Hiya -

I bought the Mi-8 immediately at release, but haven't really flown / studied her yet because I've been waiting for the beta to finish. But exactly how complete is this chopper now - any outstanding bugs or features missing still? Would like to hear your opinions, because I genuinely don't have a clue. Thanks!

You can't use the fans, the door of the cockpit is locked, has no stair for the lateral door, some problems at the apu functions. Also the heater is not working.

Other than that... Pretty much done. :)

Plus incomplete rotor animations (if You've read another recent tread in this section :D ), lack of door gunners option (though I don't know if these were ever planned to be implemented), non-implemented bombsight and some minor systems operated form cockpit (same note as above).

A bit of better optimization would help too, because next to MiG-21 it's still the most frame-rate heavy module in DCSW now.

But at least there is a draft of full EN manual available for it, pretty useful even in its rough and unfinished state.

Is there anything affecting, say, a manual startup? Can you start the bird as IRL for example?

The bombsight would be nice to have, yeah. But what are those minor systems exactly? Anyway, seems pretty complete to me so I may as well start learning her now :helpsmilie:

Well, about 1/4 of switches and circuit breakers in the cockpit ain't working, though they're mentioned in the manual, but it's not all that different from other study modules we've got in the sim, is it? All basic flight/radio/navigation/weapons stuff works, however, so for most users that should be enough to keep'em occupied.

I'm mostly fixed-wing guy and fly the Hip only occasionally for VFR sightseeing trips / silly stunt landings and slingload fun, so I didn't even bother to learn Doppler nav system. And yet, flying this thing, even in its beta status is fun.

Plus lacks english cockpit. I know there is a mod out there but come on it should be included in the stock module.

Lol , I'll get ya

Actually, it's not because the Mil helis has an automatic startup procedure, that means they aren't accurate. Western ( US ) helis at that time like the Bell 204,205,206 ... were " manually " ( not hand cranking hehe ) started as you well know with the Huey, but all Russian rotorwing I'm aware off used an automated start sequence, after the APU was running smoothly of course.

All you had to do is APU On, select your engine, press the start button to launch the process, open fuel levers and monitors temps rising ...

They nailed it down pretty well actually

I think there is a problem with restarting the APU and the fact that the emergency generator that is on it doesn't produce anything or can't be used in emergency.

But I haven't flown mi-8 for a while... I might be wrong as the info is a cross reference with a friend more versed in Mi-8 than me.

OK, to be more precise is there anything that'll prevent me from doing a complete preflight check following a RL checklist?

Why not find out? You said you already have it. But to answer your question, I think it depends on what is on your checklist. Everything directly related to flight and navigation appears to be in but some ancillary systems such as cabin lights and signal flares are not.

Cabin lights work now... almost all. The rheostats for red glowing lights work, the white dome lights I think work also.

msalama start her up... you won't regret it. There is a lot to learn about it even if the heater does not work... yet :D .

No, If the aircraft is russian then the buttons shall be in russian, same thing if the plane is american, swedish, chinese or whatever.

And if you still want the cockpit in your language, then you can just mod it. (nothing wrong with tooltips being in english though)

A real simmer learns the language of it's plane!

But seriously: The Mi-8 is used everywhere in the world with cockpits in dozens of languages. Giving us at least an official english cockpit would be nice.

We want the Sabre cockpit in Spanish, russian....

Not, really not serious. It's a sacrilege fly a soviet aircraft with a english cockpit. At the first stages of training is a bit hard, but later, you know the purpose of each button, switch...

ATM you have the US Army manual to see the labels in english.

I was under the impression that BST had announced an english cockpit ... back then.

So if it is released eventually some day, well, just don't use it, guys. "Problem" solved.

I could have used that last night when I was trying to restart the APU for half an hour while experimenting with the ground power startup. I kept searching for some fuel valve or something that I must have been missing as the APU kept powering down. :)
