I disagree with you there, Hans-Joachim.

IMO the Americans didn't lose 0:4 just because they played as a team. That and because their goalie played the game of his life and saved fifteen times (new record btw).

They didn't manage to hold Belgium at bay that long because they were lucky or because Belgium played bad, they just were good enough. Not good enough to win, but good enough to give the Belgians a run for their money.

And that's why I also think it was an epic game.

As for owning the field: The Japanese are known to have lost games despite 70% ball possession, the Germans are known to often have 60-70% and spend lots of time playing in their opponents part of the field, still they don't win every match with many goals (Actually they had ~60% in all three of their last games, and one of those even was a draw).

Playing for ball possession and trying to keep control is just a play style. When playing kick&rush (like England or some teams from the Balkans) you sacrifice ball possession and field control for less running and maybe faster counterattack. It doesn't mean you play worse, just different. Although it looks like it, I admit that.

I would go as far as to say the US team gave a valiant fight, be it one without much teamplay. For example, you'd have to agree that Yedlin played pretty much as an unguided rocket. I did like the Belgians remaining calm under pressure, without feeling the need to kick the bal away as far as possible when threatened. But that probably also says something about the difference in technical capabilities of the two teams. Maybe I'm just careful using the word epic. Edited by Hans-Joachim Marseille

Yeap. The media built it up as USA vs everyone else which might explain the epic comments all over the www. Yedlin...perhaps he thinks this is an audition for the European clubs? He's no where near the caliber it takes to be those men, and if they picked him up he'll be sitting on the bench for a long time. The past US team had a tendency to torpedo the ball across the field when threatened, and I guess that's their baby tactical habit. I'm sure people who did play football in their tween remember doing that when intimidated. :P Even if they had gotten pass Belgium, which nobody here thought they would, Messi would intimidate them even more.

ED have been taking my money since 1995. :P

I actually watched the game and opiniated its epicness based on that regardless what everyone else thinks. If they find the same then we have a pattern :)

So today is the day Germany meets France again. Both didn't play too well in their last matches, but both played against strong African teams.

I think on a good day my bet is on Germany, but you never know what Paul Pogba, Antoine Griezmann or Karim Benzema are up to. As I wrote somewhere on the last page, if those three can't decide the game, it will be the Germans who win. The French might be rested a bit better though.

It guess it will be an interesting game. :)

I read some players of the German team were down with the flu. I think they're up for a fight against the Frenchies.

I heard we should not believe everything we hear. :D

No seriously, I hope they are at full strength. No excuses, and the French deserve a tough game, so they can beat Germany and be proud, or lose against Germany and still get appreciation for the game.

(Yeah, just say it, I'm a carebear. I like it when nobody has to be sad.)

Congratulations to Brazil! That's going to be one hell of a semi-final. :)

I just hope Neymar will be okay. That foul looked terrible, and he doesn't strike me as someone who would act all that pain.

The statistics clearly favor Brazil over Germany, and I think Germany will have a really hard time. Then again, Brazil's game today was as nervous and hectic as Colombia's. If they can't shake that habit and if the German team plays like they did against France, we definitely stand a chance against Brazil even with Neymar at full strength.

What was really lame to see is the immense amount of mindless fouls. I remember just at the end of the first half near the columbian corner a brasilian player would push someone over about 10 seconds before it was over. Later on I think T. Silva just ran into Ospina while he was about to kick the ball from his hands. I'm sure there were much more, these are the two that come into my mind now. Hope Neymar gets better :\

It's interesting how Scolari would blame the referee when the harsh pace of the match was clearly a strategic team effort of the brazilians. Somebody should have told him that you reap what you sow.

Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two.

That bothered me as well. They played really rough, and then they complained when their opponents did the same. They really were lucky that the referee didn't deal cards like it was a blackjack game. IMO he should have, before it got out of hand.

As for Neymar: Poor guy, I hope he gets well soon. He's a great player. :(
