Fri13 Posted June 20, 2016 Posted June 20, 2016 How could you possibly not want the F-14? Two cockpits with massive ammounts of switches, radar modes etc....AIM-9s, AIM-7s, Phoenix missiles... hot damn. All the F-5 has are two sidewinders and a few dumb bombs. Some virtual pilots goes for "ultimate fighter" as it would be that the DCS is for, as they want the best so they can beat others easier. But for most the DCS is a "study SIM" where you pick a module and study it train with it and then try to operate it with its limits and benefits against every other kind aircraft.a getting shot down is a victory if you learn something from it and you can get better in future. So a F-5E with just "two sidewinders and few dumb bombs" is still a huge threat to you in F-14 or any other, if you can't see it, it gets to good position and its pilot can keep his head cool. And the same is with Mig-21Bis as it is serious threat when flown correctly. And if F-14 requires two virtual pilots to get it well operated.... how many wants to fly it alone? i7-8700k, 32GB 2666Mhz DDR4, 2x 2080S SLI 8GB, Oculus Rift S. i7-8700k, 16GB 2666Mhz DDR4, 1080Ti 11GB, 27" 4K, 65" HDR 4K.
Dudikoff Posted June 20, 2016 Posted June 20, 2016 (edited) You have asked me the same on Viggen too. Viggen and F-5 over F-14 for me any day. And I believe I have made my point that it is so for me, as well as why :). True, but IMHO the Viggen and the F-5E are quite different in regards to market potential. E.g. I'd similarly gladly pay the full price or even more for some Soviet fighters (e.g. MiG-23M or later, MiG-25PD, Su-17M3/4, MiG-31, etc.) just because they're somewhat obscure and the chance of them being popular should be lower (and thus the chances of us getting them in DCS). In that regard, the Viggen is probably an oddball so IMHO it's definitely worth the full admission price for that factor alone while I'd expect the F-5E to be a more popular choice. But, we'e strayed far enough into OT, sorry for that. Hummingbird Posted June 20, 2016 Posted June 20, 2016 http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=154611 ;) Not the F4U-4 :(
Hummingbird Posted June 20, 2016 Posted June 20, 2016 It should also be noted that just because you don't initially fancy the prospect of a certain module that doesn't mean that you might not come to appreciate or even love it after trying it.
mattebubben Posted June 20, 2016 Posted June 20, 2016 It should also be noted that just because you don't initially fancy the prospect of a certain module that doesn't mean that you might not come to appreciate or even love it after trying it. Indeed. And that is why no matter ones initial opinion you should always try giving a module a chance (first by looking at videos talking to ppl that have it if that does not put you off then buy and try it) As my mother told me a thousand times when i was a kid. I cant say i dont like it if i have never tried it ^^.

NeilWillis Posted June 20, 2016 Posted June 20, 2016 That is a question we'd all love to know the answer to, but I wouldn't hold your breath for the answer just yet.
Buzzles Posted June 20, 2016 Posted June 20, 2016 @Matt: Yes, I classify it as a trainer because its air to air armament is the same as the other trainers, and its air to ground armament is handled entirely by adjusting depression angle and matching your speed and altitude. No CCIP, no CCRP, no TGP, no radar guided weapons or guided air to ground weapons of any kind. It is good to teach you to fly and do light bombing, like all the other trainers. Genuinely curious, what's the F-86 or Mig-15 in your eyes then? Back on topic: Hopefully more progress to be seen soon on this, I'd very much like to know how Jester AI is progressing in the next Dev Notes update. Fancy trying Star Citizen? Click here!
Tirak Posted June 20, 2016 Posted June 20, 2016 Genuinely curious, what's the F-86 or Mig-15 in your eyes then? Back on topic: Hopefully more progress to be seen soon on this, I'd very much like to know how Jester AI is progressing in the next Dev Notes update. Different era of aircraft. The F-5E has versions of it produced in the same year that had Maverick capability. There are examples of the fighter with minor upgrades to provide 4 sidewinder capacity. A version was also produced with AA refueling. All of these were contemporaries to the aircraft we received. On Topic: I'd be surprised if work on Jester has even started beyond broad ideas.
Hummingbird Posted June 21, 2016 Posted June 21, 2016 The F-5E is very limited in its capability, which is why I never saw it as a proper period opponent for the MiG-21, a spot I feel can only really be filled out by the F-4 Phantom, F-8 Crusadre or alternatively EE Lightning. However that doesn't mean that I don't think the F-5E is a cool little jet, because it certainly is and I'm really looking forward to fly it, I'm sure it will be a blast. I'm just not counting on being very deadly in it versus the other post 60's jets in any actual combat situation. Hence my plan was always to use it for DACT versus the four legacy fighters.

Hummingbird Posted June 22, 2016 Posted June 22, 2016 (edited) If you underestimate the capabilities of your enemy even before you start fighting you have already lost. Exactly, which is why I'm not expecting an easy win when flying the F-5E, I expect I'll have to fight for it quite hard. The only jet I'd feel mildly confident against is the MiG-21 if it chooses to turn fight me. Edited June 22, 2016 by Hummingbird

Cool Breeze Posted June 22, 2016 Posted June 22, 2016 when you can Pre-Purchase? Speculating that it will be some time next year. Leatherneck already has two modules plus maps they have to release this year. ED has two possibly three aircraft to release and a map . VEAO has two as well. Belaimteks' Tiger II isn't get released until July possibly August. If they optimistically released one per month after the Tiger II then maybe end of the first quarter next year into the second quarter. Just my uninformed speculation mind you. I'm hoping it will be sooner, but with very little news coming from anyone it's hard to be optimistic. Two weeks for sure!
