Hi, will it be possible to start from FARPS or reload from it ?

Or even start from any location on the ground, like on a highway or parking lot ?

Posted

Yes according to jabbers start from ground option is in.

I think that the problem with the FARP that are presently in game is that it is raised off the ground a bit and might cause a problem getting off of it after refueling and rearming. Remember, you are pretty severely limited in weight for a vertical takeoff so unless this is addressed, we're going to need to really get good at AAR!

Theoretically with the spawn on ground option you can spawn Aircraft next to a road and just put a few static tents around to make it look like a Forward airfield or something of the like. Who knows, if the Harrier is capable of taking off in fields too you could theoretically make a forward airbase almost anywhere you want.

In fact you can do this with any aircraft if you change a few lines of text in a LUA file somewhere. It's even MP compatible without clients needing to download it. We did this on the Fighting Legends WWII server where we made a German airfield hidden in a forest.

The main issue was rearming and refuelling. This is limited to a certain radius on the airfields and directly on the pads at FARP's. With the WWII birds it wasn't possible to taxi up onto the FARP without a prop strike or breaking the gear. Our attempts at hiding them underground or other silly things like that didn't work either. Hopefully ED implements something like a rearm refuel radius around Fuel trucks or adds the long awaited 'grass airfield' feature that has been in the editor for a while.

Wasn't this added for the Viggen?

I have mentioned it in another comment, so will answer a little here also.

during testing I have landed, rearmed and refuelled at a FARP, and then left the FARP with a short take off.

Hi Newy, thanks for the insight. If at all possible could you clarify: Short takeoff or Vertical Takeoff? I don't think many people here are debating that you can't land on the Heli FARP's vertically. If you did rolling Landings and takeoffs, was it on grass or on the FARP area itself (the patches of elevated ground between the pads). If on the grass did you just roll up onto the FARP or how did you manage to rearm/refuel?

@Kayos, No idea I haven't got the Viggen but last time I tried it it didn't work.

Rearmed and refuelled just like a helicopter would at the FARP but I was not on the landing pads themselves, I was on the large clear area of the FARP.

hope that clears it up, and hopefully you guys wont have long to wait now.

On the subject of FARPs, it would seem like a quite easy task to make some minor changes to it to become fully suited for the Harrier.

Adding the portable metal grid texture to the currently empty area - the distance seems great for a STOL-capable aircraft runway length.

And to at least on one of the pads lower it so that the slope doesn't become a hindrance for transitioning between the pad and the runway level.

That’s actually a cool idea. Would definitely be viable if a pad was lowered. I already figured out that you can line them up one after the other to make a longer ‘runway’ but the pad was still a limiting factor.

Felt a bit let-down with how the STOL capability of the Viggen has been a bit underdeveloped (and thus underutilized), since it's still seemingly impossible to start from anywhere except an airport, and a fair hassle with the vehicles to make it work out.

Only found one server so far that even bothered to have one, and it didn't even work properly on it.

That's why I'd much rather see a quick and easy solution that uses the existing robust FARP helipads rather than to wait and see considering all of the things that are currently in the development pipeline.

No, that is just some workaround made by Heatblur, tailored to the Viggen.

Hi BIGNEWY,

I set up a new mission with the latest build of 1.58 Release version.

I put a FARP down and added a Harrier at a nearby Airbase.

I went into the Fly mission in the ME and took off from the Airbase and then vertical landed on the actual Heli-pad of the FARP

I tried to arm and refuel, (all the menu radio options were there, but I got no response from the ground crew. Is there anything else I need to do? Or does it only work in the open green area of the FARP and not the pads themselves?
