Hi Mate, Ok I have not used a proper G-sync monitor in years, I had an Acer when they first came out and it worked flawlessly, I remember it still looking smooth down to about 50fps. If it helps I am using a LG 1440p freesync monitor now, its a LG32QN600,its very good and the image quality, brightness and the Freesync is great for me. My rig is pretty much built for DCS though so I stick to 60fps. I think mine has a Freesync range of 48-75hz. As for your monitor stand, I have a similar problem with my desk but I use a monitor arm, its an Invision MX450 for up to 12kg, holds the monitor perfectly, the mobility of it means you can bring the monitor to you when flying. The cable management is a plus too. Finally if the store you bought it from is asking you to return it, you are probably doing the right thing. What you buy should be working correctly and not be loose in the frame/casing. Just think if you wanted to change your setup. If there is something wrong with the one you have you might struggle to sell it on in the future. Best of luck getting it all right.

To Archduke, When your 6900xt arrives try these for reference, works well with my 6800xt, I get a stable 60fps everywhere. I limit DCS to 60fps with the Frame rate target control in Radeon under graphics advanced settings. This is using a Freesync monitor. They also work well with Vsync enabled. Using 4k is ok too just without any MSAA enabled, that caused frame drops down to 40ish when flying low near lot of buildings, thats using native 4k resolution though.

Undervolting/underclocking RTX 3060
Bossco82 replied to scampaboy's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Regardless of the manufacturer I use MSI Afterburner to tune Nvidia cards. You can use the curve graph to set your clocks to voltage. You do also get two different temp readings, core and hotspot. Your ok for both I dont think they throttle unless they go into the high 80's or even low 90's. -
Hi Skatezilla, You know better than I do if I am wrong I'm wrong. At the time I was told TK didnt appreciate the modding community telling him how to run his own project. Not long after it all came to an end. Back then I was pretty much unknown to the community and involved in a project because of a shared historical interest rather than coding or game making. It involved a lot of texture work and knowledge of the Terrain Editors. Like yourself it was under another name. The impression given to me at the time was that the ongoing complaints from the modding community had played a part, that it was one of the reasons that contributed to the abrupt end. I was just going of what I was told at the time. Like I said, if that impression I was given is wrong, I stand corrected mate. I still think its a shame, if I had not got into the SF2 titles I probably would have never bothered looking into what DCS was about.
-
The danger here is if Ed and his team were to walk away from any development because the community it serves becomes an audience that cannot be satisfied and begins to tell them what to do with there project/product. On the flip side if the community becomes so disappointed they simply stop using the game/product. DCS has needed better hardware to achieve the same graphical settings over the past 18 months. Its great seeing all the DCS movies and scenes advertised but "IF" I say "IF" it takes something like a unicorn Nvidia 3080 to run it that is a slim market to appeal to. If anyone remembers Thirdwire, a great combat flight sim at the time that was open to modders to pretty much do what they wanted. Then came complaints about the engine and bugs until the community told TK how to do his job and manage his own project. In 2013 the updates simply stopped and the PC version just died. That last update for that was July 2013. It was a sad ending to something that in its day was excellent. Personally this was a situation caused by a community expecting EA Games level of support and options. From a small developer offering a product to a small and niche market. I know of a few that still play this and miss it being developed further. I was one of those modders that respected TK's limitations and tried to work around it. So I respect how much work it has to take to develop DCS, a game many times more complex. On the flip again. I sort out a gaming PC's for a few mates. One was into a hunting game by Expansive Worlds. Similar deal the core was free but you pay for the extra's. The extras kept coming but the core became more and more bugged with problems. He sank god knows into all the gear and was into that for a long while. However he simply walked away from it and stopped buying anymore. When they released a standalone pay for version in a new model he didnt bother either. I was never much into this but it came across as a developer expecting to wield the same kind of clout as someone like EA Games. While catering for a relatively niche market that could simply go elsewhere. There is a delicate balance of mutual respect for both the developer and end user of anything like this. I respect that an undertaking like Vulkan is an epic job when you consider how many modules have to be checked and double checked. Just stand back at look at the coding and time that must go into creating DCS. Look at a map like Syria, thats an amazing amount of detail. Trying to balance the detail vs the performance cannot be anything but a headache. At the same time I hope the developer respects that I as the end user have invested a lot into being able to enjoy the game and its modules. Financially purchasing hardware and time to learn, DCS is not a light casual game. To think I could cut the power of my PC in half and play my entire Steam folder on high settings happily. My PC is built for DCS like many others on here. If an update comes along and I am turning my settings down and down again to accommodate the changes. Eventually I will reach a point where I question if I want to invest anymore, especially with hardware prices now. As for paying what was it an extra $10 for the A-10 update, personally that did not bother me at all. I did not have to buy it and the existing campaigns worked with both. I think introducing a subscription system after end users have already purchased sets of modules that can add up to several hundred of dollars would for want of a better way of putting it, be seen as "blackmail" by some people. Like I said that is an extreme way of putting it. Its only my opinion, like you said something like that would have to be considered before being implemented. I am only speaking for myself. That would be a move that would certainly make me stop and think how much playing DCS was worth it. At the end of the day I really appreciate that DCS exists, there is not much else quite like it right now. I think Ed and the team do a fantastic job and that apart from a little optimisation in some of the map areas in The Channel and Syria its not too far from being at a bit of a sweet spot. If Vulkan was to happen I think that would be great too, but I hope they take the time thats needed to do it right. Things can always be better but sometimes if its not "too" broke dont fix it.
-
Um.... I see your point, I really do. However if DCS was to switch to a subscription for the core after the amount of money I have paid for modules I would be quite angry. You buy something in confidence it will be updated. I think a few users on here would simply walk away. It would be great to see the graphics engine of DCS transferred to something like Vulcan over DX11 but looking at what DCS is actually doing the job must be massive

I run a X56 Hotas setup. I keep a backup from the input config. The process I use is a bit of a work around. If for some reason like a re-install of Windows I lose my DCS controls. All that has happened is that my controllers address has changed. So I go and set just the axis for one plane in DCS and that generates a new controls config with the new address in the file name. Then its simply a copy & paste effort with a quick check afterwards.

Hello mate, Something to help with finding problem with "hardware" like your monitor. If its working for one game and not in another. You problem is a setting in the "software" Since this is seems to be a DCS specific problem and if your running a max frame rate cap of 60fps in the NVCP. You need to check that is actually being produced in DCS itself. So check another game you play regularly and see if your hardware is working, if it is then tick a box. Its not the hardware. So if its software check DCS is performing at a framerate of 60fps and a frametime of 16ms. This is the amount you need to not get the stutters your reporting with Track IR. Download and install MSI Afterburner, it comes with Rivatuner. In Rivatuner check the boxes in the settings to select your CPU/GPU/Dram and framerate and frametime in the overlay display. After that go in to DCS and check these values in game. FPS counters can still report 60fps while your frametime can be just outside 16ms, causing stutter. If something like your GPU usage is at 95+% that could also be the problem. Looking at your settings for DCS thats about on the limit of what a RTX 2060 can cope with even at 1080p. What gave me the clue is your reporting the problem is over downtown Vegas and on the runway at Nellis, populated areas. DCS has had a few updates that has effected performance lately. You couls also try shadows on low, they are real fps killers. I have a AMD 6800xt, no slouch and I use shadows on low. Seriously though try MSI Afterburner to properly check in game performance, really helps for problem solving. You may be finding a compatibility issue with Gsync as its being used with a Freesync monitor. If you numbers in DCS are 60fps with a 16ms frametime, then it could be that.

New CPU for Christmas.. which one?
Bossco82 replied to Gogojuice's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I have the 5600x in a X570 motherboard. No problems or bottlenecks in DCS, I have a 6800xt now but I had a 2080ti until June 2021. Ran just fine for me. If your in the UK I think Scan have a Xmas sale on both. -
When I was going through a similar problem I had rock solid performance on an old 1080p Sony TV locked at 60hz with an old HDMi cable than my new 1440p freesync gaming monitor and a brand new fancy DP or HDMi cable. I was literally pulling my hair out, I had all the latest kit and it wouldn't work. One setting in Radeon was the key, the moment I turned it on, no problems just a little tweaking. Its only my two cents but try this.... Turn on Freesync in the monitors settings, if you have a response time setting set it to the middle one. Mine an "LG" has normal, fast and faster or OFF. I set mine to fast for my system. In Nvidia control panel, turn on VRR technology, Then in the settings for DCS set a frame cap of 60. There is a setting in that list somewhere but I have not had Nvidia since June. So I cant check for you. In Windows graphic settings make sure VRR is enabled. In DCS turn off Vsync. Download and install MSI Afterburner, set the overlay to check Framerate and Frame time. 60fps should have a frametime of 16ms. Run an instant action freeflight mission and just check if both the frametime 16ms and the framerate 60fps are correct. Im having to guess some of this because its Nvidia and I have Radeon right now. This was the checklist I made a note of in case mine went funny again. The best scenario I have found for myself is this. Leave the monitor in VRR. Leave Windows in VRR. Set your GPU's controlling software to cap at 60. Leave your games Vsync = off then let Track IR run in the backdround. This is the best way to get a stutter free Track IR experience while using a VRR monitor. Some might say why cap to 60fps instead of lock it to Vsync. If you have a fps dip with Vsync it will halve to 30fps all of a sudden. With the VRR enabled its simply not as noticeable if you have a dip to say 48fps for a few seconds. Running a 60fps cap for me eliminates any tearing when panning the view, that is what I found personally. One final thing. On the Track IR window in the top left is a spanner icon. Click that and try setting, "Automatically minimize ON Track IR Enhanced Title Launch". I have better Track IR performance with this NOT enabled. Best of luck mate, if I can help any further feel free to reply to this or PM me.

HI mtpiperpilot, I had exactly the same problem as your having but with my AMD 6800xt and Radeon software paired with a proper Freesync monitor. Took me days to work it out. In the end in the sub menu of Radeon I found a seting called "frame rate target control", its can be set at any number. However, disabling V-sync in DCS and enabling this "FRTC" in Radeon and setting it to 60fps got rid of any Track IR tearing and now its butter smooth again. Like you I had gone from a fixed 60hz monitor where I had to use V-sync and upgraded to a Freesync monitor. For the first couple of days it was like going backwards until I found that one setting in Radeon. I know this is about AMD Freesync not Nvidia and Gsync but its was just to share that finding that one setting configuration can be a night and day moment.

RX 6800 XT display port seems to have quit
Bossco82 replied to Allentc2's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Ok, mine is the MSI Gaming version, how old is the 6800xt? Is it under warranty? If it was me I would want to confirm if all the outputs on the GPU were working. Possibly try to re-install the driver for the GPU including using AMD driver cleaner or DDU. Something might have been corrupted. After that try playing DCS on the monitor just to check for "choppyness". I am not familiar enough with VR to know how the settings might effect this. However I would check everything on the monitor after a driver reset. -
RX 6800 XT display port seems to have quit
Bossco82 replied to Allentc2's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
If it anything like my 6800xt it has 1x DP and 3x HDMi, Is it possible to test the GPU's DP port connected to a monitor instead of a VR headset unit? Only way to really know for sure which has the problem. You really have to test to see if changing the cable has physically damaged the GPU's display port in some way. Either by being out of shape slightly, not sure. Was everything powered on when you changed the cable, could it have arced against the case? -
Yeah I have only ever flown single player, mainly DCE campaigns. I keep meaning to try multiplayer but just haven't got around to it. However I have never measured my fps in DCS with flying at altitude. I always checked what it is down low over somewhere like Dubai etc. Then I know it will probably be fine anywhere else. I made that mistake when I thought I could run a 4k panel. Everything was fine when doing an air start mission, coming into land became a stutter zone with dips into the 40's. Its the main reason I downgraded to 1440p.
-
That is true, 4k with MSAAx4, SSAO and SSLR looks amazing. Takes a 3080ti to achieve it though. I found my 6800xt definitely cant do it and a 3080 will get the fps jitters if your down low over Syria or near Dubai for example. I'm using 1440p with 4xMSAA with SSAO and that looks really good in my opinion. Again though when down low that pushes my 6800xt into 90% usage at times. Even if NOR was available to the public, I am only guessing but I imagine you would need to go to the Nvidia counter nearby and buy a GPU capable of running it.
-
In the past year I have had my hands on a AMD 6800xt, and a Nvidia 2080ti, 3080 and a 3080ti. Not for my own rig I have fitted these for friends etc. So I am talking from experience. A Nvidia 3090 as of today is the king of the GPU's especially for flight simulators like DCS and MSFS. A 3080ti comes very close to the 3090 in FPS games, in some I think its slightly ahead. However a 3090 vs a 3080 it would be no contest in DCS 3090 would win hands down. Flight sims do need the raw processing power of a GPU, they also benefit from larger memory bus width and larger and faster Vram. These higher quality terrains take a lot of rendering etc. Dont kid yourself when buying a GPU for DCS or MSFS, buy the correct one for the resolution you want to use and buy the right one once. Especially when you consider today market.

No worries mate, I found it by total accident. Simply had a free hour to play about with it. Agreed flying downtown in Dubai the sliders dont have so much effect. Same for being low amongst trees in the Caucuses. However in the Channel and Syria map I noticed it improve the fps a lot without losing the detail too much. If I set those to full ie, 1. I get around 55-62fps with my 6800xt and its running in the 90%+ zone too. If I set them to 0.6-0.75 I get a stable 60fps and my 6800xt is working around 75-85%. There is a train attack mission for the P-51 over the Channel, seems to be a good benchmark to use for performance.
-
Yeah I can see your point with that. I'm running 1440p resolution and I had my 6800xt running at over 90% while circling low over the cliffs and town area's. That area puts a little more stress on the GPU than Syria. Something to try though as I experimented with this. The buildings detail slider, turning that down to 0.6 did not effect the visuals too much at all. However my GPU usage went down to around 70%. You can adjust those slider "on the fly" while in the mission/game.

I just bought the Channel Map in the sale today. As someone who has enjoyed the south of England often. This is a brilliant addition to my DCS collection. Flying along the coast in a P-51 or a Spitfire is just as much fun as being punched off the Supercarrier in the Tomcat. I genuinely just had a properly fun Sunday evening, first in ages. Even bagged a few 109's in the process.
-
Yeah I had a few goes this afternoon, tuning the axis on the X56 stick helped a lot. I got a lot of my WW2 kicks out of "Sturmovik", sorry "Ed" if your looking. However it is simply running like a dog on my AMD system at the moment. DCS is running like a dream, even better now the Radeon drivers are maturing a bit. Trying the WW2 birds on DCS its obvious you need a lot more thought going into how you handle the flight model. If I am honest I didn't like this at first at all. I missed my "get in it chick the stick around and shoot stuff down" experience. On the other hand, I actually got a 109 properly today and it was a much more rewarding experience. The Mossie and the Channel map are looking very tempting, just have to get the hang of this first.
-
I appreciate the content of this thread a lot. My December goal is to get better at the prop planes. I'm useless at the moment. Dropping the wing and stalling in the vertical regularly. Even though I can handle the Tomcat and do consistent carrier landing. These warbirds show up how heavy handed you can be with the stick!
-
I tested my mates EVGA Ftw 3080ti in my own system with DCS. It is a beast and knocks my 6800xt out the park regarding DCS. However with a quick undervolt and a 60fps cap. It didn't use much more electric or get too hot either. It ran about 65 degrees c overall. It only used a lot of juice if you ran it with no cap at 99%. The luxury was having the headroom to run 4k resolution and still fly very low without FPS drops.

New High-End Alder Lake PC Build - Advice Please
Bossco82 replied to obious's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Yeah the PC market is all over the place for sure. I realised I had made a mistake buying a 6800xt to run DCS at 4k. For some reason it just cant do that resolution in DCS well. In other times I would have just thought "stuff it" sold my 6800xt on eBay or similar and bought a 3080ti. Instead a mate of mine was selling a LG 1440p monitor after he got himself an OLED TV. I tried it out realised that DCS and all my other games still look really good at that resolution. SO I changed monitors. I think its the right way to go at the moment, instead of needing a bit more graphical grunt I have headroom instead. -
New FA18C TM Grip.... can't map buttons
Bossco82 replied to C_Dub73's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
It could be a controller address issue in DCS itself. Have you checked if the buttons work in the Windows controller properties? Is it showing up in Windows devices? -
New High-End Alder Lake PC Build - Advice Please
Bossco82 replied to obious's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I kind of agree with you there Csgo, I dont think we will see GPU prices like they were in 2019 for a couple of years at least. The way I see it if I swap out a GPU it costs me whatever it is minus what my previous is worth used. That is why I keep my stuff in the best condition I can and dont do crazy overclocks etc. So if the prices are up what I sell my old one for will be up. Swings and round abouts really.
