Anyone heard of this, sounds kinda interesting and i can't believe it slipped under my radar. http://www.phoenixosfs.org/

The models looks kinda nice, it was said they also run pretty power engine so each aircraft will have a max of 40k poly. I was talkng to this guy who made an F-14 and wanted someone to skin it, he said he didn't mind if it was used in other games so maybe this is our chance to get an new F-14 model, hopefully its animated. Anyway, the original thread was at frugals http://forums.frugalsworld.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=111939

What really interested me was the fact the gallery was most of the flyable planes for lock on, a-10, F-15, Su-25, su-27...etc, Would love it if those boys show up here and offer their assistance.

That's what I'm trying to find out, since its open source, we can get our hands on it, of course ill tell the creators i will be doing that and my thanks. You can find several of the .3ds format of the models on their forum. I'm trying to make sure if they are animated and such.

Most of the aircraft models are created by krazyscotsman, theses models are very respectable and I hope someone in the lock on community can skins them and add animation. Most of the 3ds files can be downloaded on the screenshot forums so I hope someone can add the animations in 3d max. Note: this is an open source project so it’s nothing illegal or anything, just as long you know these models were created by krazyscotsman (he’s awesome). I already informed him about this little adventure/testing, just as long as the credit goes to him. Please, if anyone have any talent in skinning and know about the arguments in 3dmax needed for animation, please step up. This is a great chance to do some changes to our flyable models.

Here are some screens of the project:

what does it say when you click on the link? At first i couldnt get in either because those threads are 30+ days old so i have to go to the bottom and show all threads from the beginning of the forum so i can see these projects. However i can't find a 3ds file for that F-16, it wasn't created by krazy, it was submitted by Raptorman - but they can't recall the author of the model. So you might have to post and request that. This is the thread to the F-16 if you still can't see it, hope you can see this one http://phoenixosfs.org/forum/showthread.php?t=652

Edit: i did make a request and krazy said he will upload those 3d max file, but it might take a couple of days since he's a bit busy. I can respect that, we all got things to do.

hmm weird, and this happens when you click on the screenshot link? Well i guess you can go through the long way by entering the main forum http://phoenixosfs.org/forum/ and then just and go under Content Creation, and click on screenshots or 3d models from there. But be sure to set to view previous threads from the beginning so you can view the various projects.

there's no content creation forum...

I think you might have to be register to see the content creation thread, because this is what i see

Well regardless we know in the future we will get new models for the old flyables. Assuming there are people out there that already have models that need to be modifyied into lock on like the site above or maybe ED will add it in, not sure if it will be in black shark though. Knell posted these pics http://www.lockon-models.com/index.php?showtopic=116&st=0&gopid=559entry559

Well anyway just a small update, krazy just contacted me, he said he would upload the .3ds files sometime this weekend or the next if he finds time. But now i need some skinners and some comments. Becaue e informed me when he created the Su-27 or the A-10, it was the first models so they didnt really have a limit, so its like 65+ poly, is that too much for lock on's engine?

65K is acceptable, but does it have LOD's? Else, the models are not of much use, unless you can use the existing models as LOD's (through .skins files or something?). Remember that the weapon models (e.g. R-27) and variable geometry (gear, flaps) also use additional geometry.

There is really no exact limit to the number of polygons as far as I can tell - so far I have managed to get a 360.000 polygon warship into Lock-on and on another occassion had two 280.000 polygon destroyers escorting the Kuznetsov while a 50.000 polygon fighter landed on it.....no problems at all and I even had most Lock-on settings, including "water", on high :) .

It seems that ten 10.000 polygon objects will have a greater impact on game performance than one 100.000 polygon object - if this is correct, then the thing to take into consideration is the type of object - i.e. how numerous the instances in which it is likely to appear in a mission......and where :) .

No I don't think 65K polygons is going to cause too much of a problem either. The lack of LODs does not make a model "useless" - there are in fact models in Lock-on(e.g. the F-18 ) which have none. But of course the "heavier" the model, the more need for LODs to keep game performance acceptable.

The *.skins files are only for managing textures - i.e. to allow alternative sets to be applied externally(of the model) via the "Payload Editor" in Lock-on. Older Lock-on(and Flanker) models had a fixed number for which each set is activated via a predetermined argument value "within" the model.

Remember that the weapon models (e.g. R-27) and variable geometry (gear, flaps) also use additional geometry.

You are right that ordinance does have a significant additional impact on how "heavy" an aircraft is on game performance, but the ~50.000 polygon limit that ED is operating with only concerns the aircraft model itself, which of course includes things like landing gear(as far as I can see this is already modelled on the models SuperKungFu is refering to) - but not weapons which are totally separate objects.

Cheers,

- JJ.

Just setting something straight, open source doesn't mean you can get your hands on the models, open source means the source code is available (on SourceForge) and can be used under certain conditions.

thanks raptor, you are 100% right. As for the models, i can only get it if i get permission from the person who made those models, which is krazyscotsman, and so far it seems he will allow us to use it when he uploads them which i am very grateful for.

If you still need the base PSD for the Su-27 (need to check with krazyscotsman) I can send that over too.
