In the Beta 1.5 P51 Tracers are almost not visable except for a smoke trail.

As I stated in the post about tracers.

About the tracers effect in DCS P-51D, I think the tracers effect maybe could use a little bit of up date. However not much. The smoke trails could be a little bit better.

According to this gun camera it shows some tracers and at times no tracers, however there is more smoke trails then you see tracers.

Now this may be due to the pilots own prefernce of his ammo load out.

Yes I have fired tracers when I was in Viet Nam. Fired both .50 Cal and M-60. I know there was at least two traces colors one was red and the other was orange. Every fifth round was a tracer. However during the day the tracers was not very bright and you could hardly see them. At night it was a different story, you could see the red or orange very clearly. Fact I watch Spooky and Puff fire their mini guns at night and it was one long stream.

So as far as the tracers goes, they could be a bit more bright white and may be more of a smoke trail.

Also maybe the hit effects could be more detrail.

I have noticed the difference too, but I prefer the latest tracer effect with V 1.5 to the previous version, as I think the tracer was overdone before.

Also, if I had the choice, I would prefer not to use tracer rounds at all.

They are too weak, and hard to spot.

They need improvment.

Hi Solty,

Thanks for your post. Are we sure that photographs and film, recent but also including particularly those taken during in WWII, actually give us the same effect as we get using the live naked eye, when we view them second hand through such medium?

I am no expert on this sort of thing, but during the daytime on a bright sunny day I would not really expect to be able to view tracer very much against a clear sky in an air-to-air situation.

Perhaps DCS have got the tracers about right with the latest version. I have not flown the P51D on DCS in fading low light situations, so can't comment on that, but I would expect them to naturally show up more as darkness nears.

Happy landings,

But whats the purpose of the tracer round ?

I noticed in the video Cheyenne included

that the Mustang's rounds are in fact HE Rounds and they do Significantly More Damage than the DCS Mustang rounds do.

I truly with DCS would do something about this because currently it takes WAY Too Many hits to do anything to the German Planes.

That video is PROOF !~

Sorry but they are not HE. They are M8 API Armour-Piercing-Incendiary. Which can blow up and set fire to ammo, fuel fumes and other flammable objects on an aircraft. But yes we miss some ammo types for P-51D and I have made a thread about it.

Check this thread for more info on M2 HMG 12,7mm ammunition used during WW2 :3

Yup .. Yer Right

Yup yer right Solty

I actually meant Incendiary ... Not HE.

But the fact remains, our current rounds don't seem to have nearly the affect they should have.

Especially when witnessing umpteen videos that show kills that usually happen within a few seconds. Not after dumping our entire loadout into an enemy aircraft, while pieces are flying off and smoke from hits and oil smoke etc etc.

My point is that it seems to take WAY MORE hits in DCS than in reality.

That's just my observation.
