And it's truly bizarre looking alien world, worthy of a 1970's on-acid scy fi painting. It started like this: and now looks like this (latest pictures) The probe wil reach the closest approach pint tomorrow and Wednesday it will transmit photos with a resolution of 90m per pixel (about 270 feet). .

Not even a week ago there were barely any surface features visible, and now New Horizons has already sped past Pluto and is on its way further out. I am very excited to see the up-close and high-resolution images over the next few days!

There must be a source of heat driving the activity and because Pluto and Charon are tidally locked it can't be tidal heating like we see at Io. The fact that a small world like Charon is active makes the rest of the Kuiper belt a lot more interesting. Next press conference will be Friday 13:00 EST and full data download will take 16 months, so stand by for much more exciting stuff to come. The more we learn about these worlds, the more interesting they become. I just gotta say, I think it's pretty awesome that we (all of us) are the first people to see what Pluto looks like. Ever. In the whole history of the universe, we are the first. That's pretty cool.
