90 FPS, 45 FPS, 23 FPS...I don't see the difference

Recommended Posts

I don't know if it's me but regardless of whether I'm at 90 FPS, 45 FPS, 23 FPS there doesn't seem to be a noticeable difference. I know I must be missing something here because flight and graphics seem smooth regardless of what the DCS FPS reads.

Also, the FPS changes a lot in VR because of the constant view change while shifting your head.

Try flying low over some buildings at medium to high speed and look 90° left or right at the buildings. You should notice frame stutter then when at lower fps.

Will check it out...I think that's part of my point though. If in fact there is stutter it's less noticeable when using Rift because we focus on a smaller area at a time compared to my 3 monitor set up.

I have not noticed any difference between 90 and 45 yet either... have been very pleased with the Rift.

I nearly always notice slight stutter - usually when taking off or just after, when looking down at the trees below the aircraft it is most noticable. If I'm just looking out of the front of the canopy it isn't noticable.

But flying in helicopters a lot can make it stand out even more.

Earlier today during some video recorder beta testing (yes - VR recording direct from the Rift display is coming very soon ;) ) I noticed the FPS counter showing 17 as I was taking off and as soon as I got to about 2000m it steadied at mid 40's.

ASW switched off.

With my head in VR - it's the next best thing!

Fly the spitfire dogfight instant action mission. Do you see the enemy ghosting or blurred when the fps is lower than 45? I do but I have an old PC comparatively:)

Also since the latest 2 oculus patches it has become a lot smoother irrespective of FPS

Do you use this yet? Its a very useful tool and will help detect lost frames etc

This is a function of your HW spec. People on the lower end of the scale suffer more. Curious what your spec is.

I fly that same Spit mission a lot, and no do not see ghosting or blurred, it is very smooth. However whilst my fps do drop at times to the 45 fps ASW, I have never see them drop below that.

Yes I use that tool, mainly to disable power management on my Innatek USB 3.0 PCIe card at each boot.

I received my AlienWare Aurora R6 a few weeks ago.

It has:

i7700K 4.20 gig htz can be clocked to 4.40

850 watt power supply, liquid cooled

GTX 1080, 8gig vram

16 gig ram ddr4 [matched 16 gig on order]

SSD 256 pci-e

2 tb hard drive

And the rest...

Nice rig but a liquid cooled PSU seems excessive;)

To be honest I didn't select it...it came because of the the 'K' processor I believe.

BTW, anyone know a good tried and proven driver for X-52 Pro for Windows 10 and is there really an issue with it in a 3.0usb?

Yes. One SSD for the OS and support software, and one for DCS which leaves the 2TB drive for the normal accumulation of stuff.

Somehow, I ended up with 8TB for "accumulation" and two SSDs (512 for OS and 1TB for DCS. How mind boggling is that? My first "HardCard" (HD that was meant to be plugged into ISA or EISA slot) was a 10MB variety and I thought I was in HEAVEN. Then I got a 320MB Quantum drive several years later and I *knew* I was in heaven. I remember using PC Tools with floppy hole puncher to double the disc capacity while backing up the HD. Now my watch has 4GB LOL.

Good time to be in flight sim'ing. /* now back to tuning my MPCNC */

Whenever someone says they can't see differences in fps, especially on a scale like double and four times the base fps, I have one suggestion: snap roll as fast you can, preferably at least 360 to 720 degrees and watch the horizon. I have never enjoyed a refresh rate higher than 85 Hz (what my old CRT did), but I could see big differences between 30/60/90 fps while rolling fast. 40-50 fps is the lowest usable fps for me. A smooth 30 looks pretty good, but if you are in a dogfight, it isn't good enough for precision gunnery. I can live with the 60 Hz limit of my current LCD monitor (an old 46" 1080p LCD TV), but I would really like to see 120 Hz at 4K. I can't wait until the hardware capability and price allows me to see that happen.

My desktop machines just have the needed SSDs and 2TB drives for stuff. However, when I add up the drives in my NAS boxes plus the drives used to back them up, all told I have around 35TB in the house these days.

There are actually some files, here and there, that are nearly 20 years old!

EDIT: Tomorrow I will be receiving 2 more 1TB Caviar Blacks to be dedicated to system disk images.

Yes that's what I did, quite quick those boot-ups now.

Indeed. The first time I booted from an SSD (60GB), I was absolutely stunned. I think I still have that drive in a USB 3.0 external box, somewhere.

ASW switched off.

Hey Brixmis, curious about your experience disabling ASW. What differences have you noticed? (If there's a thread where this is already discussed in the context of DCS, please feel free to point me to it, I've been unable to find it.)

As an aside, I'll have a 1080Ti later today, switching from a 1080. So I'll post some initial performance comparisons when able.

yes - VR recording direct from the Rift display is coming very soon ;)

...

You had me at "VR recording direct". You've now managed to earn yourself an ED forum stalker.

Good question.

I'm looking forward to your comparison, I have a 1080. Are you going to do a Futuremark, 3dmark?
