SharpeXB Posted August 31, 2014 Posted August 31, 2014 A better system is needed for handling skins in DCS, especially for WWII. There should be something like Rise of Flight where they are all available from the developer in packs. That way every player has easy access to them. There's already over 100 skins for the P-51D. Downloading them individually is too time consuming. Part of the submission requirement is a thumbnail image so it can appear on the GUI Makes selecting them in-game easier. Hopefully ED can implement a new system, there's really nice work being done on the 190. i9-14900KS | ASUS ROG MAXIMUS Z790 HERO | 64GB DDR5 5600MHz | iCUE H150i Liquid CPU Cooler | ASUS TUF GeForce RTX 4090 OC | Windows 11 Home | 2TB Samsung 980 PRO NVMe | Corsair RM1000x | LG 48GQ900-B 4K OLED Monitor | CH Fighterstick | Ch Pro Throttle | CH Pro Pedals | TrackIR 5
J-1775 Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 A better system is needed for handling skins in DCS, especially for WWII. I fully second you! User skins (well, sound, pilot and other mods, too) are an attractive part of (buying an) aircraft and previewing, adding and removing skins should really be made easier and safer. The current system reminds me much of FS98... But DCS deserves better!!
Whiplash Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 I think a huge improvement would just be the option to select a skin when you log into a server instead of being forced to use the ones (which you may or may not have) that mission designer chose when they created the mission. ED Team NineLine Posted September 5, 2014 ED Team Posted September 5, 2014 As the core changes, as we go into 2.0, I think they will have the ability to look at better ways of doing a lot of things, I would imagine this would be one of them. JST Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Definitely agree, also questions: - Why does the texture file have to be divided into four parts for the game? - Why aren't the default texture files for planes stored locally? Bucic Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 The skin system needs more changes than you think if it's to properly show the variety of liveries during ww2 not to mention proper sqdn numbers. JST Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 What do you mean the default skins arent stored locally? Atleast for the Dora, they could not be found in their Liveries folder. My skins/liveries for Fw 190 D-9 and Bf 109 K-4: My blog or Forums. Open for requests as well. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
ED Team NineLine Posted September 5, 2014 ED Team Posted September 5, 2014 Atleast for the Dora, they could not be found in their Liveries folder. This is how most default skins are, but I am not sure why this is an issue? They are still in your install, but zipped up in one location. Its actually nice, for example if you have an A-10C skin you like, but want to add something personal to it, you might only need to add one image file, in this case you adjust the code to use your one image file, and the rest still point to your default skins... makes for a smaller file to share instead of having copies of the same files in your install, if that makes sense.... Really, where? It wouldn't be an issue really, had I know about this. I could start making skins instantly after release, instead of waiting weeks for someone to release a template. [DBS]TH0R Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 What I'd really like to see is skins combined with a mission file. So that once you join the server and start downloading map files the skins are also downloaded. This way one isn't forced to get a proper skin or squadron default for lets say an online historical event etc. Skin downloading during (on) the fly is also eliminated like it was/is in IL21946. In any case, skins need to be looked into. P-51D skins in particular with all those fuselage numbers look off unless someone assigned a custom skin to that slot. MFG62 Joker Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Either way, I assist the request to link skin and mission files. Especially for squads it is very nice to be able to have specific skins / Numbers for pilots. The way this was solved in IL2 really brought big fun through easy recognisable pilot assigned skins (trough combination of freely distributed skins and easyly assigned numbers for eac pilot).

The Il2 way was nice that all skins were sent if you did not have them but could be problem with the size of skins now. Even in Il2 our squad now would have a skin pack for all squad members to have so there was no need to use the bandwidth for downloading skins in the mission. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
