Chappie Posted December 18, 2014 Posted December 18, 2014 The time has come for me to purchase head-tracking software and TrackIR 5 plus the hat/reflector kit appear what I shall purchase. I am interested to know feedback and is TrackIR the most applicable head-tracker given competition and even do-it-yourself?
snowsniper Posted December 18, 2014 Posted December 18, 2014 opentrack 2.2 is quite good and free in all 6 dots mouvements and do the job. The only thing is you must be closely in dark if you use normal led on a hat like me. ( no IR but normal led) Don't know about track IR, ... but still quite expensive. i7-10700KF CPU 3.80GHz - 32 GO Ram - - nVidia RTX 2070 - SSD Samsung EVO with LG TV screen 40" in 3840x2150 - cockpit scale 1:1 - MS FFB2 Joystick - COUGAR F16 throttle - Saitek Pro Flight Rudder Pedals

Art-J Posted December 18, 2014 Posted December 18, 2014 TrackIR vs openttrack/freetrack and other alternatives is like Windows vs Linux. If You want idiotproof, developed product, which works straight out of the box, you choose option one. It's expensive though - overpriced in my opinion, but that's privilege of monopoly for ya. If You're OK with fiddling with hardware and software, you can go hippie and choose option two. Much cheaper, or almost free if you already have some spare PC camera, but making it work properly with Your all favourite games will require some effort. It's up to You how much money and time You're willing to spend on headtracking solutions. i7 9700K @ stock speed, single GTX1070, 32 gigs of RAM, TH Warthog, MFG Crosswind, Win10.

shagrat Posted December 20, 2014 Posted December 20, 2014 Than you have to solder a USB power supply for the LEDs and attach that to a cap, set up the software and tune it... Agree on TrackIR is overprized, but it is really working out of the box. The IR camera of the TIR 5 has a pretty decent resolution and uses addtional 'tricks' to get a veeery precise sensing... not that the TrackIR 4 Pro or a good working DIY solution is bad, on the contrary. Just TrackIR 5 is the easiest way to get headtracking to work without hassles and time consuming fiddling. Please, don't throw trash like Windows vs Linux on Sim site like this when the Linux is more widely used by consumers and critical production. Linux is like TrackIR5 with all benefits, windows is like The Original TrackIR. shagrat Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 I find the ability to lean forward/sideways too useful to do without. Especially sideways is very useful! Look around cockpit frames when flying formation or keep eyes on a bogey in dogfights... even look around the nose of prop planes. I wouldn't miss it either! 6dof is definitively something pretty useful! The ED Tracker is a nice start but as long as it keeps your head locked in the center of the screen with only 3DOF, they couldn't pay me to use it instead of any 6DOF rig. h.kan Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 The ED Tracker is a nice start but as long as it keeps your head locked in the center of the screen with only 3DOF, they couldn't pay me to use it instead of any 6DOF rig. I´m astonished in what you are saying? Isn´t it the other way around. Since edtrackers position determinates by an accelerometer/gyroscope you are not locked in at all. The position of the head dont matter but the movement does. But with the TrackIR that tell your position by reading some lamps position on your head, you are really locked in. Annother great feature of edtracker is that you can eliminate the tendency to drift, You selldom have to recenter. This might be the only drawback for the TrackIR ie that you have to recenter quite often. I do know that TrackIR works like a charm, and it F***ing should insanely overpriced as it is. But do you really need 6dof? I´m not so shure, I used TrackIR2 manny years ago and it was surely not bad. I mean zoom can be mapped to RNG or ANT and it will work great, and leaning sideways isnt that more of a gimmick, nothing you really need. If edtracker works and feels like TrackIR2 it will be great value for your money. And.. And since the component price is so low it would be an easy feat for ex Logitech to incorporat this in a gamingheadphone.
