimiser undervolt of -15. I am back to cooling this with an AIO but you can use a simple air cooler. MSi X570 Gaming Edge Wifi G.Skill DDR4 3200Mhz C14 Trident Z RGB 2x Sabrent Nvme drives AMD 6800xt LG 32" Freesync 1440p HDR10 monitor. It all pretty much looks after itself, I run with freesync enabled but cap it to 60fps using Radeon framerate control. -
Thanks Scotch, Very helpful thing to know. Thinking about it this became more noticeable when I started using the NG version of the campaigns.

Hi, Anyone having trouble with the Harm Agm-88c using Too mode. I flew a few missions in a DCE campaign, sead in the Persian gulf. I get a Too lock on an active sam that is tracking my plane on the rwr, hawk, sa6 or sa2. Any harm fired using Too just fly by and don't pitch down. I had this working fine a few months ago. Am I doing something wrong or is this a bug?

Looking for feedback on a potential build
Bossco82 replied to Oddball52's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
HI Oddball, love the avatar! great film. I play DCS at 1440p using the settings in the screen shot below.... I have that LG 1440p monitor, LG 32QN600-B I love it. I also down graded from 4k and I still love it. I dont feel like I am missing out at all. Straight off the bat if you want a good experience at high setting using 4k in DCS as DCS is now. (I know Vulkan is planned but its not here yet). You will need a Nvidia 3080/3080ti or a 3090. Nothing else will do it without screwing about tuning graphics settings. AMD graphic cards have a limitation at this resolution. I use an AMD 5600x/ X570 MSI Gaming Edge/ Gskill DDR4 3200Mhz C14, 32gb/ AMD 6800XT, freesync works perfect with this at 1440p/ 2 separate Nvme 1tb drives, 1 is OS the other my flight sims. That is all using Win 10 pro. For cooling something as cheap as the Vetroo V5 air cooler will be fine or go upto a 240 AIO. Bear in mind if you go Intel they run hotter so get an AIO. With Intel in mind you could go 12600k/Z690 DDR4 mobo/32gb 3200Mhz C14-16 DDR4/Nvidia 3070 or upwards/ Nvme drives to suit your needs. I will add that a 6800xt with a dedicated 1440p Freesync monitor while using the Radeon Target framerate control has given me the best DCS experience with Track IR I have had so far. Its close to flawless. However if I wanted to go up a stage to 4k it would be a 3080ti or nothing. So I am sticking with my 6800xt at 1440p on a 32" monitor. -
INPUT please... How does this build look?
Bossco82 replied to dooom's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Yeah I agree with all of the above there. Basically you want to get a PSU purchase correct, your system relies on that. Regardless of whether its gold or platinum, check a reputable review first. If its good then buy it, I dont think the brand or efficiency rating is any guarantee of a quality unit to be honest. An internet search and a little reading up can go a long way to save you a headache later on down the line... -
Saitek Rhino X55 HOTAS in Windows 11
Bossco82 replied to MonsterZero's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Get the software from Logitech. When I tried Win 11 it worked just fine. I went back to win 10 due to the AMD performance issues. I have a copy of the software if you have trouble finding it. -
Like Lucshep stated. For up to 1440p the AMD card will be better and faster in DCS. However for some reason, (I personally suspect memory bus width), The Nvidia card will be better at higher resolution or if your using a multi monitor setup. I know I tried to play DCS at 4k using a 6800xt. It was ok but too many random stutter when flying low level or landing. So I switched to 1440p a resolution that the 6800xt just excels at and its superior clock speed comes into play.

Want to play 1440p max settings good Frame Times
Bossco82 replied to jasonbirder's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Hi Jason, you can but only at 1440p really. AMD does not cope anywhere near as well at higher resolutions. I would also advise pairing it with a Freesync monitor. I am super happy with the 5600x/6800xt setup I have at the moment mainly because I have Freesync working so well now. If and I mean if, I do get the odd low level dip in fps I dont notice. If I was using V-sync I would properly notice and it would spoil the experience. Its odd because my 6800xt does perfectly for DCS ay 1440p using Freesync with a 60fps cap. It works better than my previous 2080ti. However my 2080ti coped slightly better at 4k, I can only presume this is the memory bandwidth. -

Hi Zeagle, you can exchange shadows=low and use MSAAx4 and AFx16. Thats how I run mine. -
DCS and SSD's - Build and Set up?
Bossco82 replied to jasonbirder's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Jason, thats how I have mine setup now. Gen 4 OS/programs, 2nd Gen 3 DCS only. -
HI Gorn, I am in a similar boat to you. I dont think its possible to put the PC to sleep and leave a mission open in DCS or any game for that matter. I stick to single player not multi player unless I know I have a free day. I got use to DCE campaigns as the mission are relatively short...ish. Then I got the knack of keeping the plane straight and level ad using time skip. I set the buttons for time skip to (speed up) and then (normal), that way if something changes or pops up I can react quickly. This is how I still have a mission or two on DCS when I am short on time.

DCS and SSD's - Build and Set up?
Bossco82 replied to jasonbirder's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Hi Jason, I looked into this quite a bit as I was also unsure what to do. I have a X570 with 2x M2 Nvme capable slots. I also already had a 1tb Sabrent Nvme Pciex4 Gen4 SSD. I used to have my OS and DCS installed on this single drive. DCS ran fast and fine on this setup. I sometimes upgrade PC's for friends/family/word of mouth and if I upgrade something. Sometimes, I get left with what I have taken out to keep or sell on eBay. So I first got a Crucial MX500 Sata type SSD. I transferred just DCS onto this drive to see if it made a difference. There was very little difference in game regarding looking around or changes in scenes. However the actual game loading and mission loading times were slower. Not by much but it was definitely about 30% slower. So the Gen 4 Nvme showed some advantage over a Sata MX500 Then just before Xmas I upgraded a 1tb Sabrent M2 Nvme Pciex4 Gen3 to a 4tb drive for a friend of mine. He offered me the 1tb Gen3 drive for a steal of a price with the heatsink so I had it for my system. So now I transferred only DCS onto this Sabrent Gen3 Nvme. There is no difference what so ever at all regarding Gen3 vs Gen4 and DCS loading etc. Watching HW monitor and also knowing only DCS was on that drive in a month the highest recorded read speed has been 1550mb per/s. So there you go Gen3 vs Gen4 no difference. Nvme vs Sata SSD, small difference for loading only. If you have DCS and Windows OS on a Gen4 Nvme the drive is so fast you wont notice any other drive access by the Windows OS. The only advantage to having DCS on a separate installs when your talking about Nvme drives is in case the OS somehow gets corrupted, you wont need to download/install DCS again. I hope that answers your question mate because I was unsure of the same thing. -

I use G Skill 3200Mhz C14 with my AMD 5600x. It does perform really well with AMD. If you can find a good example of one of those kits 2nd hand it would be a good find. However like Lucshep says if budget is an issue and your in a rush to get it all built I have used something like Crucial 3200Mhz C16 will be fine. Try keeping an eye out though. The G.Skill kits are Samsung B.die and they do pop up used especially now some people are on the hunt for DDR5. -
Is my Seasonic Tx-850W going bad? Shutdown once
Bossco82 replied to sew333's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Hi Sew333, If its playing on your mind that much and the PSU is still under warranty then open a RMA ticket with Seasonic. If it helps I run a Corsair TX850m PSU and it has had no problems powering my system. Its quiet too. -
Is my Seasonic Tx-850W going bad? Shutdown once
Bossco82 replied to sew333's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Sew333, I honestly don't know. It's a guess but you said the computer was under load while it was loading Metro Exodus. I have not done any extreme over clocking in years. When I did I had shut downs without a restart caused by instability. A split second power outage could have caused similar. I cannot say for 100% though mate. If it's working now I would just keep an eye on it. If your still ok in a couple of weeks. Seriously mate, just forget about it. I would if it was mine. -

Bossco82 replied to sew333's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Ok, I hear what your saying. However ask yourself. Were you looking at the laptop, router and PC all at the same time when this happened? A split second interruption in the main power of your home would be all it would take to shut your PC down, especially if it was loading a game at the time. Your laptop and router probably just didn't show the problem. You either had a split second drop in mains power. Or, you have a strange short in your PC. Or a growing temp problem your not noticing yet. If it's all working fine now, my bet is it was a split second power cut/drop out. It fits everything your describing to be honest. -
Is my Seasonic Tx-850W going bad? Shutdown once
Bossco82 replied to sew333's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Hi Sew333, If your monitor was constantly flickering for ages after I would work out what that is. If its just a short flicker 10 seconds after a shutdown, that is probably just a small signal left over as you shut down. I cant be sure without physically seeing the system. My best guess dont worry about it. As for your main problem, again if this has only happened once. I would not worry about it too much. If that happened to me I would have already just kept a mental note for future reference. That would have to happen a few times in a row within a week for me to go digging around searching for a problem. Its easy to worry when its your own system. Really though some time has past now, you probably will never know for sure. It really could just have been a random one off. If you really are worried, there are two things to try. Go through your system and carefully check your power connections. Check they are properly connected and for things like excess dust etc. Check them for tension, has one got pinched by the back panel of the case etc. Its easily done. Secondly if they are cheap in your country get a watt meter for the plug, check the system is using the power it is suppose to, helps to problem solve,,, sometimes. Finally keep an eye on your temps, things like all the GPU temps, hotspot and memory. Dont stress about it too much just keep an eye. -

I have a 5600x, 32gb DDR4 3200/C14 and a 6800xt, I use these settings for rock solid 60fps everywhere down low with a Track IR. -
Buying a pre built PC to get hold of a graphics card is an option a few people are going for. This is a thing.

I have tested a 3080ti on my own Corsair TX850m. It worked perfectly fine however that was in my X570 system fitted with an undervolted 5600x. If you are worried about the PSU just upgrade it as it is not worth the headache if there is a problem. 850w is enough just make sure its a proper quality unit that gets fitted. Then like Lucshep says make sure its wired up correctly. -
Hi Caldera, I can confirm that Lucshep really knows what he is on about with regards DCS and how it will use up your system resources. I would simply be repeating what he said. To help put this into perspective. I use a 6800xt at 1440p with a 60fps cap on a Freesync monitor. I use these settings and see my Vram go upto an average of 14500mb usage in Radeon overlay. DCS will use what is available but it is dependent on the memory speed too. DSC aircraft spotting is easier at lower resolution, I have a TV to try 4k on, any aircraft are much harder to spot. I find 1440p a great balance between visual sharpness, performance and playability. Finally if you plan to buy a 3080ti then all your worries about performance are pretty much out of the window. I have had the privileged of checking a 3080ti out and it performs pretty much perfect for DCS using 1440p and 60fps butter smooth. I bet it would be perfect for 4k too. Much better than my current 6800xt and my previous 2080ti.

HI Caldera, While resolution will have a small effect on the Vram required for DCS. The texture settings in DCS graphics section will have the most impact. The amount of Vram "IN USE" will also fluctuate as you move around the map of the game, but not that much. The numbers you posted make sense regardless of the resolution or if your using the 2nd monitor or not. Your using about 5gb of Vram on average and the whole amount is in the allocated section. What I do see is that your GPU is running at maximum usage in some of those screenshots. So I am guessing you are NOT using Vsync or a framerate cap. I can tell that to use DCS at 60fps with high settings at 3440x1440 resolution while also running a 2nd monitor you would want a 3070 minimum. Preferably a 3080 or even an AMD 6800xt. As for Vram its a good idea to have as much as you can really. 8gb of Vram is a good starting point. If you look on Youtube for video's by "PointBlank" he has some optimisation videos for DCS using 3440x1440 resolution.

I think VR users prefer Nvidia cards. If you can get a 6800xt or an Nvidia 3080. I own a 6800xt and it can max out 1440p if that helps.
