I see Newegg has the rift on sale for $399 with the motion controllers. If I want to use it for dcs a-10c, what else is required? Currently I'm using TM warthog, trackir, and pedals. I'm also running at 1440p on the highest settings.

Nothing else is required, assuming the computer is up to the task. Be aware that DCS currently does not support the touch controllers.

Download and run the Oculus Rift Compatibility Checker:

https://support.oculus.com/1633938460220125/

Note you will need some good USB 3 ports for the Rift and Sensors. For two sensors you will need three ports, two for sensors and one for headset.

Some USB 3 ports are known to cause issue with the Rift, this checker will let you know if yours are in that category. I added an Innatek USB 3.0 powered PCIe card for mine, works great. The Rift can be a little finicky with USB ports.

Yea I figured the controllers for motion would not be used. I also was curious about the IR emitters and if they were required.

My PC specs :

I7 6700k @ 4.0ghz

16gb ram

2 ssd. 1 ocz 960gb and one 256gb Samsung

Asus strix 1080Ti OC edition

Dell gsync s2716dg monitor @2560x1440

Also, how is it visually in VR? It looks great maxed out currently on my monitor.

Your computer should perform just fine. One emitter is required for using just the Rift.

Visually, it won't be quite as nice as your monitor, but the immersion level tends to trump that issue, in most people's opinion.

Yep I would say you are very good to go with that rig.

I personally would recommend going ahead and setting up the two sensors, even if you do not plan on using Touch controllers. The headset benefits and uses both sensors as well, if nothing else it can only improve the tracking.

I have mine set up in front of me facing me, one on each side of the desk app 5ft apart, angled up and in slightly.

Hmm my desk is about 76 inches in length so I could do that too. Does it come with all the sensors or just one in the box?

Also I suppose track IR would no longer be required and I would just use the mouse to click the cockpit as I do now. Hopefully it does not look blurry. I do like how it looks how on all high settings on a 1440p monitor.

Yes, one sensor with the headset and another with the touch controllers. Generally you want to have the sensors about 2m apart and pointing slightly down at you. But you will see the 'area' etc when you do the setup and adjust accordingly to suit your situation.

TrackIR no longer reqd for DCS, and yep mouse click as usual. Using the keyboard is pretty tricky in the Rift so most people utilise a voice control like Voice Attack for additional controls.

Yes it will look substantially more 'blurry' compared to what you are used to, to the point that most cockpit text and small dials are unreadable at normal distance. You need to lean right in or 'zoom' in to read them properly. Setting a high Pixel Density in DCS helps a lot, but is hard on the system - 1.5 is generally a good compromise - which is the equivalent of 4K res.

But any cons of VR such as resolution etc are easily beaten by the 'being there' experience! Not many people would go back to sim flying on a 2D screen after using VR it seems...

The Rift comes with one sensor, the Touch Controllers also come with 1 sensor, so if you get the current bundle deal they are offering on sale then yes you will have two sensors.

No need for Track IR any longer, you can retire that puppy.

Yes you use the mouse, and also in DCS you can assign a button as a left or right mouse click, even a scroll up and down if you desire in the VR menu in the UI Layer. I have a button on my Warthog throttle assigned as left mouse click, works very well. Press it in and I get a mouse crosshair, look to the switch or button I want and press again to press it.

Image - not going to be as good as you see on the 1440p monitor. Initially you may be disappointed with that. Then you climb into that cockpit, look all around you and realize rather than looking at an image of DCS World on a monitor, you are literally in DCS World, you will probably go OMG, are you freakin kidding me? I still to this day have those moments from time to time.

Most folks I have seen that take the plunge, that along with the immersion factor outweighs the step back in image clarity. However there have been a small few, that just are not happy with it. I have seen guys with 4k monitors, that can not go back to flying on monitor again. I have seen the same from folks with triple screen setups as well.

Yea I'm still uncertain about it. Part of me wants to try it and the other part wants to wait for a version 2 where graphics would be better.

I just hope everything isn't blurry. I'm very close to pulling the trigger on the Newegg bundle. Figure if I don't like it, I can sell it since it will also come with the controllers.

Just don't start with 2.1, VR performance there is shite. Stick to 1.5 for the time being.

Either way, forget about playing at highest settings. Not that it matters, you won't tell the difference with the image quality offered by current-gen VR.

Oh that sucks because I need 2.1 for right now. Wasn't even thinking about getting one until the Newegg deal showed up in my email. Need to do some more research for the time being.

I think I will go ahead and order it, this guy cracked me up so much. Also looks to me like I can see the dials and writing on the controls just fine on there:

Look at some of the threads where people were on the fence. For those that got the Rift they were blown away and couldn't believe they waited this long.

You will NOT be disappointed.

Yep agreed, no problems at all. But that is not the image seen in the Rift....., that is the image that is also displayed on your monitor while in the Rift, so whatever res you set in the options screen. Sry to disappoint.

Not many ppl capture the 'lens view' to post on YT. Here is a better representation of what you actually see.

Why does it show two screens, I get that it's suppose to be what you are seeing through both eyes but I believe once you are in it, you just see one image. Btw that text looks all clear and good.

I suppose I'll have to set dpi to 1.5-2.0 for better reading. I sit close to my monitor now anyway and my hotas is on my desk, pedals underneath the desk too so I don't think I'll have issues since will be pretty zoomed in.

Amazon also has the $399 deal with a $100 gift card. But for some reason it says it's eligible for prime shipping yet I would get the headset next week and the controllers the 25th somehow.

Or I could just go to Best buy and pick it up for the same price but that bundle comes with eve valkyre. Hmm tough choice..go during lunch today and pick it up while at work or go with the $100 amazon option and wait a while.

There's no good video that shows how it really looks. It's a bit like 720p, but further degraded by visible pixel grid and some lenses distortions.

Your seating position in reality does not really matter in VR, reset view always puts you in the same spot. Of course you can move forward/ backward from there. There's no adjustable "zoom" either, only a binocular-like feature that you can map to a joystick button.

Went ahead and ordered it on Amazon. I should have the headset by July 19 and the controllers by the 25th.

You don't need the controllers to set up the headset with the PC right?

Amazon also included a $100 gift card so assuming no screw ups this time at my apartment when it's suppose to be delivered, I got the bundle for $300 basically. Worth it at that price.

Yup very excited. Even if I don't like it I can sell it for what I got it with everything.

Now is there an optimization thread for dcs, moreso for the A-10C? I need to use the NTTR map for the time being.

Just looking to prepare for using the best settings. My system should handle it fine with the 1080ti.

Did some browsing and I see others set it to VR mode in graphics options then set dp to 1.5or 2.0.

I guess what I'm looking for is what settings can I turn down, which should be max, etc.

I'm tempted to leave it all on high and do to 1.5 first to see how it handles.

The settings will be stand alone for both 1.5.x.and 2.1.x however you may need to turn down some video attributes in 2.1.x, however 2.1.x flies pretty good even at lower settings in Rift.

Start with MSAA , AF and deferred shading off most everything is fine on high and work your way up from there.

YMMV

Control is an illusion which usually shatters at the least expected moment.

Gazelle Mini-gun version is endorphins with rotors. See above.

I'm glad I found this thread. I was researching for a new monitor and realized how much G-Sync jacked-up the price. These prices are ridiculous for a monitor. So I figured I might as well look into VR instead. I'm on the fence as well, since I use 3x 1080p monitors now but I might just take advantage of this Rift sale going on.

Currently I'm using a 27 inch Dell sd2716dg gsync monitor. I'm constantly getting over 120 fps on all high settings but I'm really curious how it will look on the rift.
