williehayesjr Posted November 8, 2017 Posted November 8, 2017 I often wonder, will there ever be actual verbal communication between the pilot and other radio sources. Menu commands are OK for now, but why can't we actually speak our commands and responses. I know that there is software that would allow one to do that, but can this type of communication be incorporated into the simulator itself?
Mars Exulte Posted November 9, 2017 Posted November 9, 2017 Could it be? Yes. Would it be a huge amount of trouble? Also, yes. Will it ever happen? Probably not. Stop a think for a few moments about what would be entailed. Something like this would have to support multiple languages, or even multiple accents of one language. ED are Russian, should they support Russian? Or English? Both are large parts of their customer base. Or maybe they'll have to finagle in British English? Have you ever ACTUALLY attempted to use voicecomm software of the type you're asking for? Fire up Windows text to speech, or use it on your phone. Try saying a few things, my favorite is "Crew, power on!" which invariably translates as either "Carew, tower on!" or "Flower, flower on!" williehayesjr Posted November 10, 2017 Author Posted November 10, 2017 (edited) Done before If memory serves me correct, this has been done more than 15 years ago. I can distinctly remember when certain game programs required voice training. In other words, one would speak the command into a microphone; the software program would record it and associated it with a program command, and ultimately initiate that command when ever that verbal phrase was uttered. This way, any program can be tailor to the user and with any language or dialect. Surely, the advancement of verbal computer commands has advanced since then. By the way, my phone has a 98% success when ever I verbally speak during a text message. Edited November 10, 2017 by williehayesjr
GGTharos Posted November 10, 2017 Posted November 10, 2017 I'd rather they work on making missiles work better or visuals or any other flight-specific thing, rather than trying to incorporate voice control. There are external programs that already do this well. You don't see a lot of games with voice control built in today - those that had it are a fad that has passed for the most part. As for your phone, the voice recognition is backed up by a huge NNet in the cloud. Your phone isn't doing that much AFAIK. proletariat23 Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 honestly in a flight sim game in 2017 not having it is laughable.
Kang Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 If I remember correctly Sonalysts' Dangerous Waters, a naval sim from 2005, had a fairly well-working voice command system. I agree that there might be more important things to work on now, but it's not a bad thought to have for the future.
MikeMikeJuliet Posted November 16, 2017 Posted November 16, 2017 There are more recent games with voice recognition done right. An example would be There Came An Echo, 2015, where you could actually customise your voice commands by typing them in freely. Here's a video on it by TotalBiscuit: This goes to show that speech recognition could be implemented effectively, and would give simulators a new dimension in singleplayer if implemented well. NeilWillis Posted November 16, 2017 Posted November 16, 2017 It's really a question of priorities. And there are plenty of voice activation packages that allow you to do almost anything with them in combination with DCS World. On the other hand, I don't know of many 3rd party programs to fix bugs in DCS World, or to hasten the release of 2.5. Which do you think really needs to be implemented first? Just get Voice Attack, and stop slating ED for doing what they feel is the most important things with their limited resources. They're not a huge software house with unlimited funds and manpower.
Abburo Posted November 16, 2017 Posted November 16, 2017 honestly in a flight sim game in 2017 not having it is laughable. Yes, sure! All other games have voice commands built in and only DCS is not compliant. C'mon, be serious, be realistic... learn to adapt. There are several great voice commands programs which can transform any of your games. You will pay once and have all games with voice commands... which is way better then doubling same effort by all game developers and paying extra money each time. Wake up people!
