I have tried it out in the KA-50 today, and kind of like it actually.

Nice touch they have added.

It was hard to hear in the youtube video due to the compressed audio, but once I fired up the game and enabled the option, the effect was very obvious.

This. It is very obvious in game for me, although I use headphones. Actually love the new effect! Adds a lot to the atmosphere.

It acts like a high pass filter cutting out the brightness in the mix

Low-pass, but yes, that's my impression too.

Does this feature include some HRTF or positional audio, or is this a simple sound filter?

No. Sounds like a simple low pass filter to me.

I do spatialize the audio for my stereo headphones though. I set my audio driver to 8 channels so that DCS recognizes it as a surround system, then I enable Dolby Headphone which down-mixes everything to stereo while retaining the spatialization using HRTF. It works pretty well, but it's not true 3d spatialization becouse surround systems create a 2d plane, not 3d. A normal surround system lacks up and down spatialization.

For me it is to subtle to be able to notice the difference. Tried wit MiG15 and the Huey. Especially engine sound was remarkably loud as ever. Under a helmet you shouldn't really hear anything but some background static noise and the engine very far in the distant. This is not the case with this setting.

I have been flying more and more with this option enabled, and finding I like it more and more. I am only flying the KA-50 currently, but I really like the effect of this new option. I think I will keep in enabled.

Thanks ED for adding yet another option for us. Nice touch!

I like it. It really sounds a lot more muffled when it comes to engine sounds, etc, while keeping voice-based information loud and clear.

This should be the default setting for all training missions with voice-overs.

I really like it too. More realistic and it will help in multiplayer. There are times I have difficulty hearing others with TeamSpeak when the engine and other cockpit noises are going on.
