hannibal Posted January 28, 2008 Posted January 28, 2008 hi all. i am a helicopter enthusiast, spawned from playing battlefield vietnam and battlefield 2. for the most part i have been flexing my helicopter through a mouse/keyboard/xbox controller 's' setup. i wanted to go to the next level of flying which is to have full helo controls, (i.e. cyclic, collective, and rudder) i just completed my home made sim-pit people like pictures of course.. I like to know if there is any helicopter clubs to join, i would like to improve my helicopter combat flying skills, its taking me a lil more effort to use a cyclic and coordinate using the rudder and collective... but im sure in time i will be better in time, plus i like to fly with other helicopter pilots online! find me on steam! username: Hannibal_A101A http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197969447179
-sulan- Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 Wow!! Awesome build!! Looking really sweet me thinks!! :) I'm sure there will be or are squadrons planning to fly DCS, you should hook up with one that matches your timezone! It's a great way to get the most out of any simulator I think.. And with that control setup you'll be kicking ass!! Really cool!!
hannibal Posted January 29, 2008 Author Posted January 29, 2008 thanks... for the time being, do you know of any helicopters clubs to get involved with at least so i can practice flight ops and maneuvers? im starting to hate being noob-fied in bf2 servers because i dont fly so great yet with this full helicopter set up.. what do you use to fly? find me on steam! username: Hannibal_A101A http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197969447179
CAT_101st Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 Where do you live? and check out our thred here. I am tring to get a group together in the US West coast mostly. For the DCS series. If your in the UD drop me a PM. mabe we can figure somthing out. Keep in mind that the BF series flight modle will be way more forgiving than a true flight modle will. If you have ArmA, I am a member of the 31st MEU as a helo pilot. It is not that great of a flight modle but you will have me to fly with. http://31stmeu.spreebb.com/index.php? Check us out. HitchHikingFlatlander Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 Wow nice set up man, I hope you can explain the design for the floor mounted stick and give us more detail on how it works for you. Thats one of the most elusive parts of sim building, and building one is no easy task. Yeah I second Cat above too, if you live on the west coast were all sharing pit ideas and experience and will have some sort of helo group for BS. Feel free to add to the Pit Building group thread in this forum section too! http://dcs-mercenaries.com/ USA Squad
hannibal Posted January 29, 2008 Author Posted January 29, 2008 actually im from new york (east coast) the idea of the gimbal is quite easy, its the implementation that was difficult, and even more difficult when you dont have the means to fabricate. i made several attempts to make the inner gimbal, which was the hardest part, first attempt result in a assembly so heavy that i had to scrap it. ultimately i did it, i almost gave up at certain points, particually when i had to address the grinding of the inner gimbal shaft (solved with skateboard bearings @ 1$ each x 2) ...custom bearings where like 20$ each!!!!! anyways, i did it all with a hack saw, wood saw, various drivers and rachet scoket and a wet saw ( did not want to spend another 100$ on a wood saw) man if i had access to machine shop, my creation probably would have been 10 times more better... one point, i had to use a hand drill as a lathe, when modding a pipe to custom fit the pipe to incorporate the ch products combat stick F-16 type flight grip.. anyways, i did it...at some point, i like to make a custom collective....im not crazy about the ch product pro throttle design, but i have what i have... maybe soon i will make this collective..i definitly want to incorporate a "auto hover" switch and pot, where i can switch between the throttle pot which the control arm is attach to, and a pot that is almost like a trim, so that i can just switch to the trim pot set to what ever resistance require to allow the helicopter to hover..and switch to this pot when ever i want to hover...( i have to fight to hover in bf2) just thoughts...i like to hear yours! I WANT BLACK SHARK NOW!! (actually the KA-52 ALLIGATOR is better, i love the coop capability!!!!!!!!) (one seat is ok....TWO SEAT HELOZ RULZ! ! !) 1 find me on steam! username: Hannibal_A101A http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197969447179
CAT_101st Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 well just after BS is released 18 months latter we will have our AH64 2 seeter. Edit: As for the East cost deal no prob we can still play together. Hop you have a good connection. HitchHikingFlatlander Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 Well helo ops will be much different than BF2 or any arcade shooter. Helo sims are quite different than BF2 and I think you'll find that you have to learn how to fly all over again. I'm going out on a limb here as I dont own the title/s but I think you'd have a much better time flying EECH (Enemy Engaged) series. They're not full out sims from what I understand but I think they fit the sim-lite category. On another note, go New York Rangers/Knicks! I'm a die hard (any NYC team fan has to be lol) and hello to a fellow New Yorker, I'm from Brooklyn although California based now! http://dcs-mercenaries.com/ USA Squad
hannibal Posted January 29, 2008 Author Posted January 29, 2008 yea, i might have to give Enemy Engaged a try...so far i like Battlefield 2's helo physics...and believe me, just using the whole control set up is like learning how to fly again.... FSX helo physics are ok, Armed Assualt physics SUX, and i wasnt able to program hover correctly for the Front lines feul of war correctly ( althhough rotor physics are real nice!) what do you guys think about which game has the most authentic flight helo physics??? find me on steam! username: Hannibal_A101A http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197969447179
CAT_101st Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 since I have never ben in one I can't say. I have flown a few privet plains and one jet. but other than that I am limited to what the sim god's give me. I was once told that the day a helo leavs the asambly line it wants nuthing more than to kill the pilot.:helpsmilie: Unlike a airplain that loves to fly.:pilotfly: Home built PC Win 10 Pro 64bit, MB ASUS Z170 WS, 6700K, EVGA 1080Ti Hybrid, 32GB DDR4 3200, Thermaltake 120x360 RAD, Custom built A-10C sim pit, TM WARTHOG HOTAS, Cougar MFD's, 3D printed UFC and Saitek rudders. HitchHikingFlatlander Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 I cant stress enough the arcade FM in games like BF2 and ArmA. Flying a helo in BS, EECH will not even compare. http://dcs-mercenaries.com/ USA Squad
Me too! "It's not the years, honey. It's the mileage..."
rocketeer Posted February 1, 2008 Posted February 1, 2008 actually im from new york (east coast) if i ever fly to the east coast for my project work i'd want to visit your setup! man if i had access to machine shop, my creation probably would have been 10 times more better... here in the bay area there is a company called techshop. they conduct classses on various stuff, from basic electronics to mould making, use of CNC machines, how to bend metal etc. all kinds of skills. then you can pay $30 a day and use their CNC and various other tools that we normally can't afford to buy, ie. unlimited access to all tools and machines for a one day pass. they have a branch in the east coast. the closest one to NY is in north carolina. you can maybe check it out or look for a similar set up to rent some machine for a few hours. they have quite a stuff that i want to learn.
