After installing DCS on my new computer, I notice that I'm getting a static sounding noise on lift off. It will stop if I reduce power and land. I'm getting the same thing on my Open Beta install as well. I've disabled mods, etc. with no success. It's very annoying. Any help is appreciated.

I tried that. I don't think it's related to the radio. It doesn't happen while sitting on the ground. Once you become airborne it occurs.

This is occurring in both my primary install and the open beta. It's driving me crazy. Does the primary install and the open beta share any files? I wouldn't think so but I'm obsessed at solving this. The sound is so much like static as a constant hissing.

Do you have a seperate sound card or is it onboard*? Will be worth making sure your drivers are up to date, including your DirectX installs.

Don't forget to check your windows speaker setup as well via control panel, make sure you're matching your physical setup and check the rates as well.

Have you also tried turning the sound level's down a little bit via the ingame menu?

*While you've put your mobo in your sig, you've not given the full model number, so I can't check the specs.

My MB is GA-Z97X-SLI Durable. I'm using on board sound. I've played around with the sound levels...no joy. It's the only aircraft that does this.

Hmm, if it's just this module that's quite odd.

I was going to say try the sound drivers, granted last release was a year ago, but it all depends on when you last updated if ever.

Have you tried a repair yet? Might be a corrupted sound file if it really only affects the KA-50.

Yes I've done a repair. I have the Open Beta installed and it does the same thing there. My sound drivers are up to date. It's mind boggling.

I was erring towards there being too many voices, or there's a sound file playing something outside of the happy freq range of the audio chip (shouldn't be possible mind), but you'd hear something in other modules when a lot of things are going on.

Er, have you tried changing the playback quality in Windows? (Control Panel -> Sounds -> Playback tab -> Speaker Properties -> Advanced Tab)

Shouldn't have an effect but you never know.

Yes, I've played around with those settings.... No joy.

I don't know if its related, but it happens when the blade angle hits 11. Is there a sound file that engages at that point?

I was thinking maybe the throttles aren't getting set to auto, or are jumping away from the auto setting, and the generators are clicking on once the engines have to spin up for a certain blade angle setting. The Shkval isn't blinking on and off, though, and there's no EKRAN warning for electrics on battery.

JC, post a track. It's either something with your setup, or something with the game. If we view the track and get the noise, it's the game. If not, it's your setup. That'll help narrow things down, at least.

I wish I could help, but this problems seems really weird.

When I play back the track, I do not get the weird sound.

I do have a UH-1H sound mod installed, but nothing that touches the Ka-50 so my installation should be pretty much virgin regarding the Black Shark.

One thing I noticed is that in your video from post #7, your sound seems a lot more dull or muffled than it does for me in-game. Maybe it has to do with video and audio compression and it's probably not related anyway, it's just the one thing I instantly noticed when comparing the track and the video.

This is occurring in both my primary install and the open beta. It's driving me crazy. Does the primary install and the open beta share any files?

In a way, yes, AFAIK.

When installing the Open Beta, it copies as many files as possible from the standard installation and then only downloads or updates files that are changed in the Open Beta from ED's servers. That's why sometimes the download rate reaches seemingly absurd levels that are more like the maximum HDD transfer rate and not so much what your DSL/T1 could possibly provide. :)

So I'd say it's not much of a surprise that the standard installation and the Open Beta share this problem.

I think next I'd try, in this order (checking if the problem persists after each of these):

  • uninstall and reinstall the Ka-50 module
  • rename Saved Games\DCS (not sure what it should accomplish, but for the sake of completeness I'd try it anyway; if nothing changes, just delete the newly created DCS-folder and rename the old one back)
  • uninstall the Ka-50 module, rename the Open Beta Mods/aircraft/Ka-50 folder (in order to make sure that a new Ka-50 installation doesn't copy anything back from the Open Beta), then reinstall the Ka-50 module
  • uninstall DCS World, rename the entire DCS World OpenBeta folder (in order to make sure that a new DCS installation doesn't copy anything back from the Open Beta), then download and reinstall DCS World from scratch

If you pull the collective hard does it get louder?

Search and rename RotorKA50Dyn.wav to see if the problem goes away.
