whiteside Posted July 28, 2016 Posted July 28, 2016 Guys, I'm not positive that this is due to the F5 Module or not but I have numerous modules and when I activate the NWS the comm menu (Mapped to the / key) comes up. The next press clears it away. If I try to hit the / key on the keyboard, the comm menu wont come up. Any ideas? Thanks Will PS, I am not using the TARGET software. whiteside Posted July 29, 2016 Author Posted July 29, 2016 (edited) Same here I think. Yes, I have checked the mappings. Glad to see its not just me. I will retest Ground/Air. whiteside Posted July 29, 2016 Author Posted July 29, 2016 In Controls, I can press the TM WH Paddle switch on the bottom of the stick and it only brings up the NWS mapping, no comm menu. i9-9900K 3.6(Running at 5.0 GHZ) 32GB Memory 2x M.2 drives Win 10 64bit RTX 2080 Ti FTW3 Ultra OCULUS RIFT CV1 VKB Gunfighter 2 extended/TM Pedals/TM Warthog throttles.

Home Fries Posted July 29, 2016 Posted July 29, 2016 While I respect that this is how the aircraft works, could we please have an option to disable this feature? More than just keying a mic, this toggles the comm menu, which effectively disables our function keys unless we catch it. It also wreaks havoc with some controller profiles that use that button as a modifier (mine included). -Home Fries My DCS Files and Skins My DCS TARGET Profile for Cougar or Warthog and MFDs F-14B LANTIRN Guide

Shahdoh Posted July 30, 2016 Posted July 30, 2016 If this is truly the case, it needs to be NWS on the ground, and radio in flight, not both at all times. Tower might get a bit annoyed if you keyed mic just to activate NWS while taxiing around.... Other way around should not be quite so problematic, but could still create some issues.

Isn't this already the case for you? It is that way for me, meaning NWS while on the ground and radio while in the air. At first it was weird to me but now I actually quite like it! Shahdoh Posted July 30, 2016 Posted July 30, 2016 I do not have the problem ( I dont have the F5 yet), but have tried to help Whiteside troubleshoot his issue. He has the Oculus Rift, maybe its a VR thing that is causing the Comms menu to open up on the ground???
Mad-Mex Posted July 31, 2016 Posted July 31, 2016 And for what is the radio button on the throttle, if there is the NWS button? With 10 years experience as a USAF Crew Chief (ground crew, I changed to air traffic control in 1990) I can only speak of F-4D's, F-16A/B Block 5-25, T-38A's and early F-5's, the throttle mic button is the only way to activate the radios, the stick NWS button was wired to the NWS system, only way to change it to a MIC button would be to have a weight on wheels switch which would change the function and I don't ever recall ever getting a write up for stick mic button stuck or inop, which we would get for the throttle button.
Mad-Mex Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 (edited) With weight off wheels, regardless of gear position, the NWS switch acts as a backup mic switch. Per T.O. 1F-5E-1. I stand corrected, pg 61, "In flight - may be used as microphone button" I am willing to bet there is hundreds of former F-5 Mechanics know never knew this or have forgotten this since all the wright ups I remember getting for NWS were traced to either a bad switch or bad NWS steering actuator. Same with comms, stuck throttle mic or intermittent button. Edited August 1, 2016 by Mad-Mex

Well of course, it makes sense when you think about it: If the NWS switch dies, you'll never get off the ground to discover it wasn't working as a mic switch

beagleRampant Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 I just spent a good hour after purchasing the F-5 investigating this, thinking this was a bug in the controller setup, or possibly my Warthog TM being faulty. I now read here that it's a FEATURE?! But it's weird that the NWS is triggering the radio while you're on the ground. Oh well. You live and learn! Now to fly...
Fionn Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 It shouldn't trigger the radio on the ground, only in the air. I find it quite frustrating actually as I would like to use it on the ground as well. It would save me mapping the mic to another button!
