I'm so close to buy one of these two graphic cards and been checking out some articles and comparisons (this for example: http://gpuboss.com/gpus/GeForce-GTX-980-Ti-vs-GeForce-GTX-1080-Ti) but so far without any reference to how they perform in DCS. Will I be able to run DCS 2.5 with the highest settings on 980 ti well enough? Do I really need to pay that extra money for the 1080 ti?

Please share your knowledge if you own one of the two.

My system:

Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit

i7-4790 CPU @ 3.60GHz

RAM: 16 GB

SSD: 512 GB (only windows and DCS are installed here)

HDD: 1 TB (I use it to "chache" files to help "unburdening" the SSD)

GPU Boss sucks. Use Userbenchmark. No, you probably won't be able to absolutely max 2.5 with a 980 Ti but you'll have good performance. If you don't intend to buy a VR headset, I wouldn't shell out for the 1080 Ti, at least not with today's prices.

Thanks for the reply. I'm leaning towards the 1080 ti anways. I guess, I just need someone to push me. After all, it's damn expensive!

I think depends on the price you would get a 980Ti for and whats your intentions. For normal (non VR) DCS its good enough for triple screen. I even enjoy VR in it sometimes. However, I think DCS is not ready vor VR primetime, yet and there are many issues to be resolved.

Some weeks ago I was looking at the the price for a 980Ti and it was still 600 € while a 1080Ti was "only" 200 € more for like 50 % more GPU power... However, prices are pretty crazy currently so not sure how this is at this very moment. I would also suggest to get a 1070 instead of a 980Ti (it has the same power but is most likely cheaper)

Yes, the prices! No idea why they've gone wako recently. Any time soon they might drop a bit? During easter maybe?

1070 ti would be the compromise type of thing for me. But then again, if I'd pay that amount of money to get the 1070 ti, then why not pay 100-200 euros more for the 1080 ti. And that' the dilemma I'm in :smilewink:

blame Samsung for having a monopoly on DDR ram manufacture.

they got stung by wholesalers a few years ago with low prices. and now they are getting payback by letting production dry up.

they have promised to increase production later in the year..

about the time the wholesalers they are targeting go bust :)

because no one should buy at these prices.

I just upgraded from a MSI 980TI to an ASUS ROG 1080TI.

The performance improvement was really noticeable. I only fly in VR, so I can’t keep settings on max, but I could increase several settings. Worth it? For VR, absolutely! For 2D, not so sure.

I just upgraded from 'MSI GeForce GTX 980Ti Gaming 6G Golden Edition' to 'MSI GeForce GTX 1080 Ti GAMING X TRIO'.

No doubts.

Using a 980ti myself on triple monitors. All settings maxed (MSAA only at 2x, AF at 16x), although I haven't actually played on the new Caucasus map yet, I have played on NTTR and Normandy.

Depending on activity levels and where I am, 30-60fps. If you're on a single 1440 or 1080 monitor you'll be fine. 4k, you will definitely NOT be fine.

That said, I would suggest against buying either one right now.

The 980ti is completely blown out of the water by the 1000 series, money spent on pre-1000 series cards is effectively wasted unless you're getting it for next to nothing. The 1000 series is currently grossly overpriced due to the cryptominers and rampant scamming/scalping. My recommendation is wait until the next series releases in a few months and buy one of the new cards at NOT grotesquely inflated prices.

Very helpful replies up there! Very much appreciated.

It's just when you really want something while knowing how insolent the price is and then try to get others to talk you into it to kinda justify this petulant behaviour.

I'll have to be patient. And then when the prices go down I'll get the msi GTX 1080 ti.

Cheers!

"Cryptocurrency miners buying up cards as soon as they hit shelves. "

Partially, but mostly scalpers buying the cards as soon as they hit the shelves so they can resell them for twice what they're worth, not just to miners... but specifically to stupid ones :P

Alpen, I strongly advise you to watch the market prices on GPUs right now. With the crypto prices through the floor and showing no sign of short term recovery, it won't be long before people start panic selling their mining rigs. Right now, there are dozens and dozens of 1080tis on Amazon/Ebay, they're still trying to get top dollar, but that won't last long.

As the market becomes glutted with people offloading their old equipment, and then when the NEXT gen cards launch in a few more months for half what they're currently trying to get for 1000 series cards, you'll probably be able to pick up a 1080ti for $400-600 before very much longer.

Patience, in all things. Patience is always rewarded. Impulse buying will screw you, every single time.

When I upgraded my 980Ti to a 1080Ti I did a FPS comparison in DCS 1.5 and 2.0. In DCS 2.0 you did get nealy a 100% boost in FPS.

Here is the video. Maybe it helps a bit. Comparison is for VR but should be similar for a monitor.

I've noticed that actually. Many graphic cards out there online and I was surprised to see the prices in Bitcoins as well. Never thought the cryptocurrency would make it so far. The central bank's worst nightmare! But with them been losing ground recently the central bank is all happy again. Ok, I got a bit off topic there :music_whistling:

Bless you for the video! That's exactly what I've been looking for. Direct comparison showing max. and min. performance of the two graphic cards. Surely I'll get the 1080 ti but I'll wait for the prices to drop first.

Yes. The 1060 should be similar to 980 with +-3% difference depending game and drivers.

I would actually like to know how well would 1060 in SLI work against 1070 and 1080 as that could be easy way to get cheaper performance for VR as two cards would be rendering two eyes (one eye per GPU) so it should balance things fairly well.

i7-8700k, 32GB 2666Mhz DDR4, 2x 2080S SLI 8GB, Oculus Rift S.

i7-8700k, 16GB 2666Mhz DDR4, 1080Ti 11GB, 27" 4K, 65" HDR 4K.

Not 100% sure, but I think SLI does not work for VR (yet?)

Also I wouldn't recommend SLI to anyone except he knows EXACTLY what he's doing! It is not supported by all games and is a hassle to get to work sometimes. Take the price of the second card and buy a better single card. You will be better off in 98% of all cases.

There is no SLI support in VR.

There is no SLI support for DCS. There are some tweaks you can do, but there's still problems with microstutters etc. Not worth the hassle.

I bought my 1080ti more than 8 months ago and paid 150€ less. Are these kinds of prices ever likely to drop or is this the new normal?

I'm already greatly anticipating the next generation of graphics. For VR, not even the 1080ti is enough.

PC Specs / Hardware: MSI z370 Gaming Plus Mainboard, Intel 8700k @ 5GHz, MSI Sea Hawk 2080 Ti @ 2100MHz, 32GB 3200 MHz DDR4 RAM

OS: Windows 10 Home Creator's Update

Many have reported increasing FPS in non-VR settings. So it certainly looks like SLI works in 2D-DCS.

As for the price, it's all supply and demand. Crypto miners are gobbling them all up. but I'm sure the market will self-correct. It always does.

Hey alp, I am looking to upgrade, too. Maybe just wait a few months? What is with your old card? I am thinking about buying all parts but the ram and graphics card. Ram is even worse. Most stacks went from 150 to 50 and then to 250€ again... Like it is said in the article: all other parts are cheaper atm because nobody builds new systems. Maybe invest in those parts now and keep your ram and gcard until the prices are falling? Good luck!

That's exactly the plan. Just wait. The rest is fine and my computer doesn't need anything else right now. Maybe a new monitor? Hmmm... easy on the money there :music_whistling:
