Does anyone know why there has been such a substantial increase in cost for the GTX 1080 Ti?

At the end of December the cost was around $760 u.s. and is now up to around $1,400 u.s.

Probably third party sellers to the bitcoin miners. Because of this they are in very short supply.

Yeah, I recently checked EVGA Hybrid (watercooled) 1080Ti and it was about $830 or so

I don't quite understand it either, except that it is some type of crypto currency and these so called data miners are going crazy for it. Many running several high end GPU's just to "mine" for it. Thus creating an increased demand for the video cards.

My 1080Ti makes about 8-10€/day mining altcoins ( everything BUT bitcoin ).

No wonder why. Started 24.Dec and already have +/- 165€.

That explains the hype...it is a factum

best case 10 euro per day, so 80 days to pay off the cost of the card ?

Then you have to figure in cost of PC and electricity costs per day as well ?

my cpu mines enough to pay the electricity, roughly 0,90-1,30€/day. My card uses about 160-250w, depending on algorhythm and PowerTarget/Temp setting.

My PC runs 24/7 anyway, for the past 2 decades, say 200w in average for the GPU + 50w for the CPU = 250w x 24 = 6kWh * 0,30€ = 1,80€ electricity/day

the pc was there before mining and would also be here if there was no such thing like mining, I dont need to calculate the cost for it.

Given that we germans pay the highest electricity price compared to other western nations, it is no wonder that mining is booming where elec is cheap.

but it even pays well if you pay 30€cent/kWh

yeah, the card was 929,-€, roughly 3 months and it paid itself, the cpu pays the utilities.

it's roughly 0,001 BTC/day average gain, also some ETH...its wierd, its fun, its paying to Paypal and I love it ;)

my pal just got another 1080ti solely for mining, plus a 1kWh PSU....it really pays well, still.

One of my other pals does Ant Mining BTC, he got his money,by starting years ago, he made the golden move, lucky bastard hehe ;) but this beyond what I do. I also dont have constant 14kWh 4 free as he does LOL

I'll elaborate a bit more. There are multiple crypto currencies in play right now. One way to get them is to mine for it using your graphics card to do computation. Some functions are done faster in GPU (graphics cards) than CPU.

So miners, as these cryto-currency folks are called, have caused a shortage or graphics cards. So people started selling them at a higher price....because they can as Johny/DBurne(?) stated.

But if you go to the vendors site, you'll see that it hasn't gone up *that* much.

The other factor is shortage of memory globally. But that's another factor.

It's the perfect Storm.

AMD only has one interesting card to compete with NVIDIA the VEGA 56 and they are in short supply. The custom models are nowhere to be seen. There has beem so MUCH delay from the partners, and most of that is partly due to AMD and their plan to stick with HBM2.

Therefore, everytime miner business surges NVIDIA charges whatever it wants.

Glad I bought my 1080Ti back in may.

Not NVIDIA. 3rd party sellers. It's how the market works.

...and climbing again.

I am so happy I dont have to buy a card now, this is really overly insane.

They should start making miner cards, no Screen Output, bigger fans, totally different card so to speak. Devide the market, gamers are gonna riot soonber or later, or start mining out of frustration to get some cash back...LoL and thus fuel the dragon.

I am guilty as well ;( SHAME !!!

Prices on GPU's will probably drop in a couple weeks. The price of all the crypto currencies has tanked hard, so I doubt many will be clamoring for new mining rigs for the next couple of months. It's still profitable to mine, but a lot scarier for people expanding or just starting.

And then it's back up again 2weeks later. It's very volatile. This is something the manufacturers have to take in account for their product portfolio and we have to deal with it in the meantime.
