golfsierra2 Posted December 27, 2006 Posted December 27, 2006 http://forum.lockon.ru/showthread.php?t=20448 brought an article back to my attention, that I would like to discuss here: I've read that Battlefield 2142 comes with a note, that within the game scenes there will be ads provided throught the internet connection. How do you feel about live (real company) ads in an online game ? kind regards, Raven.... [sigpic]http://www.crc-mindreader.de/CRT/images/Birds2011.gif[/sigpic]
VMFA117_Poko Posted December 27, 2006 Posted December 27, 2006 Voted yes 'cause that is my proffesion to make ads. EDIT: I need to to straighten out. In game ads like in FIFA series or NBA Live or something like that where those ads should really be I am for it because this can help to summon more funds for developers. But if ads will jump on me on full screen and I will have to look at it for more than 5 seconds like in tele - hell no! I am against! I can't stand agressive advs.
ФрогФут Posted December 27, 2006 Posted December 27, 2006 Voted i don't care. Cause i really don't care. In the game i usually look only on what i need. I heard, that there was ads in NFSU after i finished playing.:) "Я ошеломлён, но думаю об этом другими словами", - некий гражданин Ноет котик, ноет кротик, Ноет в небе самолетик, Ноют клумбы и кусты - Ноют все. Поной и ты.
ALDEGA Posted December 27, 2006 Posted December 27, 2006 Given the fact that games with ads cost the same as games without ads, and given the quality and after-release-support (patches etc.) is usually extremely limited: never. We're being ripped off plenty-ful already.
yamangman Posted December 27, 2006 Posted December 27, 2006 I wouldn't give a crap if indirectly targeted ads come through my net connection in online games. If however the same technology also logged my location, ISP and other details I would never purchase it however, and this is what most game ad services do.
airea Posted December 27, 2006 Posted December 27, 2006 If games are totally free, then no problem with ads. However, I pay my hardly earned money for the software and seeing ads with paid software would be disturbing...
hitman Posted December 27, 2006 Posted December 27, 2006 Only time I will allow in-game ads would be when I leave the server. Phishing and spyware notwithstanding...I really dont want to see em nor do I want them remotely close to my machine.
EscCtrl Posted December 27, 2006 Posted December 27, 2006 Remember the film 'Die another day'? i don't recall the adverts in that making it any good - the film itself seemed to just be an advert for the whole bond franchise anyway rather then a film. I'd rather ED sourced the funds elsewhere, by making a good series of games as they already are perhaps?
warthogmadman987 Posted December 27, 2006 Posted December 27, 2006 The thing that turned me to saying never was the "Live" part of the ads. See, i dont mind that if in the game, i see an add put up there, like as if i fly by and see a bill board with BK, or KFC, but when it says live, that means those adds will be loaded onto my computer, instead of being an object in the game. I dont want that loading onto my PC. I think it would though add imersion if you could have an object and i have an advertisment on it. Like a static billboard.
zaelu Posted December 27, 2006 Posted December 27, 2006 I voted no. This is the best ad I've seen: :megalol: [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] I5 4670k, 32GB, GTX 1070, Thrustmaster TFRP, G940 Throttle extremely modded with Bodnar 0836X and Bu0836A, Warthog Joystick with F-18 grip, Oculus Rift S - Almost all is made from gifts from friends, the most expensive parts at least
Carlos73 Posted December 28, 2006 Posted December 28, 2006 Nightmare How do you feel about live (real company) ads in an online game ? Planes had advertisements painted on their wings. Land to reload weapons and refuel, wingads would change. During the refueling you would have to watch tvadvertisements from MFD. Asking taxi clearance from tower would start with a radioad. During missions, pause and commercials. Black shark video, the one where the pilot lady smokes, would be advertising the brand of the cigarette in the end. Wouldn't that be great. Hell no, I say.

All about brainwashing you to purchase something you either dont need or is inappropriate for your particular purpose. Not every ad is about brainwashing and agressive mate! Without advertising your firm is invisible. Kula66 Posted December 28, 2006 Posted December 28, 2006 Advertising is the invention of the devil! I would never buy a game with ads ... we get bombarded with enough of this rubbish already! Just my 2pennies worth :)
britgliderpilot Posted December 28, 2006 Posted December 28, 2006 SWAT 4 did it ages ago - the posters in the levels are taking images directly from the net. If it's done well, then it can work. It's a blast to wander through a SWAT level you haven't played in a year and see a poster for something that's due out soon . . . . . really adds immersion. On the minus side, it can be a pain in the arse having posters on every wall, and I don't know how immersive you can make adverts that are set 140 years in the future . . . . 1 http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v121/britgliderpilot/BS2Britgliderpilot-1.jpg

Maybe Need For Speed or GTR or ... man, You have advs in almost every game BUT not so agressive like You talking about.
Cosmonaut Posted December 28, 2006 Posted December 28, 2006 I'm sorry but this isn't even a debate. I want a Hell NO choice in the poll. How do you feel about live (real company) ads in an online game ? I would feel pretty ripped off. I pay for the game and then have to allow companies access to my PC which I have no control over so they can then upload adds to a game I play in my free time. That sounds completely ridiculous to me and that's not even mentioning where this will most likely end up..I can imagine that your movements around different levels will be uploaded so they can better tailor the adds..No way not for me!! Without advertising your firm is invisible. Even now You showing yourself, your way of thinking. Not meaning to offend Poko, and I may have been a little harsh in my previous post. So I'll edit it. I would agree they they DO have their place..... but they dont have to be every place. This marketting stuff creeps into everything. If I pay for something (eg. a hobby) I really dont want someone trying to sell me something in the middle of it. Be it subliminal or right in my face. If its a free or heavily subsidised (by advertisers) venture, all well and good. Bring on the ads. But not in something I pay full price for. No way. ....without that I even wouldn't know that there is a PaddyTB in our community. Well Heya, nice to meet you. Its what forums are all about.;) Cheers PaddyTB 1 AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Socket 939, Motherboard Abit AV8, Corsair DDR PC3200 - 4 x 512 MB ASUS AX800Pro Flashed to X800 XT, Samsung CD/DVDRW, Seagate 2 x SATA 250G RAID, Creative Soundblaster XFi Xtreme music, Trackir 3 Pro, Saitek X52 Pro, Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 32 Bit
VMFA117_Poko Posted December 28, 2006 Posted December 28, 2006 Now I agree with You! I am definitely against importunate commercial brakes in games that I have to pay for full price. Everything has limites. Unfortunately we don't know do we pay for it or not. Also none of developers will count with our verdict here... :) Nice to meet You too PaddyTB. I change quote. :)
Kula66 Posted December 28, 2006 Posted December 28, 2006 Have You ever played FIFA from EA? I am sure You have at least one game with adv. Maybe Need For Speed or GTR or ... man, You have advs in almost every game BUT not so agressive like You talking about. Poko, you are quite correct ... never played/owned one ... I see it as the thin end of the wedge. I would rather pay double for the price of a game. I guess you could fly around and blow up Macky Ds or Burger Kings dotted around the map ... But I admire your stand! :)
VMFA117_Poko Posted December 29, 2006 Posted December 29, 2006 That is a different story with Mackies :) I mean I prefer to fly Sukhoi - not Zukhoi i.e. and drive mercedes - not admiral (in GTA). Use adv when you need to. Showing this way is a kind of advertising.
Prophet Posted December 29, 2006 Posted December 29, 2006 If they were static objects like billboards, sure I dont care. Makes the city look more like a city. But I know that is not how it would be, so I say NO! Because once you let those vultures in, you will never get them to go away.
Rooks Posted December 29, 2006 Posted December 29, 2006 Only if the billboards had an "All your base are belong to us!" :D
