colubridae Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 I'm sure someone has asked this before... but why do vikhr rockets spiral in on their tragets? col

3Sqn_Fudd Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 http://forum.lockon.ru/showthread.php?t=5614&highlight=vikhr+spiral+fin Question answered...only to a degree though. It seems this is still a significant waste of a missles energy, and that any advantage would be allayed by the waste of energy. OT: The MBT Arena defense system seem very effective... anyone have research its field effectiveness? I think Tank technology is at least as interesting as aircraft technology. Chobham (Dorchester) armor, Arena, Shtora, Reactive Armor, DU, Electro Reactive Armor, Top Attack Missles... quite interesting http://3sqn.com/forum/ Here's to 1.13 -- > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0488djMDBU
bogusheadbox Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 Maybe the spiral is a design feature of the missile>??? Perhaps it is to help avoidance of the missile being shot down whilst in flight ?

It seems this is still a significant waste of a missles energy, and that any advantage would be allayed by the waste of energy. The design made the missile much smaller and cheaper. So you can carry many. TekaTeka from Japan [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Visit my site Beyond Visual Range.
nscode Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 The spiral is much smaller in RL and thus is the energy waste.. we'll be able to see this in BS :) Never forget that World War III was not Cold for most of us.
Jay Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 On the other hand Vikhrs will be much more limited when engaging high speed flying targets (planes) in the BS than now in the FC.... GGTharos Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 That's correct, though 'much more' is debateable ... you certainly aren't going to want to engage high-speed crossing targets, but head-on or tail-on and more or less co-altitude you're fine. Never tried to use one of these against another aircraft. Though thinking about it. I don't get a lot of time to do anything when a fighter has a bead on me.
Force_Feedback Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 and we can finally switch on the poximity fuse on the thing. And in real life they don't spiral in such giant spirals like in FC. And all modern 'lightweight' (not Javelin, or other heavy fire and forget missiles) ATGMs spiral, and they too don't spiral with 30m spirals. Yes their speed is slower, but they too spiral in more or less a straight line from the beginning, and not in a cone-shape when viewed from the side like we have in 1.12a. ATGMs are one of my favourite subjects, they have something magical to them, something that is like "w0w, I can seriousely damage a very expensive tank with this thing, and live to tell about it too". Plus the guidance methods are very interesting, and require great skill (3 point guidance on 1st gen systems). Let's post some informational sites (not fas) on ATGMs. I don't have any b/c I have a couple of books on atgms. Creedence Clearwater Revival:worthy:

Those were the only ones shown to the public, rippd from some documentaries. Nice to see an occasional guidance error (does Vikhr WAFM mean that we also will get the occasional guidance error?), and the quality is fine too, you can read everything. Nice vid. Some nice vids, on missiles Look at the cool initial guidance stage, with 4 thrusters in the front. Topol-M Creedence Clearwater Revival:worthy:
