There's a problem with Mirages in the "Battle over Sukhumi unleashed" mission

Unlocking them is fine, i like how you have to put in effort to have them, however, once you unlock them, you can't use them, unless you fly a huey there. about 100nm trip

Here's why

The Mirage 2000 spawns with wheel chocks on (I don't know why, it's dumb if you ask me. It has a parking brake after all). Ground crew usually removes them, so it's barely ever a problem.

It is here, because the airfield doesn't become red when you unlock the Mirages

There is no ground crew to remove your wheel chocks

It's impossible to use Mirages, even if the unlock criteria are met

Presumably the same problem would presumably be found in other missions that have the element of unlocking better aircraft

Mirages were seen flying multiple times in the mission Battle Over Sukhumi Unleashed. The last update must've caused something.

I'll check it out and update on this.

EDIT:

Problem solved. Was a tiny issue in the triggers ;)

Is red's main AWACS (21) going offline about halfway through Battle Over Sukhumi intentional? I thought it might have been done to offset the 29's better radar when red unlocks them, but it seems to happen even when blue have their Mirages instead. It looks like he just decides to go land and then is never replaced, and as 15 doesn't communicate, it leaves red with no AWACS function while blue seem to have both.

The same thing happens sometimes in the Abu Dhabi mission to both Blue and Red. If it's not intentional*, from my limited observation it seems to occur if there happens to be a fighter taxiing to or from the runway at the same time the AWACS is taxiing; the A-50 stops behind the fighter and then doesn't move even when the taxiway is clear.

*It's not a huge deal in the Abu Dhabi mission because all the CAP, strikers, and helos end up flying in the same area downtown anyway. Good incentive to put up EWR sites and have human GCIs for the last part of the mission.

It's up to Mi-8's and UH-1's to set up EWR units.

I have a tanker for each coalition on station for the AWACS planes to refuel. Which is why they land at some point when running out of it. There was a line missing a comma in the .lua script for the tankers that caused the whole problem. A bloody comma :smilewink:

The AWACS planes should be able to refuel and stay online for the entire mission now.

I think it was in "When the mountains cry" today that there is a spawning error at FARP Zeni for the Hueys. They spawn on top of each other causing a crash.

DCS issue.

YESTERDAY IN THE TWO TOWNS MISSION THERE WHERE NO ENEMY TANKS (BLUE) NOR ARTILLERY UNITS OR M163 IN THEIR FARP. PLEASE WHEN YOU GET THE TIME CHECK IT OUT.

I've checked it out multiple times after it's been reported multiple times. No freaking idea why the units have all disappeared when they're clearly there in the mission editor. And when running the test through the ME all units are there. Freaking DCS bugs everywhere these days. I'd have to redesign the mission, I'm afraid.

EDIT:

Operation Two Towns is out of the server's rotation due to strange script behaviour causing ground units to disappear.

Server News:

- Shilkas and Vulcans can now be deployed by Mi-8's/UH-1's. 1 crate is required.

- Deploying Strelas/Avengers requires 1 crate only, not 2.

- Deploying artillery units requires 1 crate only, not 2.

- These changes were done for the last 3 missions (missions 19, 20 and 21. Check out the first post to see all missions' names)

- These changes will be added after the currently running mission "Once Upon a Time in Abu Dhabi" ends.

Hey Alpenwolf, would you consider adding some NDB's to the Persian Gulf missions?

Nav aids compatible with Red aircraft are few and far between and visual navigation is tricky when all you can see is sand.

Cheers.

I tried it out once long time ago and it didn't work so I dropped it. But it's vital actually so I will check it out again.

Trust me, mate. Ain't much better on the Red side. Was flying the Mi-8 and the Su-25 yesterday and despite we had the numbers and 3 GCI operators, only me and 1 or 2 GCI operators were on comms. I had zero cover and was constantly shot down as other Mi-8's too. And all that despite the fact of outnumbering the enemy 2:1.

The GCI operators were typing all the time and giving bearings to our MiG's. I appreciate every GCI operator on the server and salute them all for their dedication. However, I would urge them to only provide information via SRS. Or even TS if some are having any SRS issues. Typing like that wouldn't help players get on comms.

I want to say this again, because it's vital to me it's not misunderstood; GCI operators are the spine of every skirmish on any server. I'm not scolding them for typing, but only giving advice of refraining from doing so.

In my opinion, DCS is becoming more and more like a game rather than a simulator. This wave of newcomers which brought Discord onboard among other changes is taking over and makes it difficult to adapt. Not that I want to adapt to a change of a radical nature like that. I call it radical because it's anything but simulating aviation. If comms is not part of it then what is?! Not saying if had we comms then it's 100% realistic and we need no more. It will never reach that level because it's still a computed simulator at the end of the day. But with comms you go to a different level of simulation that I had the pleasure of experiencing in DCS years ago.

I mean, what can I say. Years ago DCS felt to me more like a simulator than it is now. Most players were dedicated to using TS and SRS. Incredible coordination and teamwork.

You felt it! You actually felt it!

Hello Alpenwolf

I'm afraid you're right :-(

I was connected some few days ago, and the server was looking as a dogfight server only.

Only few people was trying to make ground attack as the briefing was saying.

The mission you propose are simple and great, so the server run fine.

And so experimented pilot, that are looking for immersion ( cockpit view only ), comes and try to test there skill. Not More.

How to be better ?

Perhaps reducing the number of slots of fighters at starting ?

And more strikers and choppers at begin ?

and then increasing the number of slots of fighters if primary objectives of briefing, one by one, are done.

Or give a time limit to obtain primary objective ?

By this way, if pilot of 'country' don't care about primary objectives,

the mission will end very soon for them because of inferiority.

Some server give 'lives' to the players, if primary objectif are done, reseting the counter

for other players waiting could be a great challenge and involve player.

Sometimes i can see squadron that do great jobs

( i remember following 3 RedDevil pilot striking and try to escort them in VR, great flight i was afraid as in real ! )

Perhaps a 'Hall of Fame' of popular squadron about primary and secondary objectives

on your server could motive them to come on your server with 'strategic' approach ( SRS use give more points )

Maintain a 'Score' of blue side and red side about primary objectives and give them some 'gift' in the following mission,

It's going to be a full time job !

I hope you to continue your great job by the way

This server truly is a air quake server at times, but it is definitely not the fault of the mission designer. It is full of lonewolves flying at weed altitude with their F-5s and MiG-21s, turning and burning. Some dedicated squadrons visiting would do good, as they tend to coordinate well. Most of them have their own servers though or can't warm to the Cold War planeset. It's unfortunate, this server with its great missions and excellent, interesting setting deserves better.

The last 3 missions added to the server include many of the points mentioned above. For instance; You want to fly the MiG-29A or the M-2000C? Fine. Then go ahead and sling load a cargo from point A and take it to point B to activate these planes.

These missions run for 8-10 hours. You want them to end quickly? Stick to the objectives.

In operation Battle Over Sukhumi Unleashed, the number of the airplanes at mission's start is very limited. And quite often you see players flying their Mi-8's/UH-1's like never before.

This type of scenario for these missions (capture and hold airdromes/FARP's) is what I'm aiming at for future missions. This is what gets players to contemplate flying their helicopters from time to time and actually consider cooperating with others. And you see that happening in those 3 missions more than in the other 18.

Limiting lives is something I considered quite often but never pulled the trigger on. I need to check out the script first.

The mission I'm working on right now (almost ready) doesn't have AWACS planes for either side. Only 2 EWR units. You know, break the routine as I always say. You want a clearer picture? Deploy EWR units using your Mi-8/UH-1. Only 8 MiG-21's/F-5's and less than that for other planes are available. However, each side will have 8-10 helicopters of different types. The mission will run for 6 hours in the PG map and that's enough now for a quick teaser :smilewink:

Operation: Search & Destroy

salman lake.jpg

shahid lake.jpg

fasa town.jpg

jahrom 1.jpg

jahrom 2.jpg

jahrom 3.jpg

Situation:

RED Airbases: Shiraz International airport and a FARP
BLUE Airbases: Lar Airbase, aircraft carrier and a FARP

At mission's start each coalition holds 1 town and 1 lake around the bullseye (marked on the F-10 map). These are vital zones that each coalition seeks to hold. Therefore, T-72 and Abrams tanks are holding the areas and protected by a small number of AAA's and IR SAM's.

*** The coalition holding all 4 areas will be declared the winner ***

Red Objective:

Destroy all ground units at a zone of the aforementioned zones. Once we have units on the ground capturing the area will require some time. A message will appear on the screen to confirm that once it's done.

 * Check out the images for the parameters of the areas to capture.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MiG's and L-39's:

- Provide CAP over towns and/or lakes held by our forces.
- Provide escort for friendly strikers. Watch out for enemy AA's.
- Feel free to provide CAS but only if needed.

MiG-29A's Waypoints:
WP-1 - Salman lake (friendly at mission's start)
WP-2 - Jahrom town (hostile at mission's start)
WP-3 - Shahid lake (hostile at mission's start)
WP-4 - Fasa town (friendly at mission's start)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Su-25's and Mi-24's:

Destroy all ground units at a zone (town or lake) so that Mi-8's can deploy crates to capture it. Once we have units on the ground capturing the area will require some time. A message will appear on the screen to confirm that.

Waypoints:
WP-1 - Salman lake (friendly at mission's start)
WP-2 - Jahrom town (hostile at mission's start)
WP-3 - Shahid lake (hostile at mission's start)
WP-4 - Fasa town (friendly at mission's start)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mi-8's:

Your job is to fortify our defences at any town or lake held by friendly ground forces.
In addition, deploying ground vehicles to attack the enemy's positions with is also vital, especially for locating his tanks for friendly strikers to destroy.
Make sure you're on comms with the GCI operator (if available). Contact fighters to provide cover if possible.

Mi-8's -> Picking up crates:
Bring up your radio menu, select F10 for CTLD and then whatever type of crates you want to pick up.

*** You can only pick up one crate at a time ***

For picking up a crate, maintain hover over it for 5 seconds while keeping an altitude of at least 7.5 meters and a maximum altitude of 15 meters.

To unpack a crate, make sure you're at least 3 km away from the FARP you started at.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Combined Arms:

The 2 cmdr slots are for players controlling ground units while being on SRS with each other and other players to coordinate their attacks.
You MUST be on SRS as a cmdr operator!
You can use the JTAC slot to drive a ground unit. However, that requires you being on comms with cmdr operators to avoid confusion and/or causing problems to their attacks.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*** Anti-Ship Tasking ***

Enemy ships are marked on the F10 map. Feel free to search and destroy all ships. However, the main target is the Super Carrier, Theodore Roosevelt.

Server News:

- The new mission Search & Destroy will replace the mission Ossetia.

- I ran some tests on the Two Towns mission and it seems to be bugged. I redesign of the mission is probably the only way so don't expect that in the near future.

Info:

As you might know, in the PG map the MiG-21 has 18 RSBN channels only. There is a mod that adds more RSBN channels to the rest of airbases while preserving the given channels. You don't have to do it to be able to join the Cold War server or any server, it's just an advice as I happen to use it. Very useful and it doesn't affect your game's compatibility with multiplayer servers.

Thanks Bud, I’m the founder of the DEVILS and the reason for it was exactly that, to have a more dynamic battleground.

Our latest thing is to only focus on the Hilo’s and support them in any way we can.

CAP/CAS.. you name it. Prepping the road for them, so that the objectives can be achieved safer and at a faster pace.

Our 2 main fixed wing vehicles are the SU25A and the Harrier. Both are excellent support aircraft.

The Harrier is not a first choice dogfighter, but it can defend itself long enough for reinforcements to arrive.

Eh, there's something to be said for air superiority. All it takes is a few people being coordinated by a good GCI - sometimes locking the other team up so badly in their own base that they can't really get any ground objectives done, as they're too busy trying to defend themselves. The newer missions are a good example too - I mostly fly fighters, so I set myself up screening the boats on Battle Over Sukhumi and try to catch any Viggens before they can do too much damage.

Some days it's all fighters, some days there's not much to kill if you're in one yourself because everyone's in helicopters down in the weeds. The reason this server is my favourite is because it doesn't really force one or the other - it doesn't result in genuine airquake (seriously, go to GS and you'll see what the real meaning of that word is) but it also doesn't discourage people from getting into fighters and having some good tussles. There's fun to be had here for every kind of pilot.
