Yes, once I'm finished with it I'll put it up for download, and it will probably become part of future RCAF liveries. I also plan to do another version that will mimic the earlier Mk.4 Sabre cockpit as flown by the U.K. and Italy. They were completely black.

I've had to use a bit of "artistic license" as period photos of RCAF Sabre cockpits are extremely rare. Any photos of surviving cockpits have to be observed with some objectivity as they only show what the cockpit looked like when the aircraft was retired. There may have been various modifications done to it, including optional equipment added over the aircraft's service life. For example, I have a 1958 version of the POI (Pilot's Operating Instuctions) for the Sabre Mk.5. At this time the Mk.5 was being used as a fighter trainer at the OTU. The cockpit layout shows certain extras like target towing controls that wouldn't have been on the aircraft when it was still a front line fighter in 1955. Also, there could be minor differences from aircraft to aircraft, ie: in some photos the armament panel is grey, in others it's black.

Oh, and of course I can only modify colours and textures, can't move switches around or anything :)

This sounds really great for me jocko417

In the next few days I should get the italian handbook manual of the Sabre Mk.4. Maybe there are some useful pictures in those manuals...I'll advice you as soon as I'll get them.

Still working on the cockpits, have also started to skin the pilots.

Sabre Mk.6 23392 of No. 422 (Tomahawk) Squadron, 4 Fighter Wing, RCAF Station Söllingen, West Germany, circa 1955. The first 200-odd Mk.6 Sabres retained the hard edged, fenced wing of the Mk.5, after the slatted 6-3 wing was introduced on the Mk.6 the early ones were retrofitted.

And here`s the pilot...

RCAF grey flight coveralls, brown gloves, white bone dome with grey-green visor and 422 squadron patches. All we need is a nice green MS20001 mask...

Might adjust the visor to be a bit more green.

RCAF pilots in Europe wore a variety of US equipment as well as RCAF issue kit. I`ll probably mix things up a bit.

Right now I can`t get the helmet to work in the livery folder, I`ve replaced the default P-51D helmet texture. Been over the syntax a billion times and it still defaults to the grey HGU from the livery folder

Includes RCAF cockpit textures.

Should be available soon on DCS site.

BTW Belsimtek, how are we doing on that official template? These work horses need some dirt, as well as some paint chipping and flaking... Been holding off getting into serious weathering until I know if we're getting separate layers for lines rivets and dirt, etc. :)

They may look good shiny but these Swords need some stains too :D

Oh, BTW, I mentioned in a previous post that I can't get the p-51 hard shell helmet to work in separate livery folders. Right now I've put a basic white helmet in the main F-86 textures folder as a 'one size fits all' solution so it will at least replace the default grey HGU texture.

Once I finally figure out what I'm doing wrong and can get the helmet to work in each livery I plan to do squadron specific helmets, with art, if not too difficult given the mapping. For example, 421 pilots painted their helmets red. 439's were yellow with red stripes denoting rank, 441 had black and white checkers, etc.

So, if anybody has been playing with the helmet textures and has them working, please PM me so I can see where I've goofed! :)

if you really want it, i can set asise some time to re(raw all the panel lines and rivets in separate layers.

( I'd have to re-draw them completely as the ones painted on aren't straight ) AND then re-do the bump map layer.

weathering is easily added with the right brushes.

That is entirely up to you. Having made lines and rivets layers from scratch before I know how tedious (rewarding?) it can be :)

As for moving the thread, was it something we said? ;)

Making the lines would actually be pretty easy, there's just alot of them, and custom ones.

So I'd have to make custom brushes to use, the issue is they wont match the bump map layer, so it would have to be re-created as well, and without a actual template, it would be kinda hard to know how the original one is setup.

The Template already has a "Converted" Panel Lines/Weathered Overlay Layer on the top Group that was made using Filters on the Bump Map Layer.

Im actually interested to know what they used to make the specular map because it doesnt match anything else...

I saved my custom helmet texture as a .dds and use this line in the .lua

{"pilot_P51_helmet_A", 0 ,"pilot_p51_helmet_A_white",false},

the "white" part is my own descriptive word as I have been experimenting with red and yellow helmets also.

Check out one of my downloads as they are all updated with the new helmet textures.

Hope this helps mate.

Ok, so after banging my head against the wall for a while (where is that particular smiley, anyway?), I tried changing the 'A' from lowercase to uppercase and I swear that did it... Sheesh.

Cheers, Bo!

I'm out of town with work the next four days, when I get back I'll upgrade my existing skins with new squadron specific helmets.

The RCAF's first jet age helmet was a variant of the USN H-4 called the H-4-1, originally worn with those late war Polaroid M1944 goggles and later with a Canadian-designed visor. A separate cloth/nylon mesh liner was worn under the hard shell, which held the radio headphones and O2 mask attachment hardware. It fastened to the outer shell with a couple of snaps, one on each side.

440 "Red Bat" Squadron

The issued bone domes came from Gentex in basic white, but were painted in squadron colours once the wearer was posted to an operational squadron.

Another example:

439 Squadron H-4-1 outer shell in yellow with single medium width 'fore and aft' red stripe indicating rank of Flying Officer (F/O), equivalent to a Lieutenant. I believe 439 was the only squadron to exhibit rank on helmets.

photo1_zpscc249e33.jpg

This example is over 50 years old and has darkened with age.

W/C JP Bell, C.O. of 439 Squadron, '60-62, with squadron mascot, note multiple helmet stripes denoting rank of Wing Commander.

In game (brighter/younger):

dcs2014-10-0123-42-16-45_zpsc6a38b48.jpg

Going to make the '439' a bit bigger and play with the visor alpha so it's not so transparent.

Sabre-era 439 patches - left one came later with the Mk.6 Sabre and the famous "Fang" tail art. Middle one is 'experienced', right one never used.

I love your skins but ruin the texture of the interior of the nozzle, please Fix to approach perfection

Do you mean the intake? I have been meaning to sort that out for a while.

I remembered to do the panel behind the cooling air intake on top of the fuselage just before the red stripe that was dark, but kept forgetting that bit!

Blame it on my advanced age. Its now sorted as you can see:

Thanks for catching it, I always welcome constructive comments. :)
