Microsoft has released DirectX 12 and the transition is said to be fairly easy from DirectX 11. Is there a chance to see a move to DX12 in DCS World this year? Huge performance gain in much easier multi CPU support and functions closer to the hardware.

wouldn't that alienate anyone not running windows 8 or higher ?

If so I hope not? :P

I think "release" is a bit of an exhaggeration. It has been shown at a developer conference. :P

"Microsoft didn't give a specific date for DirectX 12-powered software, but estimated a "holiday 2015" window for games to ship using the API."

Depends on how easy it is to transition a renderer for it. There are games that ship with multiple render paths. However, this greatly depends on design; if you first design your game engine with a specific feature-set in mind, it can be very complicated to move it. But if you design for both, you can for example ship with both Dx9 and Dx11 render paths.

Or all three? DX12 seams available in MSDN.

OK a bit early to call it a release :P

Yeah, it was revealed, not released. :D

But yeah, nice to see that they're set to put up a fight against Mantle. But I'd be careful with listening to the hype.

Also, regarding multi-CPU, note that this only applies to the Dx-related code; that is, audio, video and input. In the case of DCS, the problem in the current version of DCS World is that the simulation engine and rendering engine runs in the same thread. Switching to DX12's featureset would in that case simply not do anything.

...but that's all a bit academic, since there is that new rendering engine being worked on. We'd have to see how that works out in release code before it's really useful to speculate about the gains possible from moving to Dx12.

Or that. Things will however depend on what the requirements for Dx12 are. The key reason why people ship games with both Dx9 and Dx11 is that they want some of the features of Dx11 (in some cases simply the increased performance), but also want to ensure that people running older versions of Windows or simply older hardware are able to run the game. If Dx12 ends up having only the same hardware requirements that Dx11 has, then it might be more relevant to have Dx9 and Dx12, with 11 omitted.

But with a timeframe of almost two years before we are to expect to see games using it, I suspect a lot of things can happen there. But do recall that key point: you don't only need support in OS. You need customer hardware to be compatible too.

Hopefully Microsoft won't leverage Dx12 in another vain attempt to push a new OS, but well... :P

OK OK. Don't go with DX12 just yet then, finish the DX11 development and release Nevada :D

No comment. :D

well first we kind of need dx12 GPUs

But that is the only way that they can sell OSs these days.

No, it's a wish!

I wish to see how they do with DX11 first. :)

Microsoft has released DirectX 12 and the transition is said to be fairly easy from DirectX 11. Is there a chance to see a move to DX12 in DCS World this year? Huge performance gain in much easier multi CPU support and functions closer to the hardware.

Source Polygon: http://www.polygon.com/2014/3/20/5530134/microsoft-directx-12-windows-pc-xbox-one-windows-phone

1. DirectX 12 isnt released yet, We have another 18 Months, and Another 7 Months Before the SDK is even Available

2. DirectX 12 is just a Low Level API, to Compete with AMD Mantle, Likely it's DX11 Restructured to Communicate to Directly to the hardware.

Like I Said AMD Went Low Level, OpenGL is also going low Level. it Makes Sense for DirectX to Go Low Level.

3. My info shows that DirectX12 will most likely be exclusive to Windows 9/Xbox One

4. AMD/nVidia confirmed DirectX 12 Will Run on Fermi, Kepler, and Maxwell, and GCN1.0, GCN1.1 GPUs.

(the Bad news is you'd have to wait for them to Mature their drivers, and both camps have issues with that stuff)

ED hasnt even released DX11/Edge yet and everyone wants them to throw it away for DX12 or AMD Mantle already?.

Yeesh, it's a good thing you guys dont run any software companies.

Lemme End that Pipe Dream right now for you:

1. Mantle isn't finished and none of the games using it run any better than DX11, you might get more FPS, but the Immature drivers cause problems on Mantle, so you trading off FPS for stability.

2. DirectX 12 is at least 3 Quarters away from having a SDK for Developers.

3. Most of the DirectX 12 Features they showed off at GDC Exist already in DX11,

Obviously not the new Low Level API, but Multiple GPU Support, Multiple Thread support for DirectX Functions, etc etc

OK, I will give MS Credit, I've seen slides of the Planned Multi-GPU Structure, No more Xfire/SLI Issues, Yes!

However everything else (Multi-Threaded Support for the DirectX Libraries and Call functions etc) already exist in DirectX11.

4. Low Level API is rumored to only have 10-15% Performance increase, but until I see docs, I'm calling it a gamble.

5. The transition to DX12 will prolly force people to Upgrade to Windows 9, which may or may not be a decent OS.

Did you not see the uproar over 32-bit being dropped, as well as XP and the Raise of Minimum Memory? You Drop Windows Vista, 7 and 8 to force people to use Windows9 for DX 12, people will bail left and right.

However to show I'm not pickin' on anyone,

If MS Makes it to where the EDGE Source Code can be loaded into the DX12 SDK, Modified and Re-Compiled in a matter of a few weeks/months at a low development cost to ED, without having to force users to upgrade from Windows 7, I'm all for having both options available. I'm pretty sure Vista doesnt have the WDDM Structure for DirectX12.

What he means is that he posted it in the DCS Wishlist section, but I moved it. ;)

(It is, however, still in the Wishlist section as a "moved" link, for two days.)
