Hi,

I am flying with A-10C and MIG-21 since few months and weeks.

For me a great flight Sim must have nice graphics but realistic sounds too.

For the both, A-10C and MIG-21 graphics are really great but I don't understand why, after so long time, there is no a real jets engine sounds pack available on DCS.

More specially for the outside view during startup and taxi.

Did you already hear the sound of a APU or an engine on grounds ? It's really noisy and painful for the ears and these sounds are really good represented in FSX but not in DCS and I don't understand why ?

Here are few exemple :

Why is it not possible to find the same for the DCS procducts and do you agree with my point ?

Yes, these sounds on youtube are nice indeed. But remember that FSX is mostly a game.

DCS is mostly a sim. So DCS has to focus on people sitting in the cockpit, simulating the handling of these aircrafts, not those spectating outside cockpits. They have to get the sound inside the cockpits right.

Just me guessing and also my two cents.;)

I really hope that DCS 2.0 will have sound improvements, cause this sim have a too ridiculously loud engine sound, yes like state MTFDarkEagle IRL one are loud, but that not a reason to make players deaf...Its a sim, if we lower the engine sound, it reduce the distance it can be hear, its actually too short compare to IRL (where we can hear airliner cruising FL300, in DCS we can't hear over 3Km), and if we want a correct level, we cannot open cockpit or use external view, everytime someone make a low pass over us with open cockpit, i feel like my ears will explode, and i have lowered the engine sound slider, but still too much loud...

Simulate how aircraft work don't mean force the player to use ears protection IRL for playing the sim...

What the next step ? C4 under our joystick that will explode and kill us IRL if we crash on the sim ?

Something that will choke us irl when in the sim we have hypoxia ?

Here look at (for example) this video

and notice the volume difference between external and internal sound, that TOO MUCH !

Even the sound feel like it make headphone/speakers saturate...And NO this is not a effect from youtube compression, it that do the same in DCS.

Realistic or not, nothing justify the completely unbalanced level of sound between open and close cockpit, it should in fact be optional and disabled per default...

And i have anyway in the past make and show a video that prove that the actual DCS sound engine is completely wrong in all aspect except sound speed, but everything else is wrong, from Doppler to distance.

I really hope DCS 2.0 will have a really new sound engine and that ED will finally realize that this is TOO LOUD, seriously, even in Youtube, the ONLY video i'm forced to mute or lower the sound are...Guess what ? Yes DCS video !

Sound volume need normalization.

Yes, all the sounds from zzzspace are well done but at the end it's much more better than the default sound in DCS but for me it's still a lot of work to reach the true sound of engines jets...

Few months ago I was again on a military air base in order to see some F-16 during startup procedure and taxi. I was placed at +/- 20 meters from the fighters and sorry but the engines sounds in DCS are really far from the reality...:( with or without an helmet on your ears !

And after 3 years on DCS it's my only bad point for DCS...because for graphics we all know the arrival of EDGE ! ;)

Jet sounds, at this stage, aren't realistic at all but... with earplugs and helmet on you wouldn't hear them either don't you? :D

I'd rather ED and the third party developers modeled the aircraft sounds in all their glory, if people choose to use ear plugs while playing as a real life pilot would, well that's up to them ;)

I don't like to complain too much about DCS as I love it tbh, but sound is one of the weak links in DCS for me generally, it isn't bad but it isn't great either. I look forward to any improvements in this area.

Side note, that Lotus sim L-39 was excellent! One of the best addons I ever had for FSX, it even had rain drops on the canopy... :music_whistling:

A better jet sound (during flight, not really on ground) was made by ZZZspace (ZZZSpace sound 2.0).

In the file you have two very interesting sounds : PlaneWind and PlaneWindIn (Sounds\Effects\Aircrafts) !

I have reinstalled these two files after the last DCS update but the sound remain the same (as default) for the MIG-21...

Is it a tricky thing with MIG-21 and sounds ?

FYI I have also copied the sdef fils with the same names.

I also opened a thread a while ago, complaining about the sound of the P-51, especially in the Fly by pass view. It is not nothing like the real. I love the DCS modules, particularly the mustang (love warbirds), but the external sounds.......

True multichannel sound engine with hardware sound cards support for EAX and such... missing out in so many titles nowadays... hardware audio...

Imagine change of sound environment just as you taxi your A-10C out with cockpit open through gates of bunker hangar.

New audio system in DCS 2.0?! Did I miss something? Any official source? May I remind you that the sound engine has already been rewritten not long ago.

On the sounds in DCS. If you think DCS external sounds are very good you really need to go outside sometime :) That said, internal sounds for jests have improved massively in 2014!

Inadequate sound in DCS can be addressed by improved samples to a large degree but there are some issues not fixable by mere replacement of sound samples. The problem is the work on the DCS sound engine has been stalled but fortunatelly the need for further improvements has been acknowledged. Lots of details in [1].

The need for 'hardware audio' (i.e. an audio effect processor on a sound card) is a myth, EAX is outdated, incomplete and obsolete and surround sound/multichannel is nowhere near as good as true positional audio. For more info on the subject please visit the topic on positional audio. [2]

Matt, any news concerning a real audio upgrade ? Specially for the outside jets engine sounds ?:music_whistling:

As you can see we have some request or complains regarding the actual one...

Thx !:smilewink:

The sound quality has improved a great deal over the years. MiG-21 sound isn't the same as a real MiG-21 on the outside or the inside unless it's simulated with a helmet on.

for mig 21 audios these are very much WIP

Yup, I've seen Leatherneck devs stating it specifically.

I've reviewed the EDGE "FAQ" again.

No mention of sound or audio. Someone must have misinterpreted some posts.
