Mainstay Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 A nice documentary about a man and a woman becoming fighter pilots. They were amongst the last few to be trained for the F-14 before it retired and they converted to the FA-18. Some really nice footage to watch. Trailer below ; http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1112756/
Python Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 I have the Blu ray of this, It was okay if you want to see some F-14 action, but a much better show imo was Jetstream made by the discovery channel, it focused on Canadian F-18's and was really good. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

Mainstay Posted March 23, 2015 Author Posted March 23, 2015 I have to wait for the Bluray to fly it's self over the Atlantic... How is the quality of the bluray? Is it 720p, 1080i or 1080p? And hows the audio on the disc?
Alicatt Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 (edited) have to check, but the image is very grainy, watched part of it yesterday before the lads dragged me off for my stag do :D I was watching it in my cinema (3.5m screen) and it shows up any imperfections, on the TV it looks better, so I don't think the source material is HD, but it could be that it is film stock that was used rather than digital. Will have a better look tonight. Audio in general is good, in 5.1 or stereo, but the cockpit audio is difficult to understand, thank goodness it is subtitled for the fight sequences. Lots of deck cam footage showing landings and oops moments :) Edited March 23, 2015 by Alicatt Sons of Dogs, Come Eat Flesh Clan Cameron
Python Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 Yeah, it isn't the best quality blu ray from what I remember, I'll have to give it another watch. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Cobra847 Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 (edited) How is the quality of the bluray? Is it 720p, 1080i or 1080p? And hows the audio on the disc? It's been about 7 years since I watched this documentary, but from what I remember, the footage quality (resolution, not composition, lighting or artistic prowess) is a mixed bag. Many of the shots seem to be shot at 1080i (i.e. 540p in the end product) which was fairly standard for prosumer equipment at the time and in widespread use for documentaries. Some of the aerial footage seems to be shot on higher quality equipment (perhaps even on film, if the cost wasn't prohibitive). The in-cockpit shots are noticeably low-resolution as expected (no GoPro's at that time yet). ED Team NineLine Posted March 23, 2015 ED Team Posted March 23, 2015 I would be surprised if any of it was filmed in any sort of hi-def? But I could be wrong, and I would imagine the Bluray was probably just a converted DVD and not a true hi-def bluray... that said... the film is still all sorts of awesome :) Forum Rules • My YouTube • My Discord - NineLine#0440• **How to Report a Bug**
SkateZilla Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 BR was just source upconverted, to 1080i VC-1@20Mbps. Source was 720x480 film, lol, the BR as A whole got a 3/5 rating, video got a 2/5. Its very grainy and sections appear to be noise filtered with the standrard mosquito noise filter. Edges abd details are blurry abd its obvious it was a single pass re-sample. I mistakenly put 720 (from 1080i) above, but obviously moving from 1080i to progressive scan yielded SD resolution. They likely used Prosumer camera equipment which was very common at the time, thus the resolution. Nicholas Dackard Founder & Lead Artist Heatblur Simulations https://www.facebook.com/heatblur/
Mainstay Posted March 23, 2015 Author Posted March 23, 2015 Alright. Ill stick to the footage i have now then.
SkateZilla Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 I mistakenly put 720 (from 1080i) above, but obviously moving from 1080i to progressive scan yielded SD resolution. They likely used Prosumer camera equipment which was very common at the time, thus the resolution. I can upsample the DVD to 1080p and get fantastically better image clarity Export the DVD Mpeg-2 streams to Lossless AVI, then down mix the 29.97 FpS telecine/interlacing by using IVTC to manually select the progressive frames and drop it back to 24FPS progressive. then use the progressive stream, and apply resolution upsample to 4K. While at 4K, noise filter, color correct, sharpen and anti-alias any jaggies. Downmix back to 1080p/24fps. some final tweaks to color, export. These companies dont understand: you cannot noise filter interlaced MPEG-2 streams and expect decent results, same with up sampling them. The best results are achieved by inverse telecining the 29.97 fps source back to 24 fps progressive images. The source cameras recorded 720x480@29.976 NTSC @60Hz Interlaced. Alicatt Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 (edited) I'm pretty sure it's region free, I got mine from Amazon UK. Yup, mine is region free too, and got it from Amazon UK as well. It was delivered from the US and it didn't get stopped at customs here in Belgium - that was more surprising! Also just delivered today was ( just had to go open the door for the postie as I was writing the above) Tomcat! The F14 Story by Paul T. Gillcrist, had a quick flick through and lots and lots of lovely pics :D love the asymmetrical wing test, one wing at max sweep and the other at min looks kinda like a lame duck :) Edited March 24, 2015 by Alicatt Sons of Dogs, Come Eat Flesh Clan Cameron
Aginor Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 Ok, that sounds good, thanks, guys! I was a bit discouraged because when I looked in Amazon it said US import, and region code A for the BluRay, and for the DVD it says "region 1 USA/Canada only". DCSW weapons cheat sheet speed cheat sheet
Python Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 That's a cool picture, I didn't know the F-14 could even do that, I always assumed they would be linked to keep them perfectly alined. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
