D-Scythe
Been going over the AIM-120D photo again, and (I think) I've noticed something interesting. First, take a look at the AIM-120C's rocket exhaust. Note it's shape is basically a circle? Now compare this to the AIM-120D's exhaust. Note how it's NOT circular (can easily do this by comparing the shape to the blue lines painted on the missile's body, which SHOULD be parallel to each other like in the AIM-120C's). Probably would need a better photo to compare, but it looks that way from this one.
GGTharos
Hard to tell, esp. due to angle and the distance. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
Pilotasso
The rear end is funneled and so is in the first pic if you look carefully. ED Team Chizh Posted May 17, 2006 ED Team Share Posted May 17, 2006 I suppose the AIM-120D on this photo is mockup (blue strips) without engine. Vati
Also we should take into an account that you cannot compare 'live' with 'training' missile. Check the bands. http://www.condorsoaring.com

Alfa
Speaking of which Andrey :) .... I came across an internet source stating that the AIM-120C has a smaller warhead(18 kg) than the earlier AIM-120A/B(23 kg). I was wondering whether this is correct and if it is, whether this is taken into account for the new AIM-120C entry in Black Shark? :) Cheers, - JJ. Cobra360
Its a smaller warhead with a smarter fuse IIRC.

It's an adaprive warhead .. it may be smaller, but it'll smack the target 2-3 times as hard as the other one ;) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda

ED Team Groove Posted May 18, 2006 ED Team Share Posted May 18, 2006 Is the warhead designed to make a "shrapnell cloud" when its explodes ? Any photos of the warheads out there ? Our Forum Rules: http://forums.eagle.ru/rules.php#en
GGTharos
That's exactly what it's designed to do. Usually it's an expanding rod for most missiles. Force_Feedback
Some of them have expanding rods laced with metal cubes attatched to them, for a denser cloud. Creedence Clearwater Revival:worthy:

The Beast
ok found a little paragraph about the-120d thaught you guys might be interested in readin it so here it is The AIM-120D (P3I Phase 4, formerly known as AIM-120C-8) is a development of the AIM-120C with a two-way data link, more accurate navigation, an expanded no-escape envelope, improved HOBS (High-Angle Off-Boresight) capability, and a 50% increase in range. The AIM-120D is a joint USAF/USN project, and is currently in the early testing phase.
The Beast
Also we should take into an account that you cannot compare 'live' with 'training' missile. Check the bands. normally there is very little difference between a live and captive missle.
