Airmobile Event #2 - Night Stalkers: Fall of Hercules

It was so epic to fly as an Mi-8 in a group of 30 helicopters, low through the valleys, in the dark, seeing tracers light up. Accelerating past the threats, careful not to bump into friendly choppers, I could feel my heart pounding in my chest.

Too bad the server crashed. Especially in the beginning of the mission, with all of Batumi, the lights and all flights in sight, my framerate dropped to about 10 FPS due to the sheer number of objects. Here's to hoping we will be able to fly this mission with good performance and server stability in 1.5!

Thanks to everybody involved for a great night of flying, I still had a great time!

Special thanks to Chuck for organising these missions, you're a god!

P.S. Can I reserve an Mi-8 slick in the next Airmobile Air Assault mission?

For those interested, here's the stream footage from the perspective of ULTIMATE 4-1: http://www.twitch.tv/sniporbob/v/12421113

I got a brief lag right as I was transitioning to hover near the troop ship and entered VRS :(

Thanks for the fun flight everyone! And a special thanks to Chuck for putting this together! It's unfortunate the server crashed. This looked like it was going to be a really fun mission!

It was a memorable mission, loaded with helicopter challenges. Thanks again Chuck for a great organizing job. It was a shame that the mission crashed but I still had a great experience.

I had a few "accordion moments" trying to hold formation in the back, but I still managed to link up with my flight when we separated a couple of times.

I found it particularly difficult to judge closure rate in the dark. Perhaps if the leads announced speed and altitude now and then, that would help.

Cheers!

I think i just got accidentally banned from the ts... some trolls were in and you mighta clicked me by accident

nvm, "too many complaints" whatever happened there... and it's temporary too, back in a sec

I also got banned, as did everyone else in our channel.

Give me the names of the people banned on teamspeak and I'll get it sorted. I know a guy. :D

Oh, and before I forget (sorry for double-post)...

I want to give a big shoutout to a couple of fellas during the event.

1) Phantom

Big thanks for taking over Rectifier One on a moment's notice.

2) Cooper and UGLY flight

They were the stars of the show IMHO. Not only did they guide the whole assault, engage enemy insurgent forces with ruthless efficiency and communicate with cool professionalism their intentions, but they also used illumination flares to guide all ULTIMATE flights through the mountain pass. Navigation at night is quite hard but I could still make out the lights of UGLY and RECTIFIER flights just fine. I saw a big improvement regarding the Kamovs' efficiency between last event and this one.

3) Jacks

Great communications, and a sharp tactical mind. He asked the right questions at the right time during briefing so once we took off everyone had a general idea of what to do, when and how. A big thanks too for giving me the proper callsign names used in Afghanistan. I thought it made the experience very immersive!

4) Dabomb and the 229th

Doing these events requires a lot of organization and resources. One of these resources is the 229th server, which held up pretty well for a good hour and a half before it crashed. Many thanks to the 229th who graciously accepted to host the event on their server with my mission.

5) ATAG_Striker and the ATAG administrators

A couple of "allah akhbar death to america" trolls came in at the beginning of the session, but Striker promptly smote them with the banhammer... which is very gracious of him. I think we'll use a password for this particular TS channel next time. I think we must not forget to thank the ATAG folks for letting us use their teamspeak and to give us customized channel names (it made things so much easier to manage from an organization perspective).

6) Flight leads in general

I honestly thought that it would be next to impossible to coordinate 30 players at once. In major online campaigns even with 20-or-so people it's still quite hard to get anything done in an orderly fashion. We still succeeded to takeoff in a very organized manner and I think part of the reason is that the flight leads did a good job at communicating concisely and efficiently. In these kind of events, leadership makes or breaks everything. In our case, I think they put on a fantastic performance.

7) All ULTIMATE flights

I wasn't sure about putting ships (and at night!) to pick up troops but I was glad to see that many of us succeeded in landing on the frigates. It's a difficult, challenging task that only the best pilots can achieve given training and dedication. It's a testament of the skill many of the community members display during the Airmobile events. I am 90 % sure that we could've secured the crash site no problem had our session not been cut short. Top job, everyone.

Forgot how superior Russian NVG s are :)

I installed the recommended NVG mod before flying and IMO it's much easier to see green/black for me than white/black.

I also found that the "default" saturation/brightness is too much. I dim my goggles to the minimum, then come up 1 tick. (Watching Sniperbob's video feed, he had a ton of bloom especially near the runway lights that didn't affect me nearly as much)

Does anyone have a picture of the teamspeak channel with everyone in it?

I have this:

This is the recording from my perspective. I've cut the startup part and the 20 minutes we waited on the tarmac before going in the valleys.

Sorry it took me a bit longer to pick up troops... I had lost sight of my flight for a second and after decided to go for a frigate I was only concentrating on not to f... up. :D

Also my microphone is on the headphone wires and usually my squad mates are individually raising the volume in team speak and that's why I was not heard very good.

If you don't mind me asking, what software did you use to turn it into a video/what were you using to record?

Shadowplay @20mbs. Then after a quick cut saved in Avidemux as mp4 with almost default settings then... youtube.
