I don't see why people are making such a big deal of this.

Either you stick with standalone or you stick with the Steam version, and I suspect the vast majority of users do exactly that already.

The only people this change is hurting is the small set of people who run standalone but like to take advantage of the fact Steam is occasionally cheaper for modules.

Yes, it sucks a little bit for you guys, but lets face it, you are basically gaming the system.

Would it be better if Standalone vs Steam worked as it used to pre-2014 when key merges worked both ways? Of course. But that's not going to happen again.

This is straight out wrong. If you take the time to look at the relevant threads you will notice that most of the active users in the community really want the same release dates / early access / beta etc. as the standalone community.

And if you take the time to look, many users complain about buying a module early access and it not being complete. Its a double edge sword. ED has opted to wait on the Steam version, especially now with the 2.0 branch that cannot be used in Steam with limitations in their open beta system.

The 'big deal' is that sometimes the Steam sale is better than the DCS World sale. I have bought some modules through Steam but I don't play DCS on steam as I can't get early access modules or the updates.

The problem now is that someone new comes along. Really interested in DCS and buys a couple of modules. They then find that they want to fly something that is in early release. So they go to the DCS site and buy the module. They then find that they can't play the new module in Stream. So they download DCS World from the site. They then think they'll play with all of their modules in one place, but they can't. They need two installs of the same game.

Now it's not massive, it just needs to be made clear on Steam that this is the case, and that DCS is available as a stand-alone game with early access modules available in beta, or whatever. Whether Steam allow this I don't know.

It just causes issues for new adopters of DCS.

+1

exactly my opinion

Actually, most of the modules prices are -more or less (with a tendency of being more expensive) the same in both stores- actually, most of the time theyre more expensive (not so much but still) for most of Non USD countries, with the exception of Mexico where it can cost in average 14% more. All those prices are set by ED not Steam

By the way, steam sales are less frequent than ED store and in some cases less % (30% instead of 40%) + no early access

So, no, were not gaming the system ;)

EDITED: Im not going to lie, we used to have great deals on Steam but thats not the case anymore (as the old good big discounts and very frequent on ED store)

Greetings

especially now with the 2.0 branch that cannot be used in Steam with limitations in their open beta system.

Especially "now" implies this statement is a recent issue.

2.0 has been out since November of 2015. That is 1.5 years ago and steam still does not have it

Your linked source has nothing to do with the issue at hand. I am aware of that post and it is not about beta patches (for example beta for 1.5) but different branches. Again, a vocal minority has spoken out against early access. To clarify, there were a bunch of capslock threads, that are frequent, over issues close/on release.

I dare you to make this assertion over on the steam forums right now. I dare you. Overwhelming sentiment has been, that the delay on beta releases (not completely different branches 1.5 vs. 2.0) is unnecessary. I understand you do not speak directly for ED but are a voluntary mod but your tag gives your opinion weight... To put it nicely, you are not in touch with the dcs-steam community.

It has everything to do with it, I have seen early access modules drop on the 2.0 build, we have content maps and campaigns that are only for the 2.0 build.

As for history showing peoples distaste for early access, you can start off when ED did do it on Steam with the A-10C module.

The fact is, this is the way it is, there was major issues with using SF keys over at steam, some issues ED isnt at liberty to share. This was a needed change, and at this point we are beating a dead horse.
