Hey guys,

I have a question.

I have just bought the Acer Predator X34 and as awesome as it is, with its 3440 x 1440 resolution it has had a toll on my frame rates. My specs are as follows:

MoBo Z97X-Gaming 5, quad-core Intel® Core i5-4460 CPU @ 3.20GH, 8gb of RAM (I was sure I had 16Gbs though, I will need to check if one hasn't failed or disconnected), NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 GPU 2GB.

Now my question is about the GPU - to what should I upgrade it or perhaps should I get another GTX 960 and SLI them, which would be cheaper? On the other hand I heard that SLI means only 50% boost and the GPU RAM does not add up.

I have tested a few missions in Caucasus yesterday and at the airfields I had around 30-34 fps, further away 45-60, which is OK, but not good.

Any thoughts would be most welcome.

I'm running an R9 270x myself still with decent frames, but also thinking about upgrading.

I decided to wait till June/July though, cause I wanna see what Nvidia and AMD are going to release then.

Go 980ti mate or if you can wait for pascal to come out and look at the reviews do that. My understanding is with that amount of pixels your running you need more vram and also get check your ram problem 16gb is a must for this game. I'm no computer nut but I'm getting an idea. I have a 970 running a 27 predator at 2560x1440 gsync. DCS doesn't like sli atm that why I went from 2 670 4gb sc to a 970 and received a large performance gain

I'm happy with my 980 at 3840x2160. At high settings it's at 60 fps (vsync on) nearly all the time except for certain situations that involve trees. So I wouldn't think you'd need to go with a 980ti.

980 ok for 1440p but I would buy the Ti if I had to buy again.

Video Memory and the overall bigger chip may make 2.x more playable when you chase someone down the strip with 55-75 fps, in i Ti that might be 75-100fps at my settings.

if you have time, wait 2-3 month and grab the new nV beast.

Thanks guys!

I upgraded RAM (turned out I had only 8gb after all) and will probably get the 980ti soon. For the momentmy 960 is doing prettty well, with 40 fps at Nellis and almost 80 outside... but haven't tested really heavy missions with lots of traffic. Thanks once again!

For the love of god, if you want a new card in the same range your old one was. Hold off for now. And do not go for SLI, less games support that now, and it really brings more trouble than advantages.

Personally, im holding off in hopes for a new amd card this year, i've had enough of nvidias drivers already, and it seems like AMD is more focused on bringing gaming cards than what nvidia is doing. AMD is owning most if not all of the gaming consoles gpu's, and their cards have already supported async compute for quite some time (DX12, vulkan, mantle) unlike even the gtx 9xx series.. It is quite dissapointing really that they market a series of cards as DX12 ready, without one of it's most important features.

Wait june for the GTX 1070 - 1080 release.

Even if you're not interested in spending money on the top notch, you'll probably see price drops for the current gen cards. :smilewink:

tbh i would rather have a sligtly less powerful next generation this time thn buy an older one as this is a big step in gpu tech. At least with nvidia, the technology in place for vulkan and dx12 is not really possible with the gtx 9xx series. (async compute i mean). But if you must, get the R390 (developed with mantle in mind, will work well with dx12 and vulkan too) over the gtx970, but if you just want the top end id say gtx980ti is still usually going to be better right now than amd. Might be different on dx12 or mantle, but not much.

I recently bought an MSI 980, I'm running triple 1080 at 30-40 fps depending where I am, DEFINITELY recommend this card to anyone. BUT Pascal is soon arriving and will be better than the current gen cards, but if you cant wait (like I couldn't) then grab a 980 or somethign along the lines of that. I realize a 980 is $500 USD and that is very pricey, my 5760x1080 does not have as many pixels as a 3440x1440 display so it could run 3440x1440 at higher fps and I am guessing a 970 would still do well. But like everybody else says, wait for Pascal GPUs as they can only be better, or wait to get a price drop on 900 series cards like the 980 or 970.

PC Specs: i7 4790 (non K), MSI GTX 980, 1TB Seagate HDD, 32GB Crucial DDR3-1600MHz RAM, 3 Samsung 1920x1080 monitors, EVGA 850W G2 PSU

980 is not good performance for price atm. Like stated earlier, you would be paying 500usd for a card that might be matched even with the r9 390 in dx12 or vulkan, and will surely be quite the step down from next gen 1070 and whatever corresponding amd card.

Be careful with current Nvidia cards, not because they are bad, they are the most efficient cards on dx11, but because they lack the ability to get a boost from async compute (not built for it and not capable of doing it)

Fair enough, it is pretty pricey

Good card still, never ever regret a purchase.. It will haunt you, be happy with what you got.. 980 wont be useless over the night probably will just be less current in a few years.. Im stil running 670, so theres that.

Yeah, it will definitely not go obsolete overnight, it will be relevant for a little while, I took Linus Tech Tips advice, buy the best card you can afford now and it will stay relevant longer than a lower end card in a few years. When some big technology comes out the 980 (like all other pieces of hardware) will need an upgrade
